문학은 필요하다
노벨문학상 단상
노랫말로 노벨문학상을 받을 수 있다고 생각한다. 아주 극소수의 노랫말은 시적인 영역까지도 올라간다. 한국에서는 이소라의 노랫말이 그렇고, 밥 딜런도 마찬가지라고 생각한다. 대학 시절 들었던 문화비평 수업에서 밥 딜런의 노랫말을 네 시간에 걸쳐 분석했던 기억이 난다.

받을 수도 있는 것과 실제로 받는 것 사이에는 정말로 큰 차이가 있다. 밥 딜런이 노벨문학상을 받을 자격이 있다고 하더라도 정말로 밥 딜런에게 노벨문학상을 준 것은 '충격'적인 일이다. 밥 딜런이 노벨문학상을 받았다고 해서 그가 쓴 (몇 안 되는) 책을 찾아 읽지는 않을 것이다. 출판사들은 밥 딜런의 노랫말을 시집처럼 한 권의 책으로 묶어 낼 테지만, 그렇다고 해서 그 책이 시집이 될 수는 없다.
Yes, Mr. Dylan is a brilliant lyricist. Yes, he has written a book of prose poetry and an autobiography. Yes, it is possible to analyze his lyrics as poetry. But Mr. Dylan’s writing is inseparable from his music. He is great because he is a great musician, and when the Nobel committee gives the literature prize to a musician, it misses the opportunity to honor a writer.
As reading declines around the world, literary prizes are more important than ever. A big prize means a jump in sales and readership even for a well-known writer. But more than that, awarding the Nobel to a novelist or a poet is a way of affirming that fiction and poetry still matter, that they are crucial human endeavors worthy of international recognition.
Bob Dylan does not need a Nobel Prize in Literature, but literature needs a Nobel Prize. This year, it won’t get one.

노벨위원회는 밥 딜런을 문학상 수상자로 결정하면서 전 세계를 깜짝 놀라게 했다. 부르주아들의 축제라고 비판받던 노벨상이 히피들의 문화를 끌어안았다. 노벨문학상 수상자에 대한 주요 매체들의 고상한 비평 기사 대신 트위터와 페이스북에서 온갖 반응이 쏟아진다. 외연 확대가 목표였다면 이번 노벨문학상은 성공적인 행사로 남을 것이다. 수많은 잡음을 만들어서 노벨문학상 따위에 관심 없던 사람들까지도 트위터에 한 마디씩 하게 만들었다.
그러나 동시에 노벨문학상을 진짜 작가들에게 주었다면 가능했을 많은 것들이 사라졌다. 아도니스에게 주었다면 시리아 문제에 대한 국제 사회의 관심을 다시 한번 촉구할 수 있었을 것이다. 응구기 와 티옹오에게 주었다면 변방의 문학에 대한 관심을 불러일으켰을 것이다. 문학의 영역을 확장하는 것이 목적이었다면 앤 카슨이나 제니퍼 에간 같은 이름이 떠오른다. 하다 못해 무라카미 하루키에게 주었다면 전 세계에 하루키 열풍이 불어서 출판계 살림살이라도 좀 나아졌을 것이다.
상이 무슨 대수냐고들 하지만 노벨문학상은 정말 중요하다.
