영어는 우리말과는 다른 언어이다. 문법도 어휘도 표현방식도 모두 다르다.
그래서 영어가 사용하는 구문들을 기억해야 한다. '그가 이곳에 이사온지 3년 됐다.'
라는 우리말을 영어로 옮기면 어떻게 될까? 단순해 보이는 문장이지만
'It is ~ since ~'의 문형을 모르면 번역이 쉽지 않다. 한다고 해도 어색한 문장이
될 가능성이 높다. 영어의 문형을 기억해야 하는 이유이다. 이 문형을 이용해
영어 문장을 만들면 'It is three years since he moved here.'가 된다.
다음의 표현들은 모두 우리말에 대한 이해로는 표현하기 어려운 영어의 상투적 문형들
이다. 꼭 반복 연습을 통해 마음에 넣어두기 바란다.
4. 부정표현을 이용한 주요 구문
1) without
a) It goes without saying that health is above wealth.
= It is needless to say that health is above wealth.
= Needless to say, health is above wealth.
건강이 부보다 중요하다는 것은 말할 나위도 없다.
b) He left without so much as saying goodbye.
그는 작별의 인사조차 없이 떠났다.
2) nothing / none
a) She did nothing but cry.
그녀는 울기만 했다.
b) There is nothing for it but to go by bus.
거기에는 버스로 갈 수밖에 없다.
c) Nothing is farther from my intention than to hurt your feeling.
당신의 감정을 해칠 의도는 결코 없다.
d) Nothing is more urgent than to solve this problem.
이 문제를 해결하는 것보다 더 시급한 것은 없다.
e) This program leaves nothing to be desired.
이 계획은 완벽하다.
f) When it comes to durability, this machine is second to none.
내구성에 있어서, 이 기계를 당할 만한 것은 없다.
g) He yielded to none in making excuses.
핑계를 꾸미는 데에는 그를 당할 자가 없었다.
3) no
a) There is no denying that we are still in danger.
우리가 아직도 위험에 처해있다는 사실은 부정할 수 없다.
b) It is no use crying over spilt milk.
= It is of no use to cry over spilt milk.
= No good crying over spilt milk.
쏟아진 우유를 놓고 울어봐야 소용없다.
c) There is [I have] no doubt that these firms will be merged.
이 기업들이 합병할 것이라는 점은 의심의 여지가 없다.
d) It is no [little, small] wonder that he experiences difficulties.
그가 어려움을 겪는 것은 놀랄 일도 아니다.
e) A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
고래가 물고기가 아닌 것은 말이 물고기가 아닌 것과 마찬가지다.
f) We cannot pay too high a price to obtain liberty.
자유를 얻기 위해서는 어떠한 대가를 치러도 지나치지 않다.
g) You have no choice but to marry her.
너는 그녀와 결혼하지 않을 수 없다.
h) We should waste [lose] no time in reshaping our industrial structure.
우리는 당장 우리의 산업구조를 재구성하여야 한다.
i) No sooner had he seen me than he ran away.
= Hardly [Scarcely] had he seen me when [before] he ran away.
= As soon as [The moment] he saw me, he ran away.
그는 날 보자마자 달아났다.
j) no more than = only not more than = at most
no less than = as much [many] as not less than = at least
* <no＋비교급(＋than)>은 <as＋반의어의 원급(＋as)>로 고치면 이해가 쉽다.
He is no better than yesterday. = He is as bad as yesterday.
그의 상태는 어제와 마찬가지로 좋지 않다.
He has no less than 50 books. = He has as many as 50 books.
그는 무려 50권이나 되는 책을 가지고 있다.
This book is no less interesting than that.
= This book is as much interesting as that.
이 책은 그 책에 못지않게 재미있다.
