영어의 문장 접속사 (3)
조건의 접속사 : 가정법
영어의 '법'은 영어로 'Mood'이다. 글의 분위기라는 이야기이다. 가정법은 직설적으로 표현하지 않고 가정이나 겸손의 분위기를 글에 가미한다.
1) 가정법의 유형
a) 가정법 과거: 현재 사실의 반대
If I were rich, I could buy that car.
내가 부자라면 그 차를 살 수 있을 텐데.
He would tell you if he knew.
만일 그가 알고 있다면, 그는 네게 말할 것이다.
b) 가정법 과거완료: 과거 사실의 반대
If I had not been there, you might have been drowned.
만일 내가 그곳에 없었더라면 너는 익사했을지도 모른다.
If he had followed my advice, he would not have failed.
그가 내 충고에 따랐었더라면 그는 실패하지 않았을 것이다.
c) 가정법 미래: 현재나 미래의 불확실한 사실
If you should meet him, please give him this letter.
혹시 그를 만나면 이 편지를 그에게 전해 주시오.
If a fire should break out, what should [shall] we do?
만일 화재가 일어난다면 우리는 어떻게 할까?
If you would succeed, you would have to do your best.
만일 당신이 성공하려 한다면 최선을 다해야 할 것이다.
If I were to die tomorrow, I should never forget your name.
만일 내가 내일 죽는다 해도 결코 너의 이름을 잊지 않을 것이다.
d) 가정법 혼합 시제
혼합 시제는 주로 가정법 과거완료와 가정법 과거가 한 문장에 동시에 쓰이는 경우를 가리킨다. 이때 가정법 과거의 문장에는 현재를 나타내는 부사가 함께 쓰인다.
*If he had bought the land, he would be rich now.
그가 그 땅을 샀었더라면 지금쯤은 부자가 되어 있을 텐데.
2) if의 생략
a) If he were guilty, he would be punished.
=Were he guilty, he would be punished.
만일 그가 유죄라면 처벌받을 것이다.
b) If he arrived later than expected, he might be scolded.
Did he arrive later than expected, he might be scolded.
만일 그가 기대했던 것보다 늦게 도착한다면 그는 꾸지람을 들을 것이다.
c) If I had left the house a little earlier, I might have been killed.
= Had I left the house a little earlier, I might have been killed.
내가 조금 더 일찍 집을 떠났었더라면 나는 죽었을지도 모른다.
3) 조건절이 주절에 포함된 가정법
a) A true friend would behave differently. <주어>
=If he were a true friend, he would behave differently.
진정한 친구라면 달리 행동할 텐데.
b) I would employ such an able man. <목적어>
= I would employ him if he were such an able man.
그렇게 능력 있는 사람이라면 고용할 텐데.
c) To hear him talk, you would take him for a fool. <to 부정사>
=If you heard him talk, you would take him for a fool.
그가 하는 말을 들으면 너는 그를 바보로 생각할 것이다.
d) With good luck, I might succeed. <전치사구>
=If I were lucky, I might succeed.
내게 행운이 있다면 성공할지도 모른다.
4) but for / without (…이 없다면, …이 없었다면)
a) But for [Without] the sun, nothing could live on the earth.
=If it were not for the sun, nothing could live on the earth.
=Were it not for the sun, nothing could live on the earth.
태양이 없다면 지구 상에는 어떤 것도 살 수 없을 것이다.
b) But for [Without] your help, I could not have done it on time.
=If it had not been for your help, I could not have done it…
=Had it not been for your help, I could not have done it…
당신의 도움이 없었더라면 나는 그것을 할 수 없었을 거예요.
5) 기타의 가정법 구문들
a)I wiish that she were alive now.
=O that she were alive now.
=If only she were alive now!
=I am sorry that she is not alive now.
그녀가 살아있다면!
cf. I wish she had been alive.
= I am sorry that she was not alive.
I wished she were alive.
=I was sorry that she was not alive.
I wished she had been alive.
=I was sorry that she had not been alive.
b) He acts as if he were a millionaire.
그는 마치 백만장자인 듯 행동한다.
cf. He acts as if he had been a millionaire.
He acted as if he were a millionaire.
He acted as if he had been a millionaire.
c) It is (high) time she were [was] going.
=It is (high) time for her to go.
이제 그녀가 갈 시간이다.
d) I would help you but that I am short of money.
돈이 모자라지 않으면 널 도와주겠다.
He will come unless he hears to the contrary.
오지 말라는 통지가 없으면 그는 올 것이다.
e) He is, as it were, a miser.
그는, 말하자면, 수전노이다.
f) I would rather die than disgrace myself.
치욕을 당하느니 차라리 죽겠다.
g) What if you should fail!
=What would happen if you should fail!
네가 실패하면 어쩌지! (큰 일이라는 뜻)
What if I fail! does it matter if I fail?
실패하면 어떠냐! (문제가 아니라는 뜻)
6) if 대용어
a) Suppose [Supposing] we are late, what will he say?
우리가 늦으면 그가 뭐라고 할까?
b) I will come providing [provided] it is fine tomorrow.
내일 날씨가 좋으면 가겠다.
c) In case I am late, don’t wait to start dinner.
내가 늦으면 기다리지 말고 저녁을 들어라.
d) I will undertake it on condition that you help me.
네가 날 도와준다면 그 일을 맡겠다.
e) We can do it so long as we have time.
시간만 있으면 우리는 그것을 할 수 있다.
