두 개의 명사에 대해 형용사나 부사로 그 성질이나 정도․양 따위를 대비시키는 것을 '비교'(comparison)라 한다. 비교에는 동등비교, 우월비교, 열등비교, 최상급 등으로 나눌 수 있다.
1. 동등비교(원급의 비교)
1) 동등비교의 기본적 유형: … as … as
a) The portrait is as large as life. <형용사>
그 초상화는 실물과 같은 크기이다.
b) My dog runs as fast as yours. <부사>
내 개는 당신 개만큼 빨리 달린다.
c) She is as bright as fair. <동일물에 대한 두 개의 형용사 비교>
그녀는 아름다운 것만큼 총명하기도 하다.
d) He was as deaf as deaf. <강조적>
그는 귀가 전혀 들리지 않았다.
She lay as still as still. 그녀는 꼼짝도 않고 누워 있었다.

2) 동등비교를 통한 최상급의 표현
a) He worked as hard as he could.
그는 최대한 열심히 일했다.
b) She is as happy as can be. 그녀는 더할 나위 없이 행복하다.
c) Get up as early as possible. 가능한 일찍 일어나시오.
d) He can run as fast as any other boy.
그는 다른 어떤 소년 못지 않게 빨리 달릴 수 있다.
The Koreans are as peace-loving a nation as any in the world.
한국인은 세계 어느 민족보다도 평화를 사랑한다.
e) He is as great a scholar as ever lived.
그는 이제껏 살아온 어느 누구 못지 않은 위대한 학자이다.
3) 동등비교의 부정
a) Fortune is not so blind as men are.
행운의 여신은 인간만큼 맹목적이지 않다.
b) She wasn’t quite so clever as I expected.
그녀는 내가 기대했던 만큼 그렇게 명석하지는 않았다.
c) Nothing is so precious as time. <원급 부정 ⇒ 최상급>
시간만큼 귀중한 것은 없다.
There is no love so generous as parental love.
부모의 사랑만큼 관대한 사랑은 없다.
4) 동등비교를 이용한 배수표시
a) Japan is one-twentieth as large as China.
=Japan is one-twentieth the size of China.
일본은 중국의 1/12 크기이다.
b) It would cost twice as much as that.
=It would cost as much again as that.
그것보다 돈이 배가 들 것이다.
c) He reads twice as fast as an ordinary reader.
그는 일반인보다 두 배는 빨리 읽는다.
d) He is not half so wise as his brother.
그는 동생의 절반만큼도 현명하지 못하다.
e) This hotel has two-thirds as many rooms as that one.
이 호텔은 객실 수가 저 호텔의 2/3이다.
He had three times as much money as I.
그는 나보다 세 배는 돈이 많았다.
f) Make it four times as long as this. it four times length of this.
이것의 네 배 길이로 해라.
