그가 사는 숲 속에는 아무도 찾아오지 않았다. 그녀가 떠난 지금 그의 오두막에는 그만이 있었고 사방은 깊은 침묵 속에 빠져있었다. 그는 밖으로 나와 하늘을 바라보았다. 작은 새 한 마리가 그의 등장에 놀라 서둘러 날아가 버리고 더 이상 보이지 않게 되었다. 그는 그녀의 모습을 떠올렸다. 그녀는 청초한 한 송이 수선화 같았다. 그녀의 아름다움은 말로는 형용할 수 없을 만큼 성스럽고 순수한 것이었다. 그의 오두막에는 아무런 가구도 없었지만 아직도 그녀가 남겨놓은 향기가 그득했다. 매일 그는 그녀가 돌아오기를 기도했다. 더 이상 그녀 없는 세상을 견디기 힘들었다. 그는 다시 그녀를 찾아 나서기로 마음을 먹었다. 하지만 자신이 그녀에 대해 아무것도 알지 못한다는 사실을 깨달았다. 그녀는 어디에 있을까? 그녀에게 좋지 않을 일이 일어난 것은 아닐까? 그는 불안감으로 미쳐버릴 것 같았다. 그리고 그날 밤 그녀의 꿈을 꾸었다. 그리고 더 이상 그녀를 볼 수 없을지도 모른다는 예감이 들었다. 그녀를 찾아내어 함께 하는 것보다 더 절실한 일은 없었다.

1. 명사의 부정

(1) no, little, few
-에너지가 없으면 음악도 없고, 영화도 없고, 즐거움도 없다.
-세계경제가 조속히 회복될 조짐을 보이지 않는다.
-건강이 부보다 중요하다는 사실은 누구도 부정할 수 없다.
-그가 회복될 가능성은 거의 없다.
-이곳을 들르는 관광객은 거의 없다.
[번역]
-No energy means no music, no film and no fun.
= Without energy, there is no music, no film and no fun.
-World economy shows no sign of early recovery.

(2) nothing, none, nobody, little, few

-집을 몇 군데 봤지만 하나도 진짜 마음에 들지는 않았다.
-그들은 아무도 엿들을 수 없는 작은 방에 숨어있었다.
-그녀의 과거에 대해서는 이야기된 것이 거의 없었다.
-이 결론에 반대하는 사람은 거의 없을 것이다.

(3) 전치사에 의한 부정 (beyond, above, out of, against)
-그는 남을 속일 사람이 아니다.

-그의 소설은 비평할 가치조차 없다.
-의사가 내게 담배 피우지 말라고 충고했다.

(4) 동사에 의한 부정 (resist, surpass, defy)
-우리가 직면하고 있는 문제들은 쉽게 해결되지 않는다.
-그는 병에 걸리지 않는 체질이다.
-그녀의 고귀한 희생은 필설로 다할 수 없다.
-과학자들은 아직 해결책을 찾지 못하고 있다.
-조사를 해보아도 붕괴의 원인은 찾을 수 없다.

-The problems facing us defy easy solution.
-He has a constitution that resists disease.
-Her noble sacrifice surpasses description.
-The solution eludes scientists.

2. 의미상의 부정
(1) be + 형용사 + 전치사
-이 방에는 가구가 없다.
-그 산에는 나무가 없다.
-그녀는 자식이 없다.
-이 책은 흥미롭지 못하다.
-그녀에게서 이전의 아름다움을 찾을 수 없었다.
-이 길에는 장애물이 없다.
-그들은 부끄러움을 모른다.
-그 가수는 악플 따위에는 관심을 두지 않는다.
-이런 종류의 일은 전혀 모른다.

-This room is empty [destitute] of furniture.
-The mountain is bare of trees.
-She is barren of children.
-This book is devoid of interest.
-I found her divested of* her former beauty.

(2) be [remain] + 명사
-누가 살인자인지 아직 모른다.

-정직한 의도는 조금도 없다.
-사하라 사막에서는 비가 거의 내리지 않는다.

-Who is the murderer remains a mystery.
-I am a complete [utter] stranger here.
-He is a stranger to poverty. = He doesn't know what it is to be poor*.
-There is an utter absence of honest intentions.
-Rain in the Sahara Desert is a rarity.
* what it is to-부정사: ~하는 것이 어떤 것인지
You don't know what it is to fall in love with someone.

(3) 부정적 동사
-그 이상은 나도 모른다.
-나는 독일어를 조금밖에 모른다.
-그는 자신의 아이디어를 실행할 능력이 없다.
-이 기계 덕에 많은 수고를 하지 않아도 될 것이다.

(4) 관용적 표현
-어찌할 바를 모르겠다.
-그 문제는 아직 해결되지 않고 있다.
-누구의 책임인지 아무도 모른다.

-The problem has yet to be solved. = The problem is yet to be solved
= The problem remains to be solved.
-It is anybody's guess who is to blame. = Nobody knows who is responsible.
3. 이중 부정
(1) 전치사, 접속사, 유사 관계대명사 but
-남은 것은 나뿐이었다. (나 외에는 누구도 남아있지 않았다.)
-죽을 수밖에 없다. (죽는 것 외에는 무엇도 남아있지 않다.)
-제아무리 바빠도 신문은 읽을 수 있는 법이다. (신문을 읽지 못할 만큼 바쁜 사람은 없다.)
-누구에게나 결함은 있다. (결함 없는 사람은 없다.)
[번역]
-There was no one left but me. (전치사: ~을 제외하고)
-Nothing remains but to die. (전치사)
-No man is so busy but he can read newspaper. (접속사: ~하지 않는)
-There is no one but has his shortcomings. (유사 관계대명사: ~하지 않는)
* never ~ but ~와 never ~ without ~ing: ~할 때마다 ~하다
I never talk with her but I get angry.
= I never talk with you without getting angry.
(너와 얘기를 할 때마다 나는 화가 난다.)
(2) 이중 부정의 표현들
-이것이 표절이 아니고 무엇인가? (수사 의문문 + but)
-기적만이 그를 구할 수 있었을 것이다. (nothing short of = only)
-그 모든 돈은 슬픔과 불행만을 가져다주었다. (nothing but = only)
-이것은 내가 생각하는 것과 다르다. (other than: ~와 다른)
-많은 사람들이 그의 견해에 반대했다. (Not a few = many)

-What is this but plagiarism?
-Nothing short of a miracle could have saved her.
-All that money brought nothing but sadness and misery.
-This is quite other than what I think.

4. 부정표현을 이용한 주요 구문
(1) ~할 나위도 없다 (It goes without saying~)
(2) ~조차 없이 (without so much as ~ing)
(3) ~하기만 하다 (do nothing but 동사)
(4) ~할 수밖에 없다 (There is nothing for it but to 동사)
(5) ~이 최고다 (be second [next, inferior] to 명사)
(6) ~할 수 없다 (There is no ~ing)
(7) ~해봐야 소용없다 (It is no use ~ing)
(8) ~은 의심의 여지가 없다 (There is no doubt~)
(9) A가 B가 아닌 것은 C가 D가 아닌 것과 마찬가지이다 (A is no more B than C is D)
(10) 아무리 ~해도 지나치지 않다 (cannot~ too~)
(11) 즉시 ~하다 (waste [lose] no time ~ing)
(12) A라기보다는 B다 (not so much A as B)
(13) A가 아니라 B다 (not A but B)
(14) ~하다는 것이 아니라 ~하다는 것이다 (Not that ~ but that ~)
(15) A뿐 아니라 B도 (not only A but also B)
(16) ~은 말할 것도 없이 (not to speak of = not to mention = let alone more
(17) ~하지 않을 수 없다 (cannot but 동사 = cannot help ~ing)
-건강이 가장 중요하다는 것은 말할 나위도 없다.
