The Ever-Changing, Never-Changing God
민수기 22장 22절: 그러나 하나님께서는 그가 가는 것에 대해 진노하셨습니다. 그래서 여호와의 천사가 그를 대적하기 위해 길 가운데 섰습니다. 발람은 나귀를 타고 있었고 그의 두 종들이 그와 함께 있었습니다.
하나님을 묘사하는 단어를 떠올릴 때, 어떤 것이 생각나시나요? 저에게는 몇 가지 키워드가 있습니다. 그중 하나는 '변태(變態)'입니다. 불경스럽게 들릴 수도 있지만, 여기서 말하는 '변태'는 변화할 변(變)과 모양 태(態)의 조합으로, 변화무쌍함, 멈추지 않음, 예측을 뛰어넘는 속성을 의미합니다. 하나님은 많은 경우 우리의 예상과 상식을 초월하는 방식으로 역사하십니다.
발락이 보낸 자들과 함께 길을 떠나라는 하나님의 말씀을 들은 발람은 다음 날 길을 나섭니다. 그런데 갑자기 하나님께서 진노하시고, 여호와의 천사가 발람을 막아서십니다. 전날 밤, 하나님께서는 분명 "이 사람들이 너를 부르러 왔다면 그들과 함께 가거라"라고 허락하셨습니다. 하지만 이제는 천사를 보내 길을 가로막으시고, 심지어 나귀의 입을 열어 말씀하시기까지 합니다. 하나님의 이 예측 불가능한 전개는 우리를 당황스럽게 합니다. 축복을 내리셨다가 진노하시고, 치셨다가 품으시고, 우리를 혼란에 빠지게 만드십니다.
그런데 이와 동시에 저에게는 하나님을 떠올릴 때 가장 많이 연상되는 키워드가 하나 더 있습니다. 바로 '불변성(不變性)'입니다. 이 단어는 앞서 말한 변화무쌍함과 모순되는 개념입니다. 어떻게 한 분이 늘 변화하면서도 동시에 늘 변함없을 수 있을까요?
요한계시록에서 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. "나는 알파와 오메가요, 처음과 나중이요, 시작과 끝이라." 하나님은 시작과 끝을 함께 품고 계시며, 알파와 오메가가 동시에 존재하시며 시작과 끝으로 공존하십니다. 우리의 이해를 초월하는 이 모순 속에서도, 하나님은 하나님의 방식으로 질서를 이루시며 우리와 함께하십니다. 하나님의 늘 변하시지만 불변하시는 분이신 것입니다.
하나님을 온전히 이해하는 것은 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 단편적인 사건이나 현상에 마음을 빼앗기면, 하나님에 대한 신뢰가 흔들리기도 합니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님을 조각조각밖에 알 수 없다면, 오히려 그것이 더 자연스러운 일 아닐까요? 유한한 인간이 무한한 존재를 온전히 담을 수는 없기 때문입니다.
이때 공동체의 역할이 중요해집니다. 각자가 받은 하나님의 개시를 함께 나누며, 퍼즐을 맞추듯 하나님의 모습을 더 깊이 알아갈 수 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다. 공동체 안에서 하나님의 변화무쌍한 역사와 불변하는 사랑을 함께 경험하며, 그분의 진리를 더욱 풍성하게 누릴 수 있습니다.
오늘도 하나님의 크심을 봅니다. 이해하기 힘든 방식으로 역사하시더라도, 그것이 주님의 일이기에 믿고 의지합니다. 주님의 선하심을 신뢰하며, 그분의 뜻을 따라 살아가길 소망합니다. 하나님을 향한 호기심과 친밀해지고자 하는 마음을 주님께서 아시고 채워주시기를 기도합니다. 알수록 더 알고 싶어지는 하나님, 감사합니다. 주님을 찬양하며, 주님의 생명을 따릅니다. 아멘.
Numbers 22:22 (NIV): "But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him."
When you think of words that describe God, what comes to mind? For me, a few key words stand out. One of them is "metamorphosis." That might sound strange, maybe even irreverent, but I don’t mean it in the usual way. The word metamorphosis comes from Greek roots meaning "to change form, " evoking both constant transformation and a nature beyond human expectation. God often works in ways that defy logic, unfolding His plans in ways we could never predict.
Balaam sets out on his journey after receiving God’s instruction to go with Balak’s messengers. Yet suddenly, God becomes angry, and the angel of the Lord blocks his path. The night before, God had explicitly said, "If these men have come to summon you, go with them." But now, He sends an angel to obstruct him and even opens the donkey’s mouth to speak. This unpredictable turn of events can leave us bewildered. God blesses, then appears to be angry. He disciplines, then embraces. At times, He seems to lead us into confusion.
At the same time, another word comes to mind when I think of God is "immutability." This might seem contradictory to the idea of metamorphosis. How can one be ever-changing and yet unchanging at the same time?
In Revelation, God declares, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." He encompasses both the beginning and the end, existing as Alpha and Omega simultaneously, holding all of time within Himself. Even within what appears to be paradox, God maintains perfect order and remains with us. He is always transforming, yet forever unchanging.
Understanding God fully is no simple task. When we focus on isolated events or circumstances, our faith may waver. But if our knowledge of God is always incomplete, doesn’t that make perfect sense? As finite beings, we can never fully grasp the infinite.
This is where church becomes essential. By sharing the revelations each of us receives, we piece together a greater understanding of God like assembling a puzzle. We are not alone. Within church, we experience both God’s ever-changing work and His unchanging love. Together, we come to know His truth more deeply.
Today, I see the greatness of God. Even when He moves in ways that are difficult to comprehend, I trust Him because it is His work. I place my faith in His goodness and seek to walk according to His will. I pray that God will nurture in me a deeper curiosity and a desire for intimacy with Him. The more I know Him, the more I long to know Him. Thank You, Lord. I praise You and follow the life You have given. Amen.
