민수기 26장 56절 : 차지할 땅은, 사람 수가 많은 지파든 적은 지파든, 반드시 제비를 뽑아서 나누어야 한다.
이스라엘은 제비를 뽑고 있습니다. 얼마만큼의 땅을 차지하게 될지는 오직 이 제비뽑기에 달려 있습니다. 인간의 계산도, 이성적인 판단도 개입할 여지가 없습니다. 우연히 손에 쥔 제비가 운명을 결정합니다.
만약 인생이 이처럼 우연에 의해 흘러간다면, 노력은 무의미해 보입니다. 허망함이 스며듭니다. 우연이라는 거대한 흐름 앞에서 무기력해집니다.
하지만 여기서 한 가지 중요한 사실을 놓쳐서는 안 됩니다. 이스라엘은 제비를 뽑기 전, 먼저 인구를 계수했다는 사실입니다. 이는 단순히 사람수를 세는 일이 아니었습니다. 그들은 하나님 앞에서 자신을 세우는 과정을 거친 것입니다. 인구조사는 "하나님, 제가 여기 있습니다."라는 이스라엘의 고백이었고, 하나님 앞에서 자신의 정체성을 확인하는 과정이었습니다. 즉, 스스로가 하나님 나라의 백성임을 선언하는 행위였던 것입니다.
제비뽑기라는 '우연적 사건'이 일어나기 전에, 이스라엘은 하나님과의 관계 속에서 자기 자리를 먼저 확인했습니다. 그렇다면 이 제비뽑기는 정말 무작위적인 것일까요? 아니면, 이스라엘이 하나님 앞에서 자신의 위치를 바로 세운 결과로서 나타난 섭리일까요?
우리가 흔히 운명이라고 부르는 우연처럼 보이는 선택과 사건들은 사실 그 이전의 태도와 결단에 의해 준비될 수 있다고 생각합니다. 제비를 뽑는 순간이 중요해 보이지만, 그보다 더 본질적인 것은 제비를 뽑기 전의 과정입니다. 이스라엘이 먼저 인구를 계수한 것처럼, 우리 역시 삶 속에서 먼저 하나님 앞에 나아가야 하는 것입니다.
이스라엘은 이미 선택받은 민족이었습니다. 그러나 하나님의 선택이 곧 모든 결과를 자동적으로 보장하는 것은 아니었습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘이 자신을 드러내고 응답하기를 원하셨습니다. 선택은 관계의 시작이지, 결말이 아닙니다. 이스라엘이 하나님의 초대에 응답할 때, 하나님의 축복은 제비라는 우연의 옷을 입고 나타났습니다.
우연은 우연으로 끝나지 않습니다. 하나님 앞에 선 사람에게 우연은 필연이 되고, 섭리가 됩니다. 그러므로 우리는 우연을 탓하거나 운명을 원망하는 대신, 그 앞에서 우리가 서 있어야 할 자리로 먼저 나아가야 합니다. 제비를 뽑기 전에 하나님 앞에 서는 것, 주님 제가 여기 있습니다 하고 고백하는 것, 그것이야말로 인생에서 가장 중요한 준비일 것입니다.
지나치는 우연속에서 하나님의 뜻을 알아채는 하루가 되기를 바랍니다.
Numbers 26:56 : “The land is to be distributed by lot; they will receive their inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes.”
The Israelites were casting lots, and the size of the land each tribe would receive depended entirely on that draw. No strategy, no logic, just a seemingly random act deciding their fate.
If life worked like that, it’d be easy to feel like nothing we do really matters. Like no amount of effort or planning can change the fact that we're just at the mercy of random chance. It’s a pretty unsettling thought.
But here’s the thing: before they cast lots, the Israelites did something important. They took a census. And this wasn’t just about counting people. It was a way of presenting themselves before God, a way of saying, “Lord, here I am.” It was their way of recognizing their identity as God’s people. In other words, before stepping into the unknown, they first grounded themselves in who they were and, more importantly, whose they were.
That makes me wonder that was the lot really random? Or was it actually part of God’s plan, a reflection of how they had chosen to stand before Him?
I think what we often call “luck” or “fate” isn’t as random as it seems. The moments that feel like pure chance are often shaped by the decisions we’ve already made, the choices about how we’ve prepared our hearts, the way we’ve positioned ourselves before God. The Israelites may have cast lots, but the real work happened before that when they stood before God and said, “Lord, here I am.”
Israel was already God’s chosen people, but that didn’t mean everything just fell into place automatically. God wanted them to show up to respond to Him. Being chosen wasn’t the finish line. It was the starting point. And when they responded, God’s blessing came, not in a flashy way, but quietly, wrapped in what looked like random chance.
The truth is, what seems like coincidence often turns out to be something more. For those who are willing to stand before God and say, “Here I am,” what feels like chance becomes part of His bigger plan.
So instead of worrying about things that feel out of your control, maybe the most important thing you can do is this: before the big moments, before the decisions and uncertainties, take a moment to say, “Lord, here I am.”
That's the kind of preparation that really matters.
And when you do, I believe you'll start to notice, even in the most random moments, that God’s hand is there, quietly guiding you forward.
