사사기 21장
When It All Makes Sense
21:25 : 당시에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었다. 그래서 저마다 자기 뜻에 따라서 하고 싶은 대로 하면서 살았다.
사사기의 후반부에 서술되는 이스라엘은 그야말로 엉망입니다. 차라리 자기 마음대로 살던 사제가 천벌을 받아 죽었고, 말도 안 되는 이유로 시작된 전쟁에서 양쪽이 몰살당했다면 그럴 만도 하지싶었을 것 같습니다. 그런데 이야기는 그렇게 단순하지 않습니다.
사사는 죄를 짓고도 즉각 심판받지 않았고, 전쟁을 일으킨 이들도 끝내 살아남아 무너진 공동체를 다시 세워야 했습니다. 차라리 벌을 받았다는 결말이 나왔다면 이해하기 쉬웠을 텐데하는 생각으로 오늘의 묵상을 시작합니다.
하나님과의 긴밀한 관계로 나아가는 길에는 몇 가지 방해가 되는 생각의 방식이 있습니다. 그중 하나가 '인과 응보'라는 생각이 듭니다. 어떤 사건에는 반드시 그에 상응하는 결과가 따라야 한다는 사고방식입니다.
이런 사고방식은 우리의 삶에 질서와 예측 가능성을 부여하지만, 하나님을 이해하는 데는 한계가 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 계산을 초월하십니다. 하나님의 통치는 인과율의 틀 안에 갇히지 않습니다. 하나님의 은혜는 인간의 논리와 질서로는 설명되지 않고, 때로는 우리의 기대와 전혀 다른 모습으로 나타납니다.
문제는 우리가 그 익숙한 인과의 틀 안에서 하나님을 규정하려 할 때 생깁니다. 하나님을 자신의 논리로 이해하려는 순간, 우리는 하나님의 살아 있는 손길이 아닌 '내가 상상한 하나님'을 붙들게 됩니다. 그리고 그 하나님이 내 삶에서 보이지 않을 때, 우리는 흔들리기 시작합니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 이해할 수 없을 때에도 여전히 일하고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리가 상상하는 결과가 나오지 않을 때에도 여전히 선을 이루고 계십니다.
사사기의 시대는 그런 혼란이 가득한 시대였습니다. 사람들은 자신의 법과 이해, 논리로 살았습니다. 하나님이 완벽히 빠진 사람의 질서의 시대였습니다. 인간의 계산으로 모든 것이 이해될 수 있다고 착각한 시대였지만, 그 질서가 끝내 이스라엘을 어둠 속으로 몰아넣었습니다.
신비와 은혜로 세상을 만지시고 만나시는 하나님의 자리가 빠져버린 세상은 겉보기에 어떨지 몰라도 내면은 혼란으로 가득합니다. 하나님이 빠진 질서는 결국 공허한 틀이었고, 그 틀 안에서 사람들은 스스로를 지키려 했지만 끝내 무너졌습니다.
만약 지금 내가 살아가는 세상이 '다 이해할 수 있는 세상'이라면, 나는 한 번쯤 의심해 보아야 합니다. 하나님은 지금 어디 계신가. 나는 지금 어떻게 하나님을 놓치고 있는가. 그 질문을 던지고, 하나님을 다시 찾아야 하는 것입니다.
하나님은 인간의 논리로 다 헤아릴 수 없는 신비한 방식으로 일하십니다. 이해할 수 없는 상황 속에서, 우리가 멈춰 서서 던지는 질문은 하나님과의 대화의 시작이 됩니다. 그 대화 속에서 우리는 알게 됩니다. 하나님은 우리의 틀을 깨뜨리시며, 그 너머에서 우리를 부르고 계십니다.
Judges 21:25 says, “In those days, Israel had no king. Everyone did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.”
The final chapters of Judges show us a nation in complete chaos. It would almost make sense if the corrupt priest who did whatever he wanted was struck down by divine punishment, or if the senseless war that broke out ended with both sides wiped out. That would be a clean, understandable ending. But that’s not what happened.
The priest wasn’t punished immediately. The people who started the war survived. And those same people had to figure out how to rebuild a broken community. Honestly, it might have been easier to accept if the story had ended with judgment and consequence. That’s the tension where today’s reflection begins.
There are ways of thinking that get in the way of drawing closer to God. One of the most common is the idea of cause and effect, the belief that every action must bring about a matching result.
This way of thinking helps us feel a sense of order. It makes life predictable. But when it comes to understanding God, it falls short. God doesn’t fit into the systems we build. His grace doesn’t follow our logic. His ways often show up in ways we never expected.
The trouble begins when we try to fit God into our cause-and-effect thinking. When we try to understand Him only through our own logic, we end up holding onto an image of God that we’ve created, not the living God who is at work in our lives. And when that imagined God seems absent or silent, we begin to feel shaken. But God is still working, even when we don’t understand. He is still weaving good into the story, even when the outcome isn’t what we thought it would be.
The time of the judges was a time of confusion. People lived by their own laws, their own logic, their own understanding. It was a world where God had been pushed out. A world where people believed everything could be explained with reason. But that logic ended up driving them deeper into darkness.
When the presence of a mysterious, gracious God is missing, the world might look orderly on the outside, but inside, it’s filled with confusion. A world without God’s hand is an empty shell. People tried to hold everything together, but in the end, it all fell apart.
So if the world I’m living in right now feels like a place where everything makes sense, maybe I need to pause and ask, where is God in all this? Have I started to lose sight of Him without even realizing it? These are the questions that lead us back to Him.
God works in ways that we can’t fully explain. And sometimes, in those very moments of confusion, our questions become the beginning of a conversation with Him. In that conversation, we begin to see God is breaking apart our old frameworks and calling us into something beyond what we can imagine.
