사무엘상 4장 3절
I Am Who I Am
4:3 군사들이 진영으로 돌아 오자 이스라엘의 장로들이 부르짖었다. "야훼께서 오늘 우리를 블레셋군에게 패하게 하시니, 이런 변이 어디 있느냐? 실로에 있는 야훼의 언약궤를 모셔 오자. 그것을 우리 가운데 모시면 적군의 손에서 우리를 구해 내실 것이다."
이스라엘은 자신들이 패배한 이유를 하나님이 계시지 않기 때문이라 생각하고 언약궤를 들고 전쟁터로 돌아갔습니다. 그러나 기대와는 달리, 그들은 다시 처참히 패했습니다. 한편 이스라엘이 언약궤를 들고 오자 두려움에 떨던 블레셋 사람들은 예상과 달리 승리를 거두었습니다. 그리고는 기세등등하게 언약궤를 손에 쥐었습니다. 하나님을 손에 넣을 수 있다고 착각한 것입니다.
하나님은 우리의 손에 쥐어지는 분이 아닙니다. 우리가 원하는 대로 움직이시는 분도 아닙니다. 하나님은 어떤 상징이나 도구에 담길 수 있는 분도 아닙니다. 이스라엘도, 블레셋도 하나님을 제대로 알지 못했습니다.
하나님은 어디에나 계시며, 어디에도 갇히지 않으시며, 시공간의 한계에 머물지 않으십니다. 그 누구도 시공간 어딘가에 좌표를 찍고 "여기가 하나님의 자리다"라고 말할 수 없습니다. 하나님은 존재하는 분이시기 때문입니다. 야훼 하나님이 스스로를 모세 앞에 개시하시면서 “I’m who I am.” 이라고 하신 말씀은 이러한 하나님의 속성을 선포하신 말씀이라고 생각합니다.
하나님을 잊은 이스라엘은 보물찾기 하듯 하나님을 찾으려 했습니다. 그들은 손에 잡히는 증표만 찾아 헤맸을 뿐 자신들을 둘러싼 모든 곳에 존재하시는 하나님은 보지 못했습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님은 이스라엘이 찾기 전에 그들을 찾으셨고 그들이 등을 돌렸을 때 조차도 떠나지 않으셨습니다.
돌아보면 제 삶도 그렇습니다. 눈물로 기도하던 밤에도, 기도할 힘조차 잃고 지쳐있던 날에도, 하나님은 제가 보지 못한 그 자리에서 한결같이 함께하셨습니다. 주님은 늘 가까이에 계십니다. 제가 찾을 때도, 찾지 않을 때도, 하나님은 한순간도 제 곁을 떠나지 않으셨습니다.그 사랑을 기억하며, 오늘도 하나님을 찾습니다. 찾지 않아도 늘 곁에 계신 하나님을 더 깊이 바라보며, 그분의 말씀을 붙들고 기도하며 깨어 있기를 원합니다. 항상 함께하시는 하나님께 감사합니다.
1 Samuel 4:3 : When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel cried out, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh, so that He may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
Israel believed they had lost the battle because God wasn’t with them. So they brought the ark of the covenant into the battlefield, thinking His presence would guarantee their victory. But things didn’t go as they expected. They suffered a devastating defeat once again. On the other hand, the Philistines, who had been trembling with fear when they saw the ark arrive, ended up winning and even captured the ark. They assumed they had somehow captured God Himself.
But God cannot be held in our hands. He does not move according to our wishes. He cannot be contained in any symbol or object. Neither the Israelites nor the Philistines truly understood who God was.
God is everywhere, and yet He is not confined to anywhere. He is not limited by time or space. No one can point to a place and say, “This is where God lives,” because God simply is. When Yahweh revealed Himself to Moses and said, “I am who I am,” it was a declaration of this very truth.
The Israelites had forgotten God, and they went searching for Him like He was some hidden treasure. All they looked for were visible signs they could hold in their hands. But they missed the God who was already present all around them. Even then, God didn’t wait for Israel to find Him. He went looking for them. And even when they turned away, He never left.
Looking back, I realize the same is true in my life. On the nights when I cried out in prayer, and even on the days when I had no strength to pray, God was there, present in the places I failed to see. He has always been near. Whether I was seeking Him or not, He never left my side.
So today, I remember His love and choose to seek Him again. I want to stay awake, holding on to His Word and drawing closer to the God who is always here, even when I forget to look. Thank You, Lord, for never leaving.
