The Gift and Risk of Free Will
15:22 사무엘은 다시 사울을 책망했다. “주께서 어느 것을 더 좋아하시겠소? 번제물과 화목제물이겠소, 아니면 주께 순종하는 것이겠소? 주께 순종하는 것이 제사보다 낫고, 주의 말씀을 따르는 것이 숫양의 기름보다 낫습니다.
인생은 선택의 연속입니다. 선택 앞에 선 우리는 늘 자유의지를 쥐고 있습니다. 자유의지는 때로 가장 든든한 동반자가 되지만, 동시에 가장 무서운 적이 되기도 합니다. 그것은 우리를 하나님께로 이끄는 길에서도 마찬가지입니다.
사울에게도 자유의지가 있었습니다. 그는 그 자유의지로 하나님을 선택하고, 그분의 뜻에 순종할 기회를 가졌습니다. 그러나 사울은 눈앞의 현실이 하나님보다 더 크고 선명하게 보였습니다. 현실이 그의 마음을 사로잡았고 그는 순종 대신 자신의 판단을 선택했습니다.
어쩌면 그 선택은 사울의 입장에서 볼 때 더 현실적이고 더 합리적이었을지 모릅니다. 그러나 자유의지가 빚어낸 그 길의 끝은 처참했습니다. 그는 결국 자기 자신조차 구하지 못한 채 무너지고 말았습니다. 나침반 없이 걸음을 재촉하는 길이었기에, 아무리 부지런히 걸어도 도착할 곳은 없었습니다.
하나님께 순종하는 길, 히브리어로 '쉐마'의 길은 단순한 청취가 아닙니다. 그것은 귀를 기울여 듣고, 마음에 깊이 새기며, 그 새긴 마음을 삶으로 드러내는 길입니다. 순종은 생각 없는 복종이 아닙니다. 오히려 자신의 자유의지로 깨달은 바를 선택하고 실천할 때, 순종은 진정한 의미가 완성됩니다.
사울이 걸었던 길은 우리 모두가 걷는 인생의 길과 다르지 않습니다. 사울은 그 길에서 방향을 잃고 쓰러졌지만, 우리에게는 여전히 선택의 여지가 남아 있습니다. 그 길에서 하나님께 귀 기울이고, 그분의 지혜로 참된 두려움을 품으며, 흔들리는 자유의지를 붙들고 끝까지 걸어 나갈 수 있기를 바랍니다.
우리의 자유의지가 하나님께 드리는 가장 진실한 고백이 되기를, 그리고 그 고백이 우리를 하나님께로 한 걸음 더 이끄는 지혜의 길이 되기를 소망합니다.
1 Samuel 15:22 : Samuel said, “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”
Life is a series of choices. And at every decision point, we hold something powerful, our free will. Sometimes it’s our greatest strength. Other times, it becomes our biggest struggle. And that tension is especially real in our relationship with God.
Saul had free will. He had the opportunity to choose God, to obey Him fully. But in the moment of decision, the reality in front of him seemed bigger and clearer than God’s voice. What he saw captured his heart, and instead of obeying, he chose what seemed right in his own eyes.
From Saul’s perspective, his choice might have seemed practical. Maybe even logical. But the path shaped by his own reasoning led to destruction. In the end, he couldn’t even save himself. He walked faster and faster, but without a compass. And no matter how far he went, there was nowhere to arrive.
The path of obedience, the Hebrew word Shema, is more than just listening. It means to listen carefully, to take it to heart, and then to live it out. True obedience is not blind submission. It’s the thoughtful, intentional act of choosing to follow God with our whole will and whole self.
The road Saul walked isn’t so different from ours. He lost his way, but we still have choices ahead of us. We can still stop and listen for God’s voice. We can walk in wisdom and holy fear. And we can learn to hold our fragile free will in steady hands as we follow Him.
May our free will become our truest offering. And may that offering lead us one step closer to the heart of God, a path shaped not by fear or pressure, but by love, wisdom, and trust.
