사무엘상 18장 27절
A Gift, Not a Bargain
18:27 부마가 되려고 부하를 이끌고 나가 불레셋 사람을 이백 명이나 죽이고 그 포경을 모두 거두어 왕에게 바쳤다. 이리하여 사울은 딸 미갈을 주어 그를 사위로 삼았다.
사울이 다윗을 사위로 삼겠다는 제안을 했을 때, 다윗은 자신에게 마땅치 않은 일이라며 거절했습니다. 그러나 사울이 다시 제안하기를, 전쟁에 나가 자신이 정한 수만큼 적군을 해치우면 사위가 될 수 있다고 했습니다. 다윗은 그 조건을 받아들였고, 정해진 기간이 다 차기도 전에 전쟁에 나가 적군을 물리치며 사위가 될 수 있는 조건을 만족시켰고 왕의 사위가 되었습니다.
이 이야기와는 달리 하나님은 저에게 하나님의 자녀가 될 조건을 주시고 증명하라 요구하지 않으셨습니다. 제가 알기도 전에, 제가 어떤 노력을 하기도 전에, 하나님은 이미 예수님을 통해 저를 구원하셨습니다. 그 대가로 치러진 것은 예수님의 피였고, 그 구속의 역사에서 제가 한 일은 아무것도 없었습니다. 그러나 놀랍게도 저는 하나님의 구속의 역사 속에서 구원이라는 놀라운 선물을 받았습니다. 제가 태어나기도 전에 창조주께서 이미 모든 계획을 세우시고 이루신 것입니다.
하나님의 구원의 역사를 묵상할 때마다 차오르는 벅찬 감동과, 구원의 앞뒤를 되짚으며 느끼게 되는 신비로움은 하나님 구원 역사의 자연스러운 귀결이라 생각됩니다. 제가 좋아하는 찬양의 가사 중에 "자격 없는 내 힘이 아닌, 오직 예수님의 보혈로"라는 구절이 있습니다. 이 가사가 주는 깊은 감동은 바로 이러한 하나님의 구속의 역사를 잘 담아내고 있기 때문입니다.
아무런 조건 없이 죄 많은 저를 구원하시고, 제가 태어나기도 전에 저를 향한 구원의 역사를 완성하신 하나님의 은혜에 감사를 드리며 하루를 시작합니다. 오늘도 주님의 사랑 속으로 한 걸음 더 나아가는 이 순간의 기쁨과 설렘을 제 마음에 깊이 새겨주시고, 이 기쁨과 설렘으로 오늘 하루 주님의 발자취를 따라 걷게 해달라고 기도합니다. 매일 아침 함께 결단하며 나아가시는 성경일독 식구들 한분 한분을 위해서도 기도합니다. 하니님께서 부어주시는 사랑의 감동으로 가득찬 하루기 되시기를 바랍니다.
1 Samuel 18:27 David took his men with him and went out to kill two hundred Philistines. He brought back their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
When Saul offered David the chance to become his son-in-law, David initially declined, saying he didn’t consider himself worthy. But Saul came back with a new offer: if David could defeat a specific number of Philistines, he would grant him his daughter’s hand in marriage. David accepted the challenge and, even before the time limit was up, went out to battle and fulfilled the condition. He returned victorious and so became the king’s son-in-law.
How different this is from the way God welcomes us. God never gave me a list of conditions to become His child. Long before I even knew to seek Him, and without any effort of my own, He had already saved me through Jesus Christ. The price paid was the blood of Jesus, and I contributed nothing to that redemptive work. And yet, I was given the greatest gift, salvation. Even before I was born, the Creator had already made and fulfilled His plan for me.
Every time I reflect on the story of God’s salvation, I’m overcome with gratitude. There’s a quiet wonder that grows the more I trace the beginning and end of His saving work. One line from a hymn I love says it well: “Not by my merit, not by my strength but by the blood of Jesus alone.” The deep comfort in those words comes from knowing how clearly they echo the truth of God’s redeeming love.
So this morning, I begin the day in thankfulness for the grace that saved me with no conditions, and for the love that completed a plan for my life long before I even existed. I ask God to let me carry that joy and wonder through every step of today, following in the footprints of Christ.
