사무엘상 25장-28장
The Order Found in Suffering
다윗은 공동체를 이끌고 오랜 숙적이었던 블레셋 땅으로 피신합니다. 사울의 추적을 피하기 위해 그는 위험천만한 선택을 해야 했습니다. 다윗의 끝이 없어 보이는 고난은 사울의 하나님에 대한 불순종에서 비롯된 것입니다. 하나님께 순종한 다윗의 젊은 날이 어찌 이리 억울함으로 가득한가 하는 생각이 듭니다.
이 억울할 것 같은 시간 동안 다윗이 한 일을 생각해 봅니다. 그는 하나님께 순종했고, 부하들을 모았으며, 하나님께 기름부음 받은 자를 해하지 않았습니다. 블레셋 땅으로 들어가 공동체와 함께 살아남을 길을 찾으며 하나님 앞에 엎드렸습니다. 다윗은 자신이 맞이한 현실을 무의미한 고통으로만 바라보지 않았습니다. 그는 자신의 방황이 억울한 결과라는 단순한 해석에 머무르지 않고, 그 안에서 하나님께서 새롭게 세워가시는 질서를 발견했습니다. 고난 속에서도 다윗은 자신이 처한 상황을 통해 인간의 연약함과 그 안에 담긴 신적 의미를 성찰했습니다.
스캇 팩의 "아직도 가야 할 길"에는 이런 말이 나옵니다.
"인생은 어려운 것이다. 그것은 위대한 진리다. 가장 위대한 진리 중 하나다. 그것이 위대한 진리인 것은 우리가 일단 그 진리를 진정으로 알게 되면 - 일단 그것을 진정으로 이해하고 받아들이게 되면 - 인생은 더 이상 어렵지 않기 때문이다. 일단 받아들이고 나면 인생이 어렵다는 사실이 더 이상 중요하지 않기 때문이다."
오늘 말씀을 읽으며 이 말이 우리에게 시사하는 바가 명확하다는 생각이 듭니다. 인생의 어려움은 피하거나 부정하는 것이 아니라, 그것을 받아들이는 순간에 비로소 새로운 통찰의 문이 열린다는 것입니다. 중요한 고리는 '받아들임'과 '극복' 사이에 있습니다. 고난을 받아들인다는 것은 수동적으로 고통을 견디는 것이 아니라, 그것이 내게 던지는 의미를 적극적으로 해석하고 자신의 삶에 통합하는 행위입니다. 이러한 통합의 과정이야말로 인생의 어려움을 넘는 본질적 과정입니다.
하나님께서 나의 인생을 인도하시며, 그 사실을 믿는다면 지금 겪고 있는 어려움조차 하나님의 계획 속에 있는 일임을 받아들일 수 있습니다. 이렇게 믿고 나면, 우리는 어려움 자체에 집중하는 삶에서 벗어나, 고난을 통해 삶의 본질을 더 깊이 이해하게 됩니다. 이는 고난이 가져오는 혼란과 두려움을 억누르거나 외면하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에서 더 큰 질서와 평안을 찾는 적극적인 태도라는 생각이 듭니다.
다윗이 바로 이런 믿음을 실천했다는 생각이 듭니다. 그의 삶의 첫 번째 자리에 늘 하나님이 계셨기에 가능한 일이었습니다. 다윗은 고난을 통해 더 깊이 하나님을 의지하고, 하나님께서 세우시는 질서를 따라갔습니다. 그의 신앙적 태도가 방황의 시간을 단순한 불행으로 머물지 않게 한 것입니다.
고난은 인간의 이성과 의지를 시험하는 자리이지만, 동시에 신앙의 깊이를 더해가는 장이기도 합니다. 진정한 믿음은 인간의 한계 앞에서 시작됩니다. 고난이란 존재의 근본적 불완전함을 드러내는 동시에, 그 불완전함을 넘어서는 초월의 가능성을 보여주는 신비한 여정입니다. 이 여정을 통해 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 다듬어가시는 섬세한 손길을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그 섬세한 손길 속에서 깊어지는 우리의 신앙과 삶을 소망해 봅니다.
David fled to the land of the Philistines—a place long seen as the enemy, in order to escape Saul’s pursuit. It was a desperate decision, yet one he had to make. And still, it’s hard not to wonder: how could such prolonged suffering befall someone who had only obeyed God? David’s trials were the result of Saul’s disobedience, yet it was David who endured the fallout. There’s a certain injustice to it all that feels difficult to ignore.
But then I reflect on what David did during that seemingly unjust time. He remained faithful to God. He gathered his men, but he refused to harm the one anointed by the Lord. He led his people into enemy territory to survive, and in that wilderness, he knelt before God. David never reduced his hardship to meaningless pain. He did not simply name it “unfair” and stop there. Instead, he sought to discover a new kind of divine order rising within it. Even in his exile, David wrestled not just with circumstance, but with the deeper meaning of human frailty and God’s purpose within it.
There’s a quote from M. Scott Peck’s The Road Less Traveled that comes to mind:
“Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult-once we truly understand and accept it-then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters”
Reading today’s passage, I find this truth unmistakably clear. The key to life’s hardships is not to run from them or deny them, but to accept them. And in that acceptance, a doorway to wisdom opens. Between ‘accepting’ and ‘overcoming’ lies a vital bridge. To accept suffering is not to passively endure it—but to interpret it, to draw meaning from it, and to integrate it into one’s life. This very process of integration becomes the path through hardship, not around it.
When we believe that God is guiding our lives, we begin to see even our pain as part of His plan. That belief shifts our attention away from the hardship itself and toward the deeper truths it reveals. It is not about ignoring the chaos or silencing our fear. It’s about seeking a greater peace within it.
I believe this is the faith David lived out. At every turn, he placed God first. His faith allowed his trials to shape him rather than shatter him. Because he trusted God’s hand, he was able to see beyond the suffering and follow the new order God was unfolding.
Suffering tests our reason and our will, but it is also the space where faith matures. True belief begins where human strength ends. Suffering reveals the rawness of our limits while also hinting at the mystery of something greater. Through this mystery, we come to recognize the gentle hand of God refining us. And within that refining touch, I long for a deeper faith and a life shaped by it.
