Anointed, Even in Failure
사무엘하 1장 14절 - 15절 : 다윗은 "네 놈이 어쩌자고 겁도 없이 손을 대어 야훼께서 기름 부어 세우신 이를 살해했단 말이냐?" 하고 꾸짖은 후, 부하 한 사람을 불렀다. "저놈을 쳐죽여라." 하고 다윗이 명령하자 부하가 그를 쳐죽였다.
이스라엘의 왕 사울이 죽었습니다. 하나님이 세우신 왕이었지만, 그는 전쟁터에서 비참한 최후를 맞았습니다.
놀라운 것은 성경이 사울을 끝까지 "하나님의 기름부으신 자"라고 부른다는 사실입니다.
사울은 하나님을 떠났고, 자신의 방법으로 살아가다 비극을 맞았습니다. 그러나 그의 실패와 타락조차 하나님께서 그에게 부으신 기름부음의 흔적을 지워내지 못했습니다.
사울은 처음부터 끝까지 하나님의 기름부으신 자였습니다.
이 사실을 다윗은 누구보다 깊이 이해했습니다. 자신을 죽이려 했던 사울이 죽었을 때, 다윗은 기뻐하지 않았습니다. 오히려 사울을 죽였다고 말한 아말렉 사람을 향해 "어찌하여 하나님의 기름부으신 자를 죽였느냐?"라며 분노했고, 그를 처형했습니다.다윗이 본 것은 사울의 실패가 아니라, 사울이 누구의 손에 의해 세워졌는가라는 사실이었습니다.
이 장면은 가인을 떠오르게 합니다. 동생을 죽인 가인은 범죄자였지만, 하나님은 그에게 표를 주어 보호하셨습니다. 악인이었지만 여전히 하나님의 손길 아래 있었습니다.
성경은 우리가 이해할 수 없는 방식으로, 실패한 자들마저 하나님의 섭리 속에 있음을 보여줍니다. 사울의 인생은 비극이었지만, 그의 존재는 하나님의 계획 속에 놓여 있었습니다.
믿음이란 모든 것이 이해되지 않을 때에도 하나님을 신뢰하는 것입니다. 믿음은 모든 것이 흔들릴 때조차 하나님을 붙드는 것입니다. 이해할 수 없는 그 자리에서조차, 하나님은 여전히 우리를 부르고 계십니다.
2 Samuel 1:14–15 : David said to him, “How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died.
King Saul of Israel is dead. Though he was the Lord’s anointed, he died a tragic death on the battlefield.
What is remarkable is that the Bible continues to call Saul “the Lord’s anointed” until the very end.
Saul turned away from God and lived by his own means, ending his life in disaster. Yet not even his failure or downfall could erase the anointing God had placed on him.
From beginning to end, Saul remained the Lord’s anointed.
David understood this more deeply than anyone. When the man claimed to have killed Saul, David did not rejoice. Instead, he was outraged: “How dare you lay a hand on the one anointed by the Lord?” And he ordered the man’s execution.
David did not focus on Saul’s failure. He focused on the fact that Saul had been chosen by God.
This moment calls to mind the story of Cain. Though Cain committed murder, God marked him for protection. Even in his sin, Cain remained within God’s reach.
The Bible, in ways that often exceed our understanding, shows us that even those who fall remain within the mystery of God’s providence. Saul’s life may have ended in tragedy, but his existence was never outside the boundaries of God’s plan.
Faith is not about understanding everything. Faith is about trusting God when nothing makes sense. It is about holding on to God even when everything else is shaking. Even in places we cannot comprehend, God continues to call us.
