사무엘상 12장 12절
Trusting What We Cannot See
12:12 그런데 너희는 암몬 왕 나하스가 너희를 치러 오는 것을 보고는 야훼 너희 하느님께서 너희 왕이신데도 나에게 '안 되겠습니다. 차라리 왕을 세워 우리를 다스리게 해 주십시오' 하고 요구하였다.
하나님은 어디에나 계십니다. 하지만 그분의 임재는 눈에 보이지 않습니다. 하나님이 창조하신 광대한 세상을 생각해 보면 그분을 우리의 감각기관으로 파악할 수 없는 것이 오히려 자연스럽습니다. 만약 무한하신 하나님을 우리의 제한된 감각으로 온전히 인식할 수 있다면, 그분은 이미 인간의 한계를 넘지 못하는 분이실 것입니다.
이스라엘 백성이 그토록 원했던 왕은 눈에 보이는 존재였습니다. 다른 나라들이 가진 왕을 자신들도 가져야 한다는 강박에 사로잡힌 그들은 왕의 등장으로 닥칠 어려움은 전혀 고려하지 않았습니다. 왕이 있다는 것만으로 안심이 될 것 같았기 때문입니다. 그러나 이스라엘의 진짜 문제는 왕의 부재가 아니라, 눈에 보이지 않는 하나님을 신뢰하지 못하는 불신이었습니다.
우리도 마찬가지입니다. 눈에 보이는 것들은 우리에게 강한 설득력을 가집니다. 화려하고 매력적인 것들이 우리의 시선을 사로잡고, 우리의 마음과 생각을 잠식해 갑니다. 눈에 보이는 것에 매달리는 것은 어쩌면 인간의 본능일지 모릅니다. 그러나 그 본능을 따라갈 때 우리는 종종 더 중요한 것을 잃게 됩니다.
중요한 것들은 눈에 보이지 않습니다. 하나님이 우리의 시야를 뛰어넘는 분이라는 사실은 오히려 그분의 크고 놀라운 존재를 증명하는 일이라는 생각이 듭니다. 보이지 않는다고 해서 존재하지 않는 것이 아니라, 오히려 가장 본질적인 것일수록 우리의 눈으로는 볼 수 없는 경우가 더 많습니다.
주님, 제 마음을 아시는 하나님. 제 시선과 마음이 얼마나 하나님을 떠나 살아가고 있는지 돌아봅니다. 눈에 보이는 것들에 정신을 빼앗긴 나머지, 주님의 임재를 잊고 살아갑니다. 금송아지 우상은 없다고 말하지만, 제 삶에는 수많은 우상들이 자리 잡고 있습니다. 하나님, 이 우상들을 내려놓기로 결단합니다. 가장 소중하고 중요한 주님께 집중하겠습니다. 오늘 하루, 제 마음을 지켜 주시고, 하나님을 바라보며 살아가게 해 주세요. 감사합니다. 주님, 아멘.
1 Samuel 12:12 : But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king.
God is everywhere. But His presence is not something we can see with our eyes. When we think about the vastness of the universe God created, it actually makes sense that we can’t fully grasp Him with our limited senses. If we could completely understand an infinite God with our finite minds, He wouldn’t be much greater than us.
What Israel wanted so desperately was a visible king. They were obsessed with having what the other nations had. They didn’t stop to consider the consequences. They just wanted someone they could see, someone who would make them feel secure. But Israel’s real problem wasn’t the absence of a king. It was their inability to trust the invisible presence of God.
And we’re not so different. The things we can see often feel more convincing. What’s flashy, impressive, or attractive pulls at us and slowly takes over our thoughts and hearts. Relying on what we can see may be a natural instinct, but following that instinct can cost us what matters most.
The most important things in life are usually unseen. The fact that God goes beyond what our eyes can perceive actually speaks to how great He is. Just because we can’t see Him doesn’t mean He isn’t there. In fact, the more essential something is, the more likely it is to be invisible to us.
Lord, You know my heart. You see how often my attention and affections drift away from You. I get caught up in the visible things and forget Your quiet presence. I tell myself I have no golden calves, but in truth, my life is full of idols. Today I choose to lay them down. I want to focus on what truly matters, You. Please guard my heart and help me live today with my eyes set on You. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
