Answer Me, Lord
열왕기상 18:36-37 : 저녁 제사 드릴 때가 되매 선지자 엘리야가 나아가서 말하되 “아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 이스라엘 중에서 하나님이신 것과 내가 주의 종인 것과 내가 주의 말씀대로 이 모든 일을 행하는 것을 오늘 알게 하옵소서. 여호와여 내게 응답하옵소서 내게 응답하옵소서 이 백성에게 주 여호와는 하나님이신 것과 주는 그들의 마음을 돌이키심을 알게 하옵소서” 하매
엘리야가 외칩니다. “여호와여, 내게 응답하소서. 응답하셔서 주께서 참 하나님이심을, 그리고 이 백성에게 아직도 회개의 기회를 주고 계심을 그들이 알게 하소서.” 그의 기도가 끝나자마자, 하늘에서 불이 떨어집니다. 번제물을 삼키고, 나무를 태우고, 돌과 흙을 핥고, 도랑에 고인 물마저 증발시킵니다. 백성들은 그 자리에서 땅에 엎드려 두려움에 떨며 외칩니다. “여호와 그는 하나님이시로다! 여호와 그는 하나님이시로다!”
그러나 두려움은 오래가지 않습니다. 삶을 위협하는 공포 앞에서 인간은 본능적으로 무릎을 꿇지만, 위기가 지나가면 마음은 다시 제자리로 돌아갑니다. 두려움은 생존을 위한 본능일 뿐이며, 그 안에는 사랑이 없습니다. 두려움으로 하나님께 향한 마음은 생명을 향해 나아가지 못합니다. 사랑만이 생명을 향하게 하며, 사랑만이 우리를 주님께 깊이 묶어두는 끈이 됩니다.
하나님은 백 번이고 천 번이고, 아니 그보다 더 많이, 당신의 백성을 돌이키기 위해 기회를 주십니다.
그러나 이스라엘은 그 은혜를 두려움으로만 받아들입니다. 그들은 회개의 자리에 서 있었지만, 생명의 방향으로는 한 발짝도 옮기지 못합니다. 사랑 없이 드린 마음은 결국 메마른 땅처럼 갈라지고, 생기를 잃은 그들은 이미 그 자체로 죽은 것과 같습니다.
주님, 오늘도 저는 생명이신 주님을 향해 나아갑니다. 죄의 방향에서 돌이켜 다시 주님께로 걸어가게 하시니 감사합니다. 제 마음에 사랑을 부어주시고, 그 사랑 안에서 주님을 더 깊이 알아가게 해주십시오. 그 사랑이 제 안에서 흐르고 흘러 다른 이에게도 닿게 해주십시오. 주님, 감사합니다. 오늘도 저를 향해 손 내미시는 그 사랑을 붙잡습니다. 아멘
1 Kings 18:36–37 : At the time of the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed, “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
Elijah cries out, “Answer me, Lord. Answer me so they may know that You are the one true God, and that You are still giving them a chance to turn back to You.”
The moment his prayer ends, fire falls from heaven. It consumes the burnt offering, burns the wood, scorches the stones and the soil, and even evaporates the water in the trench.
The people fall facedown, trembling in fear, crying out, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”
But fear doesn’t last.
When faced with danger, human beings instinctively fall to their knees. But when the crisis passes, their hearts often return to where they were. Fear is a survival instinct, not a path to life. There is no love in fear. And hearts turned toward God only out of fear cannot move toward life. Only love can. Only love can bind us deeply to the Lord and move us in the direction of life.
God gives His people chance after chance. Hundreds, thousands, more than we can count.
But Israel receives His grace only through fear. They stand in the place of repentance, but not a single step is taken toward life. A heart offered without love dries up like cracked ground. Without life within, they are already as good as dead.
Lord, today again I turn toward You, the Giver of life. Thank You for pulling me back from the direction of sin and placing me once more on the path that leads to You. Pour Your love into my heart, and let that love help me know You more deeply. Let it flow within me and reach others through me. Thank You, Lord. Today again, I cling to the love You so faithfully extend to me. Amen.
