Fear Not
열왕기하 6장 16절 : “대답하되 두려워하지 말라 우리와 함께한 자가 저와 함께한 자보다 많으니라 하고”
성경을 읽다 보면 “두려워하지 말라”는 말씀을 참 자주 만나게 됩니다. 처음엔 그 말씀이 하나님께서 고난 중에 있는 이들에게 건네시는 따뜻한 위로처럼 느껴졌습니다. 마치 “힘내라”, “괜찮다”는 격려처럼 받아들였던 것이지요.
그러던 어느 날, 킹제임스 버전에서 이 구절이 “Fear not”으로 번역되어 있는 것을 보았습니다. 중학교 시절, 명령문은 동사로 시작한다는 문법 수업이 문득 떠올랐고, 그 순간 이 말씀이 단순한 위로가 아니라 명령이라는 깨달음이 찾아왔습니다. 하나님께서 두려움에 떠는 우리를 토닥이며 달래시는 것이 아니라, 오히려 그 반대였습니다. “너는 나의 백성이다. 그러니 두려워하지 마라”라고, 하나님의 권위로 우리에게 명하시는 것입니다.
이 명령 앞에 서 있는 우리는 하나님의 백성으로서 그 명령을 따를 책임이 있습니다. “두려워하지 말라”는 말씀은 단순한 기분의 회복이나 감정적 평안을 위한 말씀이 아니라, 하나님 백성의 정체성을 확인하고 살아내는 삶의 태도이자 소명입니다.
이어지는 17절에서 하나님은 그 명령의 근거까지 보여주십니다. 엘리사의 기도를 들으시고, 그의 사환의 눈을 열어 보이신 불말과 불병거—보이지 않지만 분명히 존재하는 하나님의 군대는, 우리가 누구의 편에 서 있는지를 증거합니다. 눈앞의 현실만을 바라보며 흔들릴 때, 하나님은 우리의 지각을 넘는 세계에서 이미 싸우고 계십니다. 하나님께 속한 자는 결코 혼자가 아닙니다.
그러므로 오늘도 하나님께서 우리에게 명령하십니다. “Fear not.” 이 명령을 아멘으로 받으며, 그 명령에 순종하는 하루, 두려움보다 믿음을 선택하는 하루가 되기를 기도합니다.
2 Kings 6:16 : "Do not be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
As I read through Scripture, I find the phrase "Do not be afraid" appearing again and again. At first, I received it as a comforting word from God to those going through hardship, like hearing "Hang in there" or "It’ll be okay."
But one day, I noticed how the King James Version translates it: "Fear not." I remembered a grammar lesson from middle school how imperative sentences start with a verb and suddenly I saw the verse differently. This wasn’t just comfort. It was a command. God wasn’t simply soothing those trembling with fear; He was firmly declaring, “You are My people. Therefore, do not be afraid.”
When we stand before this command, we do so as God’s people, and we have a responsibility to obey it. “Do not be afraid” is not merely a phrase meant to ease our feelings. It is a call to live out our identity as God’s own. It is a way of life, a posture of faith, and a summons to remember who we are.
In verse 17, God reveals the reason behind the command. He hears Elisha’s prayer and opens the servant’s eyes to see horses and chariots of fire. The heavenly army unseen but absolutely real testifies to whose side we are on. Even when the visible world shakes us, God is already fighting for us in ways our eyes cannot yet see. Those who belong to Him are never alone.
So today, God commands us again: Fear not. May we receive this command with a trusting heart and choose faith over fear—one day, one moment at a time.
