이사야 6장 13절
Ashes and the Holy Seed
이사야 6:13 그렇다! 비록 백성 가운데 10분의 1이 살아남는다 하더라도, 그들마저 결국 불에 타서 죽고 말 것이다. 하지만 밤나무나 상수리나무가 잘려 나가더라도, 그 그루터기는 여전히 남아 있는 것처럼, 거기에도 거룩한 씨가 남아서 그 땅의 그루터기가 될 것이다
예언자의 길을 가는 일은 얼마나 무겁고 두렵고 고된 길이었을까요. 이사야에게 내린 말씀은 결국 하나님의 백성이 다 타 죽고 말 것이라는 끔찍한 예언이었습니다. 그 다음 문장, 거룩한 씨가 남아 그루터기가 될 것이라는 말씀을 계시받기 전까지 짧은 순간이었겠지만 이사야가 오갔을 천국과 지옥의 깊이는 상상해보고도 남습니다.
결국에는 회복시키는 하나님께서, 결국에는 희망을 말씀하시는 하나님께서 심판을 하실 때는 그야말로 가차없이 정확히 죄의 무게를 재어 판단을 하십니다. 언뜻 불필요해 보이는 이 과정은 하나님의 역사속에서 끊임없이 반복되었고 현재도 반복되고 있습니다. 하나님은 왜 한번에 사랑으로 모든 것을 회복시키는 방식 대신 반드시 심판과 붕괴를 거치게 하시는지 묻지 않을 수 없습니다.
철학자 키르케고르는 '절망은 자기를 상실한 상태'라고 말했습니다. 자기 자신을 하나님 앞에서 자각하지 못하고 살아가는 존재의 상태는 겉보기엔 어쩔지 몰라도 본질적으로는 절망 속에 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 이스라엘을 불로 태우시는 심판은 응징이라기보다는 오히려 자기 상실에서 벗어나 진정한 자기를 회복시키는 은혜의 불이라고 이해하는 편이 맞을 것입니다. 망하는 것 같지만 번영의 시작이고, 무너지는 것 같지만 다시 세워지는 하나님의 역설로 이해해야 할 것입니다.
하나님은 다 타고 남은 잿더미 가운데 그루터기를 남기십니다. 불에 탄 듯한 인생, 가지가 다 잘려나간 공동체, 더 이상 소망이 없다고 여겨지는 현실 가운데서도 하나님은 씨앗을 남겨두십니다. 땅 속에 있어서 보이지 않을지언정 결국 그 씨앗이 움을 틔우고 깊은 뿌리를 내리며 결국 새로운 시대를 시작하는 생명의 증거가 됩니다.
예언자의 사명은 무너짐 속에서 숨겨진 씨앗을 바라보는 일입니다. 절망을 겪어내되 감히 끝을 말하지 않는 것, 심판을 선포하되 회복을 믿는 것, 무너지 자리에서 반드시 다시 피어나는 하나님의 계획을 증언하는 것입니다. 이사야가 감당한 일이 바로 이것이었습니다.
그리고 지금 우리는 어쩌면 그의 남은 씨앗으로 살아가고 있는지도 모르겠습니다. 무너지고 불타는 일은 언제나 두렵습니다. 하지만 그 두려움 속에 파묻히지 않고 심판을 통해 정화하시고 결국에는 회복으로 이끄시는 하나님의 손길에 의지하며 오늘도 살수 있기를 바랍니다. 허무시는 손길도, 다시 세우시는 손길도 하나님이십니다. 하나님의 역설가운데 희망을 볼 수 있는 제가 되길 기도합니다.
Isaiah 6:13 says, “And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.”
How heavy, terrifying, and grueling must the path of a prophet have been? The message given to Isaiah was devastating: that God's people would be completely consumed. Even if a tenth survived, they too would perish by fire. Before Isaiah was given the final word about the holy seed that would remain as a stump, he must have passed through a moment of emotional extremes, between heaven and hell. That single breath between judgment and hope was surely enough to shake him to the core.
God, who ultimately restores and speaks of hope, also judges with unwavering precision. When He weighs sin, His justice is neither lenient nor delayed. This process, which may seem harsh or unnecessary to us, is in fact a recurring pattern in God's story throughout history. And still, we cannot help but ask why. Why doesn’t God simply restore everything at once with His love? Why must we go through judgment and collapse?
The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once said that despair is the loss of self. To live unaware of oneself before God may not look tragic outwardly, but at its core, it is a state of despair. So when God judges Israel with fire, it is not mere punishment but grace, a fire that delivers them from self-loss and calls them back to who they truly are. It feels like destruction, yet it is the beginning of renewal. It looks like ruin, yet it is the ground for rebuilding. This is the paradox of God.
God leaves a stump in the ashes. In a life that feels burned out, in a community where every branch has been cut off, in a world that seems beyond hope, God still plants a seed. Hidden beneath the soil and out of sight, that seed will eventually sprout, grow deep roots, and become the proof of life and the beginning of a new era.
The calling of a prophet is to see the seed hidden within ruin. To walk through despair without declaring the end. To proclaim judgment while believing in restoration. To testify that even in the rubble, God's plan will surely bloom again. This is the burden Isaiah carried.
And perhaps we are now living as the fruit of that holy seed he once saw. The fear of collapse and fire never leaves us. But we pray not to be buried in that fear. We place our trust in the hand of God who purifies through judgment and leads us back to hope. He is the one who tears down and the one who builds again. I pray that I may see hope in the paradox of God and live today in His restoring grace.
