Comfort That Trains the Soul
예레미아 12장 5절 : 만일 네가 보행자와 함께 달려도 피곤하면 어찌 능히 말과 경주하겠느냐 네가 평안한 땅에서는 무사하려니와 요단 강 물이 넘칠 때에는 어찌하겠느냐?
하나님의 위로는 우리가 예상하는 방식과 자주 어긋납니다. “어찌하여 악인이 형통합니까?”라는 예레미야의 탄식 앞에 하나님은 “사람과 달려도 지치면, 말과는 어떻게 달릴 수 있겠느냐?”고 응답하십니다. 고통 위에 더 무거운 짐을 얹으시는 듯한 이 말씀은 위로처럼 들리지 않습니다. 그러나 이 뒤틀린 위로 속에는 단순한 위로를 넘어서는 하나님의 깊은 의도가 담겨 있습니다.
하나님은 예레미야뿐 아니라 성경 전반에 걸쳐 고통받고 울부짖는 자들의 탄식에 즉각적인 공감보다는 더 넓은 시야를 열어 주십니다. 그것은 고난을 무조건 참으라는 말이 아니라 하나님의 부르심이 인간의 기대보다 훨씬 크고 깊은 차원에 있다는 사실을 알게 하시려는 응답입니다.
하나님의 위로는 감정을 잠재우는 방식이 아니라 존재의 방향을 재조정하는 방식으로 주어집니다. 하나님은 예레미야의 고통을 부정하지 않으시지만 그 고통을 사라지게 해주시지도 않습니다. 다만 그 고통을 더 큰 부르심의 일부로 해석할 수 있는 힌트를 주십니다. 하나님의 위로는 고난을 제거하는 방식이 아니라 그 고난을 감당할 수 있도록 우리를 영적으로 빚어 가시는 방식입니다.
이러한 위로는 때로 막막하게 느껴질 수 있습니다. 우리는 위로를 감정적 치유의 언어로 기대하지만 하나님은 우리를 훈련하고 세우며, 더 깊고 넓은 사명의 자리로 이끄시는 언어로 말씀하시기 때문입니다. 예레미야에게 주신 말씀은 인간의 상처를 통해 하나님의 형상이 더욱 분명히 드러나게 하시려는 하나님의 섭리로 이해됩니다.
하나님의 위로는 때로 뒤틀려 보이지만 그 방향은 언제나 거룩함을 향하고 있습니다. 하나님은 우리를 그 거룩함의 여정으로 초대하시며 말과 함께 달릴 수 있도록 능력을 주시는 분이십니다. 그 부르심 가운데 함께 서게 하시는 하나님께 감사를 드립니다.
Jeremiah 12:5 : If you have raced with people on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe and peaceful land, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?
God’s comfort often comes in ways we do not expect. When Jeremiah cries out, “Why do the wicked prosper?” God replies, “If running with people tires you out, how will you run with horses?” Rather than soothing his pain, God seems to place a heavier burden on top of it. At first glance, this doesn’t sound like comfort at all. But hidden in this strange answer is a deeper purpose—something more than simple relief.
Throughout the Bible, when the brokenhearted cry out, God doesn’t always respond with immediate sympathy. Instead, He often opens their eyes to a larger picture. This doesn’t mean we are told to endure suffering without question. Rather, it reminds us that God’s calling often goes far beyond our expectations and understanding.
God comforts us not by calming our emotions, but by redirecting our lives. He does not deny Jeremiah’s pain—nor does He take it away. Instead, He offers a clue that this pain is part of a much greater calling. God’s comfort does not come by removing hardship, but by shaping us spiritually to bear it with strength and purpose.
This kind of comfort can feel overwhelming. We long for words that heal our emotions, but God speaks in ways that train us, build us up, and lead us toward deeper and wider places of calling. His word to Jeremiah is not a dismissal of his suffering, but a sign of God’s plan to reveal His image more clearly through our wounds.
God’s comfort may look twisted at times, but it always moves toward holiness. He invites us into that holy journey and gives us strength to run with horses. And for that, standing in His call, we give thanks.
