Love That Covers All
베드로전서 4장 8절 : 무엇보다도 뜨겁게 서로 사랑할지니 사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라.
십자가형은 예수님이 이 땅에 계시던 당시 극형 중에서도 가장 잔혹한 형벌이었습니다. 로마가 죄인을 세상 앞에서 철저히 모욕하고 벌하여 죽이기 위해 준비한 처형의 방식이었습니다.
오늘 베드로의 "사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라"는 말씀에서 예수님의 십자가가 떠오릅니다. 예수님은 죄로 가득한 십자가에 달리시면서 자신을 매단 사람들을 심판하지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 그들의 죄를 용서해 달라 기도하시며 그들을 사랑으로 감싸 주셨습니다. 가장 치욕적인 죄인들만 달린다는 십자가 위에서 예수님은 인간의 모든 죄를 사랑으로 덮으셨습니다. 그분은 죄를 폭로하는 대신 사랑으로 죄를 감싸며 세상을 새롭게 하신 것입니다.
그 순간 치욕의 십자가는 의미가 바뀌었습니다. 형벌의 상징이던 십자가는 사랑의 표지가 되었고 죄의 상징은 구원의 약속이 되었습니다. 예수님이 인간을 끝내 포기하지 않으신 사랑으로 인해 죽음은 부활이 되었고 심판은 구원이 되었습니다.
사랑이 아니었다면 이런 반전은 결코 일어날 수 없었을 것입니다. 사랑만이 인간을 있는 그대로 하나님께로 이끌 수 있습니다. 그날의 십자가는 그 사실의 증거입니다. 사랑은 폭로 대신 죄를 덮고, 멸망 대신 구속을 이루며, 사망 대신 생명을 가져옵니다.
지금도 하나님은 우리의 죄를 사랑으로 덮고 계십니다. 그분의 사랑이 끝나지 않았기 때문에 우리는 여전히 새로운 시작의 기회를 얻습니다. 이제 베드로의 말씀처럼 서로의 허물을 덮는 사랑의 사람으로 살아가기를 다짐합니다.
1 Peter 4:8 : Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Crucifixion was one of the most brutal forms of execution during Jesus' time. It was Rome's way of humiliating and destroying a person completely, exposing them to shame before the world.
When Peter writes, "Love covers a multitude of sins," the image of the cross comes to mind. Jesus, nailed to the cross burdened with sin, did not judge those who condemned Him. Instead, He prayed for their forgiveness and embraced them with love. Upon the cross, reserved for the most despised criminals, He covered the sins of humanity with love. Rather than exposing sin, He enveloped it with mercy and, in doing so, renewed the world.
In that moment, the meaning of the cross changed forever. What once symbolized punishment became the mark of love; what once represented guilt became the promise of salvation. Because Jesus refused to give up on humanity, death turned into resurrection, and judgment became redemption.
Without love, such a reversal could never have happened. Only love can lead a broken human heart back to God. The cross itself stands as eternal proof of this truth: love covers instead of condemns, redeems instead of destroys, and brings life where death once reigned.
Even now, God continues to cover our sins with love. Because His love never ends, we are given the chance to begin again. Let us, then, live as people of love, those who choose to cover one another’s faults and reflect the love that once transformed the cross.
