밤의 만남
잿빛 바다와 길죽한 검은 땅
그리고 크고 낮게 떠있는 노란 반달
내가 후미진 곳을 찾아 뱃머리를 밀 때
잠에서 깨어나 격분한 고수머리로
뛰어오르는 놀란 잔물결,
그리고는 속도가 나지 않네 질퍽한 모래밭에 빠져.
이어 1마일의 따뜻한 바다 내음 해변
한 농가가 나타나기까지 건너야 할 세 개의 들판
창을 한 번 살짝 두드리면, 빠르고 날카로운 소리
그리고 불붙은 성냥의 푸른 불꽃,
그리고 기쁨과 두려움이 교차하는 목소리는
두 심장이 서로 맞대고 뛰는 고동소리보다 낮네!
Meeting at night
The grey sea and the long black land;
And the yellow half-moon large and low;
And the startled little waves that leap
In fiery ringlets from their sleep,
As I gain the cove with pushing prow,
And quench its speed i' the slushy sand.
Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;
Three fields to cross till a farm appears;
A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch
And blue spurt of a lighted match,
And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,
Than the two hearts beating each to each!
감상:
마지막 2행의 긴장감은 압도적이며 번역은 모르긴 몰라도 원시만큼 뛰어나다.
