Vasko Popa (조영필 역)
Before play
to Zoran Mišić
One shuts one eye
Peers into oneself into every corner
Looks at oneself to see there are no spikes no thieves
No cuckoos' eggs
One shuts the other eye too
Crouches then jumps
Jumps high high high
To the top of oneself
Thence one drops by one's own weight
For days one drops deep deep deep
To the bottom of one's abyss
He who is not smashed to smithereens
He who remains whole and gets up whole
He plays
(Vasko Popa Selected Poems, translated by Anne Pennington, Penguin Books, 1969)
Before play
for Zoran Mišić
You close one eye
You peer into yourself look in all the corners
Make sure there are no nails no thieves
No cuckoos’ eggs
Then you close your other eye as well
You crouch then jump
You jump as high as high as high
Right up to the top of yourself
Then your own weight drags you down
You fall for days as deep as deep as deep
Down to the bottom of your abyss
If you’re not smashed to bits
If you’re still in one piece and get up in one piece
Then you can play
(translated by Anne Pennington with reworking by Francis Jones, 2011)
Before the game
Shut one eye then the other
Peek into into every corner of yourself
See that there are no nails no thieves
See that there are no cuckoos' eggs
Shut then the other eye
Squat and jump
Jump high high high
On top of yourself
Fall then with all your weight
Fall for days on end deep deep deep
To the bottom of your abyss
Who doesn't break into pieces
Who remains whole gets up whole
Plays
(Homage to the lame wolf, translated by Charles Simic, Oberlin College Press, 1987)
do navrh samog sebe
Odatle se padne svom težinom
danima se pada duboko duboko duboko
na dno svoga ponora
Ko se ne razbije u paramparčad
ko ostane čitav i čitav ustane
taj igra

Zoran Misic: during the struggle for creative freedoms in the early 1950s, the critic, literary historian and anthologist Zoran Misic (1921-1976) provided vital theoretical support for the young avant-garde, and was one of the first to recognize not only the originality, but also the excellence of Vasko Popa's verse. Ivan V. Lalic, another leading poet of the fifties generation, writes a moving, elegiatic tribute to Zoran Misic in Rovinj Quartet (in The Passionate Measure, Anvil, 1989).
