총체성

우리의 젊은 시절, 요즘말로 하면 멘토이자 스승 중 한 분이었던 게오르그 루카치(György Lukács). 당시 문학과 예술의 키워드였던 리얼리즘 논의의 ‘핵심적 지위’를 점유했던, 『역사와 계급의식』의 저자 루카치. 그의 많은 저작 중에서 나를 가장 매혹시킨 것은 『소설의 이론』에 나오는 ‘총체성(tatalitat)’, 한글로 번역해 두면 왠지 그 ‘진의’가 잘 드러나지 않을 것만 같던, 유려한 문체. 『소설의 이론』 첫머리는 이렇게 시작한다.

Happy are those ages when the starry sky is the map of all possible paths --- ages whose paths are illuminated by the light of stars. Everyhing in such ages is new and yet familiar, full of adventure and yet their own. The world is wide and yet it is like a home, for the fire that burns in the soul is of the same essential nature as the stars; the world and the self, the light and the fire, are sharply distint, yet they never become permanent strangers to one another, for fire is the soul of all light and all fire clothes itself in light. -- 'Integrated Civilisations’「The Theory of the Novel」

밤하늘의 별이 모든 길의 지도였던 시절은 얼마나 행복했던가. 그때 모든 길은 별빛이 비추어주고 있었다. 모든 것이 새로웠지만 친숙했었고, 모험으로 가득했지만, 곧 내것처럼 익숙한 것이  되었다. 세상은 드넓었지만 집에 있는 것처럼 편안했는데, 우리의 영혼 속에서 타오르고 있던 불이 저 밤하늘에서 빛나던 별빛과 근본적으로 다르지 않기 때문이었다. 세상과 나, 곧 밤하늘의 별빛과 내 영혼 속 불은 명확하게 구분되기는 하지만, 서로가 영원한 타자는 아니었다. 우리 영혼 속의 불은 빛나는 모든 것의 영혼이었기 때문이다.

덧. 사방으로 흩어지고 살기갈기 찟긴 이 세월을 실감할 때면,  문득 문득 떠오르는 구절이다.
