Angela’s Fig Tree

Synopsis
Angela’s magnificent fig tree attracts all the birds in town. Every morning and every afternoon, no matter how Angela tries to fight them off, the birds keep coming back to her garden to enjoy the figs.
Angela is about to explode with frustration, and just when she is about to give up her precious fig tree, she has a brilliant idea that will sort her problem out. She believes she will live happily ever after -- however, there is real trouble in store for her and her garden.
Take a walk with Angela. You will share her first steps on a delightful journey of growth.
Angela has a small garden.
There are flowers, trees, and birds.
The flowers are bright and colourful,
The trees are tall and short.
The birds are swift and cheerful.
Angela loves being in her cozy garden -- especially under her fig tree.
Yes! Angela has a beautiful fig tree.
She looks after it from the very early morning till the very late evening.
She checks the dark, moist brown soil and sprays fresh water.
She strokes the shiny leaves then taps the strong trunk.
The fig tree grows tremendously well.
Here comes the summer.
She loves to watch the fig tree under the dazzling sunshine.
There are hundreds of figs on the tree.
Some are as small as a garden pea; some are as big as a baby's fist.
Some are as green as a gooseberry; some are as purple as a plum.
Angela is proud of her fig tree - but here comes trouble.
Every morning at ten o'clock, all the birds in the town flock together on Angela's fig tree for breakfast.
The birds are busy singing, chattering, flapping, and PECKING FIGS!
“Shoo! Shoo!” Angela comes out with a shoe in her hand.
The birds fly away.
Every afternoon at five o'clock, all the birds in the town flock together on Angela's fig tree for a feast.
The birds are busy singing, chattering, flapping, and ENJOYING FIGS!
“Gustick! Bustick!” Angela comes out with a long stick in her hand.
The birds fly away.
When the feast is over, there are no figs left for Angela to try.
She is sadder than sad.
She is crosser than cross.
Oh no, what can she do?
Well… Angela asks Tommy and Tommy gives her an idea.
[Illustration: hanging out mirrors and to show the conversation with Tommy: “Hang some shiny mirrors then the sun will make them like a laser beam!”]
Does it work? Nope!
Birds are still coming, and some even strut around!
Angela asks Becky and Becky gives her an idea.
[Illustration: Becky spraying repellent while holding her nose: “With only one pump, no birds will come around!”]
Does it work? Nope!
She does not like the deep strong smell of it herself.
Angela asks Tommy again and Tommy gives her another idea.
[Illustration: Eating all the figs. Tommy says, ‘Eat all the figs before the birds!’]
Does it work? Of course not!
She tries it and she has a bubbly tummy all night.
Angela is fed up.
“This is it!” Angela stamps her feet.
She no longer wants the fig tree in her garden.
She is sadder than sad.
She is crosser than cross.
Oh no, what can she do?
When she is walking, eating or even sleeping, all she can think about is her fig tree.
Until one day, “Hang on a minute.” Angela had an idea.
First, she takes out a hammer.
Then, she fetches some sticks.
Next, she brings out a ladder.
Finally, she spreads out something very special.
What could it be?
A-ha! Of course, she wants the fig tree in her garden!
[Illustration: A big net covers the fig tree like a tent]
Every morning at ten o'clock, Angela can have her tea under the fig tree.
Every afternoon at five o'clock, Angela can have her dinner under the fig tree.
Not a single bird can have a single fig from her garden anymore.
Angela loves her figs.
They are sweeter than sweet.
They are softer than soft.
Angela is happier than happy.
Angela's grin is wider than wide.
One fine day, Angela finds a fig on the ground.
Angela looks up at the fig tree.
All the ripened figs start to fall.
BLUP... BLUP... BLUP...
“Oh! No! There’re too many. I can't eat them all!”
Angela calls Tommy to share, but he does not like figs.
Angela calls Becky to share, but she is away.
Angela then looks around her garden.
It's quieter than quiet.
The fig tree looks heavier than heavy.
Angela feels lonelier than lonely.
[Illustration: She is wandering the garden in boredom, tapping her fingers on the table.]
“Hang on a minute.” Angela has an idea!
First, she puts the ladder up once more.
Then, she takes out something special... what could it be?
Next, she climbs up the ladder.
Finally, she cuts down the net.
Here comes Angela's smile.
The birds' eyes are brighter than bright.
The birds' wings flap faster than fast.
Soon the net is wide open and the birds flock back together again.
The ripe jammy figs are sweeter than ever.
The birds are chirpier than chirpy.
Angela is happier than happy.
