2035년 3월 Drone War II (드론 전쟁 2차 대전)는 종결되었다. 3년간의 비교적 짧은 전쟁이지만 많은 것이 바뀌었고, 그 가운데'드론 혁명 시리즈'라고 불리는 혁신적인 사건들이 일어났다. 훗날 이 급진적인 발전에 의해 사실상전쟁이 조기 종결되었다고 해도 과언이 아니라는평가를 받게 된다.
그 대미를 장식한 것은 '완벽한 무력화'를뜻하는 코드명 'C-NUT( complete neutralization)' 작전이었다. (NUT는 볼트를 꼼짝 못 하게 하는 너트의 의미도 가진다.)
[작전본부 전략 회의실, 2034년 10월 어느 날]
"우리는 2년 전 드론의 날개에 부착되는 순간부터 강력한 회전 속도에 의해 실처럼 변형됨과 동시에 날개와 회전축에 거미줄처럼 들러붙어 비행을 억제하는 무색무취 물질 DI2402 (DI: drone inhibitor)를 성공적으로 개발, 이전쟁의서부전선에서 처음으로 유리한 고지를 점유했다. 그러나, 우리 내부 첩자들에 덕택에 적들은 이미 비밀리에 개발하고 있던 무익 드론 (다*슨사가 참여했다는 소문이..)의 양산을서둘렀고 DI흡착패드까지 장착한 X21기종에 의해 그야말로 무쓸모가 되었다...
이에 우리는 하와이 공군기지에서 추진했던 '인공지능 드론 박스' 프로젝트를 통해 전쟁터 한가운데서도 드론 3,000기 이상을 자율판단 조정할 수 있으며 무선 배터리 전력 공급을 일주일 이상 할 수 있는 '이동형 드론 전진기지'를 개발했다. 모든 전선에 걸쳐 골고루 투하한 덕분에 30% 이상 속수무책으로 밀렸던 전선을 조금씩 회복하며 전진하던 중.."
슬라이드를 넘기던 참모 부사령관은 당시의 상황이 떠오른 듯 잠시 멈추고 큰 숨을 내쉰다.
"Cancer Stem cell (암 줄기세포)"
누군가 나지막이 뱉었다.
부사령관은 이어 말했다.
"그렇다. 우리가 밀리는 전선에 집중하는 사이 적들은 보다 발전된 형태의 이동형 드론 공장 부품들을 지하 튜브를 통해 전송한 뒤 우리 후방부에서 무차별 살상 드론들을 즉시 양산해 퍼뜨리는 게릴라 침투작전을 감행했고.. 다들 알다시피 우리의 많은 동료들을 잃었다.. 민간인의 피해도 다수 생기고..(이후 암 줄기세포 작전으로 불리었다)"
당시 가족을 잃은 부사령관의 담담한 목소리가 더 날카롭게 들렸다. 야산과 폐건물로만 이동하면서 밤 중에만 줄기세포처럼 계속 드론을 생산하는 치밀함으로 상당히 오랜 시간 우리를 괴롭힌 것을 우리 모두 잘 알고 있기에 다들 무거운 침묵 속에 경청하고 있다.
"게다가, 그들은 우리의 희망이었던 '드론 전진기지'작전을 봉쇄하기 위해 초거대 펄스 플라스마 초계기를 만들었고.."
슬라이드 상의 공중 초계기에서 내려다 보이는 우리의 드론 전진 기지들은 그저 개미떼처럼 작아 보였다. 초계기 테두리에 푸른빛이 점점 빠르게 회전하자 반경 약 30킬로미터 이내의 드론 전진기지는 통제 불능이 되어 수만 대의 드론들이 어지러이 비행하며 서로 부딪히거나 적의 드론에 의해 추락하거나.. 심지어 드론 전진기지로 날아와 부딪히며 점멸해갔다.
"따라서 우리는 지금 전선의 전 후방에서 펼쳐지는 적의 양동작전에 의해 샌드위치처럼 압박을 받고 있다."
"자.. 어떻게 해결하는 것이 좋을지 의견 있는 사람?"
'지금은 침묵이 금이다.'
잇따른 실패로 인해 다들 속으로 이렇게 생각하고 있다.
지난 전쟁 초기 스파이가 있었던 9팀 11팀을 제외한 전략 1팀부터 21팀까지 총 19팀이 지난주 제출한 전략-전술 제안은 이미 불승인 난 상태이므로 휴지 흩날린 벌로 뺏긴 사료 그릇 쳐다보는 똘망이 마냥 그저 눈의 초점을 흐리며 기다리는 게 최선.
"음, 그럼 이제 들어오게 하지?"
침묵으로 일관하며 지켜보던 총사령관의 입술에 일제히 모든 참석자들의 시선이 집중되었다.
그때,
사령관실 출입문이 열리며 한 사내가 천천히 걸어 들어왔다. 왼쪽 가슴 위에는 왼쪽으로 45도 정도 기울어진 B글자의 한가운데 초록색 화살표가 꽂혀있는 심벌(symbol)이 그려져 있고 바로 아래 'MassICT' (1) 가 그려진 엔지니어 사이언티스트 슈트를 입고 있었다.
"각 전략팀의 에이스들로 구성된 사령관 직속 X-전략팀에서 추천된 극비 전술을 소개한다. 이 분은 Biological Target Standard (2)사의 자회사이며 질량분석연구소 회사인 MassICT 대표님이시다. 개별 인사 등은 생략하고 바로 설명 부탁드립니다. 대표님."
"그리고, 지금부터 보안을 위해 모두 VR 브레인스토밍 룸으로 접속한다."
회의실에 있는 모든 사람들이 일제히 새끼손가락에 낀 반지를 바깥쪽으로 살짝 틀자 렌즈를 통해 가상 룸이 생성되고 MassICT대표는 뇌파를 통한 프레젠테이션을 시작했다.

발표가 끝난 후 사령관이 말했다.
"금일 회의와 투표를 통해 이작전을 감행하는 것으로 결정이 되었다. 대표님께서는 필요한 지원 혹은 요구사항이 있으시면 적극적으로 도와드리겠습니다. 주저 말고 말씀해주십시오."
대표는 공손하게 고개를 숙였다 들며 말하였다.
"이렇게 위험하고 과감한 전술에 동의해주셔서 감사합니다. 우선은 저희 회사의 인력과 물자로는 단기간에 목표물량에 도달하기 힘드니 연합사령부의 인가 하에 각정부의 자원과 인력을 비밀리에 다음 달까지 지원 부탁드립니다."
사령관은 흔쾌히 동의했다. 사실 다른 방법은 없다. 무조건 되어야 한다는데 각국 정부도 별 이견이 없을 터였다.
"그리고.."
대표는 잠시 주저했다.
"편안하게 알려주시오. 당신이 바라는 바를"
대표는 이내 굳은 얼굴로 말했다.
"이번 작전은 우리 회사 사람들의 큰 희생이 뒤따를 수도 있습니다. 그렇지만 우리들 역시 이번 작전을 성공 시 키위 한 모든 각오를 할 것입니다. 만약 이번 작전이 성공하게 된다면.."
"된다면?" 사령관이 되물었다.
"원래의 계획이라면 2040년부터 화성 이주를 위한 프로젝트가 본격 가동이 되는 것으로 알고 있는데, 우리 회사가 참여할 수 있도록 해주십시오."
총사령관은 잠시 대표를 응시하더니
이내 너털웃음을 터뜨렸다.
"어차피 이번 작전이 실패로 돌아가면, 우리에겐 미래가 없소. 이 지구와 함께 끝날 것이니.. 좋소. 그렇게 합시다. 여기 있는 모두가 증인이며 각국 정부에 지원 요청할 때 잠정적 동의를 받아 낼 것이오."
총사령관이 자리에 일어나서 현장의 모두를 한 명씩 눈을 응시하며 결의에 찬 목소리로 말하였다.
"죽기 위해 태어난 자는 없다.
그러나, 샛별이건 초신성이건 우리는 다 같은 별이며 함께 새로운 역사를....
하지만,
난 개인적으로는 다음 이 자리에서 모두 건강한 모습으로 함께 하길 간절히 바란다.
