The Work of Many Hands
출애굽기 36장 1절 : 야훼께서는 브살렐과 오홀리압과 그 밖에 재주 있는 모든 사람들에게 지혜와 재간을 주시어, 성소에서 제사 드리는 데 쓸 모든 것을 잘 알아서 야훼께서 명하신 대로 만들게 하셨다.
하나님은 말씀을 주실 뿐만 아니라, 그 말씀이 현실이 되는 과정 속으로도 우리를 초대하십니다. 성막을 지을 때, 궤를 다듬을 때, 등잔대에 빛을 불어넣을 때, 울타리를 세울 때, 각자의 자리에 선 이들은 단순한 기능인이 아니라, 말씀을 눈에 보이는 형태로 짓는 사람들입니다. 어떤 이는 공사의 물자 목록을 정리하고, 어떤 이는 제복을 만들고, 또 어떤 이는 완성된 기구를 점검합니다. 중요한 점은 거대한 성막을 세우는 일도, 사제들이 입을 제복에 세밀한 한 땀을 놓는 일도, 하나님의 섭리 안에서는 같은 무게를 지닌다는 것입니다. 모든 손길이 모여야 하나님의 말씀은 이 땅 위에 단단히 자리 잡습니다.
하지만 안타깝게도 많은 경우 우리는 스스로를 너무 작게 느낍니다. 남들과 비교하며 자신의 몫이 하찮다고 여깁니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리에게 무에서 유를 창조하라고 명하지 않으십니다. 오히려 우리 안에 이미 소명을 심으셨고, 그것을 이루기 위한 지혜와 재간 또한 허락하셨습니다. 브살렐과 오홀리압이 그랬던 것처럼, 하나님은 각 사람에게 걸맞은 지혜를 주시고, 적절한 때에 손을 이끌어 주십니다.
우리의 삶을 제사로 드린다는 것은, 우리가 받은 재능을 알아채고 그것을 하나님께 기꺼이 내어놓는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리를 있는 모습 그대로 사랑하시며, 불가능한 짐을 지우지 않으십니다. 노력은 필요하지만, 스스로를 한계까지 몰아붙이는 것은 하나님의 뜻이 아니라는 것이 제가 이해하는 하나님의 모습입니다.
하나님과의 관계가 깊어질수록 "진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라"는 말씀이 더 선명하게 다가오기를 원합니다. 하나님은 우리를 억누르기 위해 부르시는 분이 아니라, 자유와 사랑을 주시기 위해 부르시는 분입니다. 우리가 그 뜻을 온전히 받아들이고, 기쁨으로 맡은 일을 감당할 수 있기를 기도합니다.
Exodus 36:1
"The LORD has gifted Bezalel, Oholiab, and all the skilled workers with wisdom and understanding to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary, just as the LORD has commanded."
God doesn’t just give us His word. He also invites us to be part of making that word real. When the Israelites built the tabernacle, every worker had a role to play. Some carved wood for the ark, some shaped the lampstand, some sewed the priests' robes, and others organized materials. They weren’t just craftsmen. They were bringing God’s instructions to life. And whether they were building the great tabernacle or stitching a tiny detail on a garment, their work mattered equally in God’s eyes. Every effort came together to make God's dwelling place a reality.
But too often, we underestimate ourselves. We look at others and feel like what we do isn’t important enough. Yet, God never asks us to do the impossible. Instead, He gives us the skills we need and the wisdom to use them. Just like Bezalel and Oholiab, God equips each of us in unique ways and guides our hands when the time is right.
Offering our lives to God doesn’t mean doing something grand or extraordinary. It means recognizing the gifts He has given us and using them for Him. God loves us as we are and doesn’t expect us to carry burdens we weren’t meant to bear. Hard work has its place, but exhausting ourselves beyond our limits is not His desire.
The more we grow in our relationship with God, the more we understand His promise, "The truth will set you free." God’s call is not about pressure or restriction. It’s about freedom and love. May we embrace His purpose for us and do our work with joy, knowing that every effort, big or small, has meaning in His plan.
