When God Is Silent
사무엘하 19장 1절 : 이 말을 듣고 왕은 가슴이 미어지는 것 같아 성문 위에 있는 골방으로 올라가 "내 자식 압살롬아, 내 자식아, 내 자식 압살롬아, 차라리 내가 족을 것을, 이게 웬일이냐? 내 자식 압살롬아, 내 자식아."하며 목놓아 울었다.
압살롬의 반역이 끝났습니다. 하지만 다윗이 마주한 현실은 승리가 아닌 상실이었습니다. 그는 왕좌로 돌아왔지만 그 길은 상처투성이였고 살얼음판을 걷듯 조심스러웠습니다. 시므이, 므비보셋, 바르실래 등 다양한 인물들과의 관계는 복잡하게 얽혀 있었고, 유다와 이스라엘 간의 민심도 여전히 분열되어 있었습니다.
이 복잡한 정치적·감정적 상황 가운데, 유독 눈에 띄는 것은 하나님의 침묵입니다. 과거의 다윗은 중요한 결정을 앞두고 하나님께 자주 묻고 그때마다 분명한 응답을 받았습니다. 그러나 지금 그는 하나님의 음성 없이 스스로 판단하고 조율하며 균형을 잡기 위해 고군분투하고 있습니다. 모든 것이 불확실한 가운데 다윗은 더 이상 하나님의 직접적인 말씀을 기대하지 못한 채, 무게감 있는 침묵과 함께 하루하루를 걸어가고 있습니다.
성경은 다윗이 이 침묵을 어떻게 느꼈는지 직접 말하고 있지 않습니다. 그러나 앞선 영광과 기름부으심을 기억할 때 이 시기의 다윗은 하나님의 침묵 자체가 가장 큰 시련이었을지도 모릅니다. 모든 영광 뒤에 혼란과 분열이 뒤따랐고 그 무게를 홀로 감당해야 했던 다윗의 마음을 떠올리면 우리는 그의 외로움과 고단함을 짐작할 수 있습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 다윗은 그 침묵을 외면하거나 도망치지 않았습니다. 오히려 그는 자신의 죄와 실패를 감당하며, 그 안에서 다시 걷기 시작했습니다. 리더로서의 그의 모습은 예전처럼 강하고 명확하진 않았지만 그 어느 때보다 하나님 앞에서 조심스럽고 겸손한 걸음을 내딛고 있었습니다. 침묵 속에서 자란 리더십, 그것이 바로 하나님께 붙들린 다윗의 회복이었습니다.
우리의 삶에도 하나님의 침묵이 찾아올 때가 있습니다. 기도에도 응답이 없고, 말씀이 멈춘 것 같은 시간들이 있습니다. 하지만 그 침묵이 하나님의 가장 깊은 말씀이라는 생각을 해봅니다. 말씀이 들리지 않을 때 멈추는 대신 말씀이 멈춘 그 자리에 조용히 머무르며 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 보이지 않아도 여전히 일하고 계시며 늘 우리와 함께 계시기 때문입니다.
2 Samuel 19:1 says, “The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said, ‘O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom. If only I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son.’”
Absalom’s rebellion had ended. But what David faced afterward was not a moment of victory. It was the weight of loss. Though he returned to the throne, the way back was covered in sorrow and uncertainty. His path was marked by grief, and every step forward was careful and heavy. His relationships with those around him, Shimei, Mephibosheth, Barzillai, had grown complicated. The people of Judah and Israel remained divided in loyalty and heart.
Amid this political and emotional tangle, what stands out most is the silence of God. In the earlier chapters of David’s life, we see him repeatedly inquiring of the Lord and receiving clear answers. But here, that familiar voice does not speak. David makes decisions without divine direction. He weighs circumstances, negotiates outcomes, and tries to hold the kingdom together, but without the reassurance of God’s word. He walks forward in the quiet.
The Bible does not tell us directly how David felt about God’s silence. Yet if we remember the anointing, the battles won by God's hand, the psalms born from intimacy with the Lord, we can imagine that this silence was among the hardest things David had to bear. The glory of the past had faded, and confusion followed. Now he carried it all alone, waiting for a voice that did not come.
Even so, David did not ignore the silence. He did not escape it or pretend it was not there. Instead, he accepted it. He owned his failures, lived with the consequences, and walked forward. His leadership in this chapter does not look like the bold and confident strength of his youth. It is slower and quieter, more careful and humble. But perhaps it is also more deeply rooted in God. In the silence, David was being refined. His restoration was not sudden or dramatic, but slow and faithful.
We, too, experience seasons when God seems silent. We pray and receive no answer. We wait and feel nothing. But that silence may carry its own kind of presence. It may be God asking us to stay, to trust without hearing, to keep walking without clarity. When the Word is still, perhaps we are being invited to be still too. Even in silence, God does not abandon us. His work continues, quietly, faithfully, alongside us.
