Punctuation Marks #3: Question Marks

Question Marks (물음표) 에 대한 일반적인 rule 들은 아래와 같습니다:

A question mark, like a period, serves as a stop sign – a break in thought – with an added air of mystery. (물음표는 마침표와 마찬가지로 정지싸인의 역할을 하며 - 즉, 생각의 진행 또는 표현 중 잠시 쉬는 곳 - 미스테리한 분위기를 만들어주기도 한다)

1) Use a question mark after a direct question (직접적인 형태의 질문의 마지막에 쓴다).

Can you send me the file by Friday?

2) Use a question mark after each item in a series of questions within the same sentence (한 문장 안에 질문에 해당하는 요소들이 많을 경우 따로 문장을 만들지 않고 그 각각의 마지막에 물음표를 넣는다).

Which of the candidates has the most experience? Mary? Joe? Jeff?

From this sentence, is the correct punctuation mark a period? A comma?

3) Do not use a question mark in a series unless you mean it (한 문장의 마지막에 여러개의 물음표를 사용하지 않는다 - 강요, 추궁, 또는 불신의 의미로밖에 해석이 안 되는 표현임).

Did you make sure to deliver this in person????

4) Try rewriting question sentences without the question marks (물음표 없이 질문문장을 만드는 것도 예의있는 diplomatic 한 문장구성이 가능한 한 방법임. 이 방식을 toning down method 라 함).

How are you? 도 좋지만 I hope all is well with you.

How was your weekend? 도 좋지만 I hope your weekend was pleasant.

Can you send me the file by Friday? 도 좋지만 I would like to receive…. by Friday.

5) Use a question mark enclosed in parenthesis to express uncertainty or doubt (의심 또는 불확실한 사항을 표현할 경우 아래와 같이 괄호 안에 물음표를 넣은 후 쓴다).

He said the contract is due on April 8 (?).
