한국어를 그대로 번역을 하면 안 되는 경우의 한 예
아주 일반적인 업무서식의 경우 그나마 번역기를 사용하거나 2-3시간을 걸려 작성한 (이렇게 많은 시간을 할애했어도 검토해 달라고 부탁받은 제 눈에는 다소 어설프게 보이지만) 영문 서식을 발송해도 큰 문제는 되지 않습니다. 물론 완성도는 100점 만점에 보통 60점 정도겠지만요. 하지만 일반 이메일이 아닌, 차후 법적인 무엇인가로 확장될 수 있거나 아주 예민한 내용을 다룬 서식, 또는 강한 어조의 통보 성격의 서식일 경우 번역기를 쓸 경우 아주 괴이한 version 이 탄생하는 경우가 꽤 많습니다. 직접 번역하는 경우는 그 정도가 더 심하겠지요.
아래와 같은 한국어 version을 예를 들어 보도록 하겠습니다. 실제 사용된 경우입니다:
"당사는 귀사와의 본건에 관한 합의를 EU지역에 관해서만 진행하고자 하며, 당사가 EU지역에서만 합의를 진행함으로써 당사가 귀사에 대해 합의의 효력이 미치지 않는 다른 국가(지역)에서 불필요하게 귀사와 분쟁 상태를 유지하거나 새롭게 발생시키겠다는 의미는 전혀 아니다. 오해가 없으면 좋겠다."
1. 위 한국어 version을 GOOGLE TRANSLATE을 통해 돌려보면 이런 outcome 이 나옵니다:
"We wish to reach an agreement with you regarding this matter only in the EU region, and by making an agreement only in the EU region, we will not have to negotiate with you unnecessarily in other countries (regions) where the agreement has no effect on you. "This does not mean at all that we intend to maintain a state of conflict or create a new one. I hope there is no misunderstanding."
2. 위 한국어 version을 GOOGLE 보다 더 괜찮은 번역기를 통해 돌려보면 이런 outcome 이 나옵니다:
"We intend to settle this matter with you only in the EU, and our decision to settle only in the EU does not in any way imply that we intend to unnecessarily maintain or create disputes with you in other countries (regions) where the settlement is not enforceable against you. We hope there is no misunderstanding."
확실히 두 번째 version 이 더 좋아 보입니다. 이유는:
1) "We will not have to"라는 '싸가지'없는 표현이 제거되었고
2) We라는 주어가 일률적으로 사용되었고
3) "does not in any way"라는 문구로 오해의 소지를 더 낮춤
3) "imply"라는 단어 ('의미'하는)가 사용되었고
4) 협박조의 문구가 삭제됨
"This does not mean at all that we intend to
maintain a state of conflict or create a new one."
하지만 두 번째 version 에도 실수가 몇 개 보이지요. 이를 수정하여 아래와 같이 manual 작업을 해 본 결과물은 아래와 같습니다. 개선된 부분을 밑줄을 그어보았습니다:
"We are seeking to reach an agreement with you only for the territories of the EU, and even if the agreement is proceeded only for the EU, we do not have any intention to unnecessarily maintain disputes or newly start disputes with you in the regions where the agreement does not affect. We hope you do not misunderstand our intention."
약간의 수정으로 분위기가 아주 다른 version 이 탄생할 수 있습니다. 모르는 단어들도 아니지요.
