1. What kind of work are you doing in Jeju?

I have a few different jobs. My husband and I run two pensions on the island and while the day to day work of pension management falls to him, I also help out. Mostly I help him with cleaning and I handle our social media presence. Occasionally, I help foreign customers who need special assistance if they don't speak Korean. I also work as an English tutor. This is part-time and usually in the evenings. Most of my students are in elementary school, but I do teach some adults. Lastly, I do pet sitting. We typically take care of dogs at our home while their owners are on vacation. Right now we are watching 3 dogs and one cat! 

1. 제주에서 어떤 일을 하고 계신가요?

저는 몇 가지 다른 직업이 있습니다. 제 남편과 함께 제주에서 두 개의 펜션을 운영하고 있어요. 일상적인 관리 업무는 남편이 하고, 주로 저는 청소를 돕고, 소셜 미디어 관리합니다. 그리고 한국어를 할 수 없는 외국인 고객들이 도움이 필요할 때도 제가 소통합니다. 그리고 또 저는 영어 과외 선생님으로 일을 합니다. 시간제로 보통 저녁에 합니다. 학생들 대부분은 초등학교에 다니고 있지만, 어른들도 가르칩니다. 마지막으로, 저는 펫시팅을 합니다. 보통 주인이 휴가를 가는 동안 집에서 강아지를 돌봅니다. 우리는 지금 3마리의 강아지와 1마리의 고양이를 보고 있습니다!

2. What is your daily routine? 

(I'm curious about your routines and habits to get things done.)

Typically I wake up at 7am and walk the dogs. Then I eat breakfast and prepare for my classes. After that I usually clean a bit around the pension. If we are busy at both pensions, I go and clean the pension we run in Andeok. Then I go to the gym to exercise. After working out I teach and go home to have dinner. Around 9:30 pm I walk the dogs again and then go to bed.

2. 하루 일과가 어떻게 되시나요? (일을 하기 위한 루틴과 습관이 궁금합니다)

보통 아침 7시에 일어나서 강아지들을 산책시킵니다. 그리고 아침을 먹고 수업을 준비합니다. 그 후에 주로 펜션 주변을 청소합니다. 만약 펜션이 바쁘면, 안덕에서 운영하는 펜션에 가서 청소를 합니다. 그리고 운동을 하러 체육관에 갑니다. 운동을 한 후에, 학생들을 가르치고 저녁을 먹기 위해 집으로 갑니다. 오후 9시 30분쯤 다시 강아지들을 산책시키고 잠자리에 듭니다.

3. I'm curious about your work process in a week, month, and year. Do you have any seasonal tasks?

Our work is all very seasonal. In the summer and winter we are usually busy at the pensions so we clean most of the day. We also have the most pets at that time so we are caring for several dogs and maybe a cat. For tutoring, I'm usually busiest in fall and spring. Every day is a little different, but I enjoy the variety.

3. 일주일, 한 달, 한 해의 업무 과정이 궁금해요. 계절 별로 달라지는 일들이 있을까요?

우리의 일은 모두 계절에 따라 매우 바쁩니다. 여름과 겨울에는 보통 펜션이 바빠서 하루의 대부분을 청소합니다. 그리고 그 시기에 가장 많은 반려동물을 돌봐야 하기 때문에 여러 마리의 강아지와 고양이를 돌보고 있습니다. 과외는 보통 가을과 봄에 가장 바쁩니다. 매일 매일은 조금 다르지만, 저는 다양한 일을 즐깁니다.

4. How did you end up doing what you do now?

When I first came to Jeju, I was working as a regular teacher at an English center. I like teaching, but in Korea if you're not working at an international school as a native teacher, it can be hard to make money. After my husband (who is Korean) and I got married, I could change my visa. My marriage visa allowed me to do any kind of work in Korea I wanted. 

My husband and I started to manage pensions the year we got married. My husband was looking for a new career and we have a big dog, so he wanted to live and work in a place with a big yard for her to play in. He thought running a pension would be the best way to give her space to play and make money. We've been running pensions ever since.

As far as petsitting, this work kind of fell into my lap. I spent summers in Jeju while working at the English center when most teachers went away on vacation. I saw many people were looking for catsitters and it seemed easy to do, so I offered to take care of their cats. After my husband and I moved in together we bought some kennels from a local vet. We saw that there were not many cat hotels on the island so we planned to give cats a place to stay. However, it turned out that there are more dogs looking for a place to stay than cats, so we started to accept dogs too. Thankfully, many of our customers recommended us to their friends, so while we only pe tsit rarely before, this year we've been very busy!

4. 어떻게 지금의 일을 하게 되었나요.

처음 제주에 왔을 때, 영어 센터에서 정규 교사로 일하고 있었습니다. 저는 가르치는 것을 좋아하지만, 한국에서는 원어민 교사로 국제 학교에서 일하지 않으면 돈을 벌기 어려울 수 있습니다. 남편(한국인)과 제가 결혼한 후, 저는 비자를 바꿀 수 있었습니다. 결혼 비자로 인해 한국에서 제가 원하는 모든 종류의 일을 할 수 있었습니다.

남편과 저는 결혼한 해에 펜션을 관리하기 시작했어요. 남편은 새로운 직업을 찾고 있었고 저희에게는 큰 개(말랑이)가 있어서, 말랑이가 놀 수 있는 큰 마당이 있는 곳에서 살고 일하기를 원했어요. 남편은 펜션을 운영하는 것이 말랑이가 놀 수 있고, 돈을 벌 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법이라고 생각했어요. 그 이후로 저희는 펜션을 운영하고 있어요.

펫시팅은 제게 딱 맞는 일이었습니다. 영어 센터에서 일하는 동안 대부분의 원어민 선생님들이 휴가를 떠났을 때 저는 제주에서 여름을 보냈습니다. 많은 사람들이 고양이를 돌볼 사람을 찾는 것을 보았고, 제가 고양이를 돌보겠다고 제안했습니다. 남편과 함께 이사 온 후에, 우리는 몇 개의 개집을 구입했습니다. 제주도에 고양이 호텔이 많지 않아서, 고양이에게 머물 장소를 주기로 계획했습니다. 그런데 알고 보니 고양이보다 머물 장소를 찾는 개가 더 많다는 것을 알게 되었고, 개들도 받아들이기 시작했습니다. 감사하게도, 많은 고객들이 친구들에게 우리를 추천해서, 올해는 매우 바빴습니다!

5. What did you do before that?

After graduating from college I came directly to Korea, but at first I lived on the mainland. After four years living and teaching on the mainland, I moved to Jeju and taught at an English Center. My only job as an adult was teaching English until my husband and I got married and started managing pensions.

5. 그 전에 하셨던 일들은 무엇이었나요?

대학을 졸업하고 바로 한국으로 왔지만 처음에는 육지에서 살았습니다. 4년 동안 본토에서 생활하고 가르친 후, 제주로 이주해서 영어 센터에서 영어를 가르쳤습니다. 성인이 되어 나의 유일한 직업은 남편과 결혼하여 펜션 관리를 시작하기 전까지 영어를 가르치는 것이었습니다.

6. How can I start doing what I'm doing now?

If you want to start managing a pension, I recommend talking to my husband ㅎㅎㅎ He's the boss. I just help him out however I can.

For those who want to start tutoring English, I think the biggest barrier is getting a long term visa in Korea. I was lucky, because getting married gave me a chance to have a visa not connected with a workplace. 

To start petsitting, I think first you should go to someone's house to petsit, either just dropping in twice a day or doing housesitting and petsitting together. If you want to work with Korean people, I think it is best to find clients on karrot market (당근마켓). For finding foreign clients, I think it's best to look for ads on Facebook groups for foreigners on the island.

6. 어떻게 하면 지금 하고 있는 일을 시작할 수 있을까요?

펜션 관리를 시작하고 싶다면 남편과 얘기해보는 걸 추천해요. 하하하. 그 분이 사장님이시거든요.

영어 과외를 시작하려는 사람들에게 가장 큰 장벽은 한국에서 장기 비자를 받는 것이라고 생각합니다. 저는 운이 좋았습니다. 결혼을 통해 직장과 관련되지 않은 비자를 받을 수 있는 기회가 생겼기 때문입니다.

펫시팅을 시작하려면 먼저 누군가의 집에 가서 하루에 두 번 정도 들러주거나, 하우스시팅과 펫시팅을 함께 하는 것이 좋다고 생각합니다. 한국인들과 함께 일하고 싶다면 당근마켓에서 클라이언트를 찾는 것이 가장 좋은 것 같아요. 외국인 고객을 찾으려면 섬에 거주하는 외국인을 위한 Facebook 그룹에서 광고를 찾는 것이 가장 좋은 것 같습니다.

7. What do you enjoy about your job?

When working at the pension, I enjoy being able to see the result of my effort. When teaching, it can be a lot of work with an uncertain outcome. Will the child succeed in life? Will they remember this grammar point when they talk to an English speaker? However when you clean a room, you can see the immediate result of your effort. It's very satisfying.

For teaching, I enjoy working with one student. Working in a classroom with many students can be overwhelming and difficult. Working with one student at a time gives more time to focus on an individual student's needs and I can get to know them more. My students are all very funny and interesting.

I love so many things about petsitting. I love having more pets around and giving them lots of love. I love going on long walks at the beach or different places around Jeju with the dogs we watch. I love sitting at the computer at night with a cat curled up on my lap. The pets we watch are lovely and I love having them stay with us.

7. 일을 하면서 만족하는 점은 무엇인가요?

펜션에서 일할 때는 노력의 결과를 볼 수 있다는 점이 즐겁습니다. 가르칠 때는 결과가 불확실한 일이 많을 수 있습니다. 아이가 인생에서 성공할 수 있을까요? 아이가 영어를 할 때 이 문법 포인트를 기억할 수 있을까요? 하지만 방을 청소하면 노력의 즉각적인 결과를 볼 수 있습니다. 매우 만족스러워요.

가르칠 때는 한 명의 학생과 함께 일하는 것이 즐겁습니다. 많은 학생이 있는 교실에서 작업하는 것은 부담스럽고 어려울 수 있습니다. 한 번에 한 명의 학생과 함께 일하면 개별 학생의 필요에 더 집중할 수 있고 학생에 대해 더 많이 알 수 있습니다. 제 학생들은 모두 매우 재미있고 흥미롭습니다.

저는 펫시팅의 많은 점을 좋아합니다. 저는 더 많은 반려동물을 키우고 그들에게 많은 사랑을 주는 것을 좋아합니다. 제가 돌보는 반려견들과 해변이나 제주의 여러 곳을 산책하는 것을 좋아해요. 밤에는 고양이를 무릎에 앉혀놓고 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아있는 것도 좋아해요. 저희가 돌보는 반려동물들은 정말 사랑스러워서 함께 지내는 것을 좋아합니다.

8. What do you find challenging about your job?

The most challenging part about running a pension is that there are no off days. It's difficult to go on vacation, see friends, or even go out to dinner, because we never know when our customers will need us. We have some free time in the mornings if our pension is not busy, but it's difficult to meet up with friends or have a full day to ourselves to relax.

The most challenging part of tutoring is probably teaching when the students are not in a good mood. Sometimes children are tired, sometimes they had a fight with their friends, but when they come to class in a bad mood it's hard to teach. Our time together is so limited, so it's hard to get things done if kids are having a hard time. I do my best to make class fun for them but sometimes, it can be hard for both of us. Thankfully, this is a rare situation.

The most challenging part of petsitting is when we have pets that don't get along. We have to get creative with where the pets stay, sometimes in a separate office or room from the other animals. I think staying with us can be depressing to some pets because they feel they have been abandoned by their owners. Since they feel this way they can lash out at other animals. I try to understand their emotions and help them feel loved, but sometimes they just need time on their own to calm themselves down.

8. 일을 하면서 힘든 점은 무엇인가요?

펜션을 운영할 때 가장 어려운 점은 쉬는 날이 없다는 것입니다. 언제 손님이 필요할지 모르기 때문에 휴가를 가거나 친구를 만나거나 외식을 하기도 어렵습니다. 펜션이 바쁘지 않으면 오전에 여유 시간이 있지만, 친구를 만나거나 하루 종일 혼자서 휴식을 취하기는 어렵습니다.

과외에서 가장 어려운 부분은 아마도 학생들의 기분이 좋지 않을 때 가르치는 것입니다. 아이들이 피곤하거나 친구들과 싸웠을 때도 있지만 기분이 좋지 않은 상태에서 수업에 오면 가르치기가 어렵습니다. 함께 하는 시간이 한정되어 있기 때문에 아이들이 힘들어하면 수업이 제대로 진행되기 어렵죠. 아이들이 즐겁게 수업할 수 있도록 최선을 다하지만 가끔은 서로가 힘들 때가 있어요. 다행히도 이런 상황은 드물어요.

펫시팅에서 가장 어려운 부분은 서로 잘 어울리지 않는 반려동물이 있을 때입니다. 때로는 다른 동물과 별도의 사무실이나 방에서 반려동물이 지낼 수 있도록 창의력을 발휘해야 하죠. 일부 반려동물은 주인에게 버림받았다고 생각하기 때문에 우리와 함께 지내는 것이 우울할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 이런 감정을 느끼면 다른 동물에게 화를 내기도 하죠. 저는 그들의 감정을 이해하고 사랑받고 있다고 느끼도록 도와주려고 노력하지만, 때로는 혼자만의 시간이 필요할 때도 있어요.

9. If you met your past self, who is about to start doing what you are doing now, what would you tell them?

I would say 'trust yourself, trust your husband, and don't worry so much. You will find a way.'

9. 지금 하고 있는 일을 시작하려는 과거의 나를 만난다면 전해주고 싶은 말이 있을까요?

“자신을 믿고, 남편을 믿고, 너무 걱정하지 마” 

“넌 방법을 찾을거야.”

10. What is special about doing what you do now in Jeju?

Of course, pensions are a big business in Jeju. I love to recommend beautiful places for guests to visit like Panpo Port (판포포구) close to our pension. Last week the Olle Walking Festival passed our pension. It was a wonderful event! Close to our pension is a bar called Yoittangpipi that has concerts and the musicians often stay with us, which is always very interesting. Some many amazing things happen on our little island!

For tutoring, I guess the most unique Jeju thing is that I teach mostly students from the 4 international schools on the island. Not many other places have so many international schools in the area.

I love taking our doggie friends on walks around the island while they stay with us. Our favorite walking places include: Hyeopjae Beach, Panpo Port, Shinchang Coastal Road, Suwolbong, and Olle Course 13. I love experiencing Jeju's natural beauty with them!

10. 제주에서 지금의 일을 한다는 건 어떤 특별한 점이 있을까요?

물론 제주에서 펜션은 큰 사업입니다. 저희 펜션과 가까운 판포항 같은 아름다운 곳을 손님들에게 추천해드리고 싶어요. 지난주에 올레 걷기 축제가 저희 펜션을 지나갔어요. 정말 멋진 행사였어요! 저희 펜션 근처에는 요이땅삐삐라는 바가 있는데 콘서트가 열리고 뮤지션들이 종종 저희와 함께 머물러서 항상 매우 흥미롭습니다. 이 작은 섬에서 정말 많은 놀라운 일들이 일어나고 있어요!

과외의 경우, 제주의 가장 독특한 점은 섬에 있는 4개의 국제학교 학생들을 주로 가르친다는 점입니다. 다른 지역에는 이렇게 많은 국제학교가 있는 곳이 많지 않거든요.

저는 강아지 친구들을 데리고 섬 곳곳을 산책하는 것을 좋아합니다. 저희가 가장 좋아하는 산책 장소는 다음과 같습니다: 협재해수욕장, 판포항, 신창 해안도로, 수월봉, 올레 13코스 등입니다. 강아지들과 함께 제주의 아름다운 자연을 경험하는 것이 정말 좋아요!
