9살 아이들이 들려주는, 지금 행복해지는 19편의 동시

가슴이 뜁니다

초등학교 2학년, 9살 아이들과 함께 만든 공저 시집이 드디어 세상에 나왔습니다.

아이들의 손때 묻은 시와 그림이 담긴 책이라
몇 번이고 넘겨보고 또 넘겨보았습니다.

되도록 아이들이 직접 쓰고 그린 작품을 훼손하지 않는 선에서,
있는 그대로의 감성과 언어를 시집에 담아내고 싶었습니다.

책을 만드는 일

본격적으로 북디자이너님과 작업을 시작한 건 11월이었습니다.
약 한 달여 동안 시집의 분위기를 잡아가며,
아이들의 시와 그림에 어울리는 색감과 구성, 레이아웃을 함께 고민했습니다.

처음 인연을 맺었던 디자이너님은
학교 예산이 넉넉하지 않다는 상황을 헤아려 주셨고,
기본 시세를 훨씬 웃도는 품질로 세심하게 작업해 주셨습니다.

정성껏 책을 함께 완성해주신 디자이너님께 다시 한 번 진심으로 감사드립니다.

아이들과 함께한 창작의 여정

19명의 초등학교 저학년 아이들과 함께 책을 만드는 일은 결코 간단하지 않았습니다.
아이 한 명, 한 명의 개성이 담긴 시와 그림을 조심스럽게 모아 엮고,
그 감정과 표현을 손상하지 않도록 살려내는 작업이 필요했습니다.

특히 시를 쓰는 과정에서 아이들로부터
“모르겠어요.”, “못 하겠어요.”라는 말을 자주 들었습니다.

자신의 시와 그림을 책에 담고 싶지만,
막상 무엇을 어떻게 써야 할지 몰라 막막한 마음.
그 마음이 낯설지 않았습니다.
저 역시도 종종 느끼는 감정이었기 때문입니다.

그래서 더 많이 보여주고, 들려주려고 했습니다.
사랑받는 시들을 함께 읽으며 좋은 재료들을 아이들 마음에 심어주다 보니,
조금씩 그 마음과 생각이 열렸습니다.

그리고 마침내, 아이들 스스로 자신만의 글을 써내려가기 시작했습니다.

참 다행스러운 순간들이었습니다.

기획의 손길

아이들의 시와 그림이 완성된 후에는
그 작품들을 하나의 흐름으로 엮어줄 책 제목, 부제, 목차 구성이 필요했습니다.

19명의 시와 그림이 각각 흩어지지 않고
자연스럽게 한 권의 책으로 읽히기를 바랐고,
단지 우리 반만의 문집이 아니라
누구에게나 선물 같은 책이 되기를 바랐습니다.

My Heart Beats Fast

A poetry book co-authored with 9-year-old second graders has finally come into the world. Because it holds the fingerprints of the children—their poems and drawings—I found myself turning its pages over and over again. I tried my best not to alter their work too much. I wanted to preserve the raw emotion and language, just as they had expressed it.

The Process of Making a Book

I officially began working with a book designer in November. Over the course of about a month, we shaped the tone and feel of the book—selecting colors, layouts, and a structure that would harmonize with the children’s poems and illustrations. The designer, whom I first met online, was incredibly understanding of our limited school budget and still offered us work that far exceeded expectations in both quality and care. I’m deeply grateful for the thoughtfulness and professionalism brought to this book.

A Journey of Creation with Children

Creating a book with 19 young elementary students was by no means easy. Each child had their own voice and artistic style, and we wanted to reflect that without losing the heart of their expressions. Especially in the early stages, I often heard them say, "I don't know what to write." or "I can't do this." They wanted to be part of the book, but didn’t always know how to shape their thoughts into words or images. That hesitation wasn’t unfamiliar to me. I’ve felt it many times myself. So I tried to show them more, to let them hear more. I shared poems that are loved by many, hoping the inspiration would take root. And slowly, I saw their minds open and their thoughts take shape. Eventually, they began to write on their own. It was such a fortunate and beautiful transformation to witness.

The Touch of Planning

Once all the poems and drawings were complete, we needed a structure to tie them together—a title, a subtitle, and a table of contents that would give the book flow and coherence. I hoped the 19 unique voices wouldn’t scatter but instead gather naturally into a single, meaningful book. More than just a classroom keepsake, we wanted this to be a gift anyone could open and smile.

Even the chapter titles hint at it, don’t they? This poetry collection, "Happiness Comes Like This," carries the endearing yet profound thoughts of 9-year-old children—tender reflections on life from small but wise hearts.

All Proceeds Will Be Donated

All profits from this book will be donated to a child protection organization. We hope this first creative work of our students will extend a warm hand to other children as well.
