As Tesla CEO Musk reported on the Pentagon's plan to access Chinese intelligence, President Trump attacked the NYT for reporting on it.

“If a foreign country were to learn how the U.S. would wage war against them, it could strengthen its defenses and shore up its weaknesses, making the plan much less likely to succeed,” the Times said. “The top-secret briefings on China war plans include about 20 to 30 slides that describe how the U.S. would respond to such a conflict.” According to an anonymous source familiar with the Chinese war plan, “the plan will start with signs and warnings of a Chinese threat and then lay out a range of options for what targets China might strike and over what timeframe, and then present those options to the president for him to decide.”

The Times said that Musk’s wide-ranging work across the federal bureaucracy and continued operations as a major government contractor would sharply reduce questions about his conflict of interest, adding that “Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, is a major supplier to the Pentagon and has extensive financial interests in China.”

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell did not initially respond to an emailed request for comment from the Times asking why Musk should be briefed on China’s war plans. Shortly after the New York Times published the article on the evening of the 20th, Spokesperson Parnell issued a short statement saying, "The Department of Defense is pleased to welcome Elon Musk to the Pentagon on the 21st.
