임페리얼 컬리지 런던 인터뷰 메일
어제저녁 모임의 여파로, 머리가 아프고 어지러워 잠은 일찍 깼지만 일어나지 못하고 침대에 시체처럼 누워있었다. 눈을 감고 잠을 더 청해 보지만 머리가 더 아플 뿐 잠은 오지 않아, 결국 말똥말똥 눈을 뜨고 내가 소화할 수 있는 알코올양을 오버해서 마신 것에 대해 반성하고 있는데 딸아이가 벌꺽 문을 열고 방으로 들어왔다. 술 먹고 컨디션이 안 좋은 상태를 티 내기 부끄럽고 미안해서, 금방 깬 척 잘 잤나고 아이를 맞이하는데 침대에 털썩 앉으며 던진 아이의 말 한마디에 천근만근 술에 찌든 몸뚱이가 뿡 떠서 하늘로 날아갈 번 했다.
"엄마, 임페리얼에서 인터뷰메일 왔어."
"캭~~~ 정말? 그럴 줄 알았어. 고생했어, 우리 딸~~ 너무 기쁘다. 야호!!!"
잠이 번쩍 깨고 아픈 머리는 씻은 듯이 달아나고 어린아이처럼 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰고 싶은 기분이었다. 아이를 꼭 안으며 행복에 겨운 기쁨을 마음껏 표현했다. 너무나 힘들고 고생한 그 많은 날들을 한방에 보상받는 느낌이었다.
작년 임페리얼에 안타깝게 떨어진 뒤 합격된 Bristol도 포기하고 다시 한번 해본다고 했을 때 시간, 노력, 돈 같은 건 문제가 되지 않았었다. 본인이 하고 싶은 것을 찾고 그것을 이루기 위해 다시 한번 최선을 다해 노력해 보겠다는 그런 마음을 갖는 것 자체가 가상하고 기특했다. 하지만 한 가지 걱정되는 건 NMSC 교장선생님이 다시 한번 지원하는 건 괜찮지만 좋은 학교에서는 Resit 하는 아이들을 잘 고려하지 않는다고 하여 가능성도 없는 도전을 해서 노력을 해도 안되나 보다 하고 자신감을 잃어버리고 다시 뭔가에 도전하는 걸 두려워하게 되면 어쩌지 하는 것이었다.
괜히 고생하는 건 아닌지, 되지도 않은 헛물켜는 건 아닌지. 지난번에는 12월에 인터뷰를 했는데 이번에는 1월의 반이 지나가도 인터뷰메일이 오지 않고 진짜 Resit 하는 아이들은 탈락시키는 건가 내심 조마조마하고 있었던 터였다. 하지만 이번에도 Manchester와 Bath에서 오퍼가 왔고 대학은 갈 수 있으니 괜찮다고 위안을 하고 있는 와중에 찾아온 반가운 메일. 희망을 가지고 꾸준히 노력하고 있으면 기회는 온다는 사실이 너무 감사했다.
1월 24일 3시에 인터뷰를 하기로 하였다. 지난번에 인터뷰를 한번 해봤고 또 통과해서 오퍼를 받았으니 이번에도 잘할 수 있을 거라는 믿음을 가져본다. 너무 긴장하지 않고 제 실력을 잘 발휘기만 하면 이번에도 오퍼를 받을 거다. 한발 한발 나아가자. 우리 딸 파이팅!

Pre-interview exercise
Before your interview, there will be a pre-interview exercise. This is not a test; rather, it shall provide you with an opportunity to think through some of the interview questions without the pressure of the interviewer in your presence. You will not be marked on any notes that you make during the pre-interview exercise; they are for your reference during the interview. You will be given full details on the day and no advance preparation is required. Please expect an email from us approximately 15 minutes prior to your interview.
Interview format
Your interview will take place online via Microsoft Teams. Once your interview timeslot has been confirmed, we will arrange to send you an invitation that includes a link you can use to join the interview at the appropriate time.
The interview will be with a member of academic staff from the programme and will last approximately 25 minutes. During your interview you will be asked some general questions about your motivations and experiences, plus some competence-based questions relating to the MEng in Design Engineering programme. You do not need to do any specific revision or research for these questions, they are all based on knowledge that you will have encountered in your academic career to date.
Note: a new member of staff or a member of our student recruitment team may audit your interview to observe the academic staff member conducting the interview. They will not be assessing you and their presence will have no bearing on the outcome of your interview.
Portfolios/example work
Where possible, you are encouraged to present examples of work during the interview. This could be e.g. a series of sketches in fairly crude form. We want to see your process, thus the medium need not be super-polished or the work resolved. This is not compulsory, so if you don’t have a portfolio, don't worry.
Only two minutes will be allotted to this, so careful selection is advised. When considering the work to present, we would suggest you carefully consider how the work adapts to the online medium and select accordingly.
