소원을 빌어봐
시각 예술가의 대만 타이베이에서의, 70일
"Lizzy, 한국 동전 있어? 있다면, 이 종이에 네가 원하는 소원을 쓰고 동전을 테이프로 붙여 내 마법 상자에 넣어줄래? 이건 내가 좋아하는 작가들에게 요청하는, 나만의 프로젝트야"
2023년 봄, 대만 MoCA Taipei Museum과 예술 교육가로 협업을 하게 되면서 시작된 대만과 나의 인연은, 감사하게도 2024년 그리고 2025년에도 여전히 다정하고 단단히 연결되어 간다.

지난해, 국제레지던시연합인 Res Artis(RA)의 대만 타이베이 콘퍼런스에 예술가로 초청받아 퍼실레이터로 워크숍을 맡게 되었다.

주최 측의 도움을 받으며 컨퍼런스를 하게 될 공간들을 투어 하다 보니 32도가 넘는 쨍쨍한 햇빛에 우린 모두 지쳐버렸다. 강렬한 태양을 피해 에어컨 주변으로 모여든 우리들은 한국어와 영어, 중국어를 섞어가며 계속해서 이야기를 이어나갔다. 나이도, 언어도 다르지만 우리는 각자의 작업에 대해 진심으로 설명하고 또 경청했다. 그렇게, 이야기를 이어가던 중 디렉터님이 갑자기, 보물섬에서나 발견될 것 같은 상자를 어디선가 챙겨 와 우리에게 보여줬다. 그리고 이 상자에 대한 스토리텔링을 이어가며 우리에게 작은 카드를 한 장씩 내밀며, "Lizzy, 한국 동전 있어? 있다면, 이 종이에 네가 원하는 소원을 쓰고 동전을 테이프로 붙여 내 마법 상자에 넣어줄래? 이건 내가 좋아하는 작가들에게 요청하는, 나만의 프로젝트야"
나는 흔쾌히 메모를 남겼다. 하나의 문제라면, 평소 현금 없이 다니던 나에게 한국도 아닌 대만, 타이베이에서 동전이라니.. 자신 없는 목소리로, "꼭 우리나라 동전을 붙여야만 해? 나 한국 동전 없을 것 같은데"라고 말하며 지갑을 탈탈 털어댔다. 그런 나를 바라보며 두 사람은 깔깔깔 웃으며, "만약 네가 없다면 내가 한국 동전 갖고 있을지도 모르겠어, 빌려줄게." 라며 나를 다독였다. 그때, 지갑의 틈새에서 발견한 100원!
"동전 찾았다 !!!"
그렇게, 나는 THAV(Treasure Hill Artist Village)의 디렉터의 보물 상자에 소원 카드를 넣은 최초의 예술가가 되었다. 영어와 한국어로 작성된 카드 속 나의 소원은 언젠가 이곳에서 예술가로 작업을 할 수 있기를 바란다는 것이었다. RA 컨퍼런스를 끝내고, 다시 디렉터를 만났을 때 그는 씩 웃으며 내게 말했다. "리지, 너 1년 중 언제가 가장 한가해? 언제든 네가 다시 오고 싶은 기간을 알려주면, 내가 초청장을 보내줄게. 우린 이미 좋은 친구잖아. 네가 이곳으로 오기 위해 필요한 것들이 있다면, 어려워하지 말고 모두 말해줘."
그렇게, 감사하게도 디렉터의 초청을 받아 2025년 2월 10일부터 4월 10일까지 Treasure Hill Artist Village에 머물며 시각 예술작업을 진행할 수 있게 되었다.
"Lizzy, do you have a Korean coin? If you do, please write a wish on this paper, tape the coin to it, and put it in my magic box. This is my personal project, which I ask my favorite artists to participate in."
In the spring of 2023, my connection with Taiwan began when I collaborated with MoCA Taipei Museum as an art educator. Thankfully, this bond has remained strong and warm in 2024 and will continue in 2025. Last year, I was invited as an artist to the Res Artis (RA) Taipei Conference in Taiwan and had the opportunity to lead a workshop as a facilitator.

While touring the conference spaces with the organizers, we all became exhausted under the strong 32°C sun. To escape the heat, we gathered near the air conditioner, continuing our conversations in Korean, English, and Chinese. Although we had different ages and languages, we sincerely shared our work and listened to each other. During our discussion, the director suddenly brought out a treasure-box-like container and shared a story about it. Then, handing each of us a small card, the director asked, "Lizzy, do you have a Korean coin? If you do, please write a wish on this paper, tape the coin to it, and put it in my magic box. This is my personal project, which I ask my favorite artists to participate in."
I happily wrote my wish. The only problem was that I never carried cash, and finding a Korean coin in Taipei seemed impossible. Hesitantly, I said, "Does it have to be a Korean coin? I don’t think I have one." I emptied my wallet, feeling uncertain. The two people next to me laughed and reassured me, "If you don’t have one, maybe I do. I can lend it to you."
Just then, I found a 100-won coin in my wallet!
"I found a coin!!!"
So, I became the first artist to place a wish card in the director’s treasure box at THAV (Treasure Hill Artist Village). In English and Korean, I wrote my wish: that one day, I could work as an artist at THAV. After the RA conference, when I met the director again, he smiled and asked, "Lizzy, when are you most free in a year? Let me know whenever you want to come back, and I’ll send you an invitation. We are already good friends. If you need anything to come here, don’t hesitate to ask."
Thanks to his invitation, I will stay at Treasure Hill Artist Village from February 10 to April 10, 2025, to work on my visual art project.
