검은 안개가 걷히듯 허생의 의식이 서서히 돌아왔다. 손끝에서 느껴지는 차가운 플라스틱 감촉. 눈을 뜨자 낯선 천장 대신 낡은 강의실 책상이 보였다.

"허생 학생, 이론만으로는 부족해요. 양자역학은 관찰의 문제가 아니라..."

박진우 교수의 목소리가 마치 10년 전 테이프를 돌려듣는 것처럼 울렸다.

진동 소리에 허생이 주머니에서 스마트폰을 꺼냈다. 화면에 뜬 날짜가 눈을 찌르듯 선명했다. 2023년 9월 15일. 자신이 QUBIT 프로토콜을 가동한 지 정확히 1년 전이었다. 손목을 보니 새하얀 피부에 주사 바늘 자국 하나 없었다.

'과거로... 돌아왔다고?'

"선생님, 양자 역행성 망각 현상입니다."

귓속에서 아테나의 목소리가 스쳤다. 허생이 급히 노트북을 열자 QUBIT 프로토콜 로그 창이 스스로 실행되고 있었다.

[시간축 오류: 관찰자 신경조작 펄스 역류]라는 경고문 아래, 크로노스社 로고가 피처럼 번지고 있었다.

강의실 문이 열리며 김유라가 뛰어들어왔다. 그런데 그녀의 가슴에 달린 국정원 ID 카드가 아니라 '물리학과 학회장' 배지가 흔들리고 있었다.

"허생 , 교수님이 찾아. '양자 현실 조작' 실험 자료를..."

그녀의 말이 끝나기 전에 허생의 스마트워치가 삐삐 울렸다. 미확인 번호에서 문자가 도착했다.

허생의 등에 식은땀이 흘렀다. 이 시간대의 강철민은 아직 동료였고, 함께 크로노스社의 전신인 '퀀텀솔루션즈'에서 인턴을 하던 때였다. 노트북을 닫으며 일어서는 허생의 손가락이 떨렸다.

'내가 과거를 바꾼 건가? 아니, 과거가 원래 이랬던가?'

지하실 계단을 내려가자 녹슨 철문 너머로 낮은 대화소리가 들려왔다. "양자 키 분배 시스템을 이렇게 조작하다니... 이건 배신이야, 철민아." 허생이 문틈으로 들여다보니 백발의 과학자가 강철민에게 총구를 겨누고 있었다. 그 과학자의 가운데 흰색 코트에 새겨진 크로노스社 마크가 눈에 들어왔다.

굉음과 함께 허생의 몸이 앞으로 날아갔다. 누군가 그를 밀친 것이다. 바닥을 구르며 돌아본 허생은 김유라가 자신을 대신해 총알을 맞고 쓰러지는 모습을 보았다. "네... 노트북..." 그녀의 손가락이 허생의 가방을 향해 뻗어졌다.

"아테나! 지금 당장 프로토콜 재가동해!" 허생이 고함치며 노트북을 펼쳤다. 화면에 나타난 아테나의 홀로그램이 평소보다 흐릿했다. "현재 시공간 불안정성 92%. 강제 실행 시 관찰자 패러독스가..."

주변 공기가 진동하기 시작했다. 쓰러진 김유라의 상처에서 피가 거꾸로 흘러들어갔다. 총알이 허공에서 녹아내리며 백발 과학자의 권총으로 돌아가는 순간, 허생의 눈앞에 두 개의 선택지가 떠올랐다.

"관찰자의 함정에 걸린 거야, 친구."
