"Somewhere in Time (1980)"

In my childhood, mobile phones were pretty much for adults only, and kids actually had to go out and meet up or find a public phone to call and meet others. Music was either on tape or CD. Buying those shiny CDs and chrome tapes for recording was a thrilling experience. I miss that era. Life was so much easier, people were much nicer, and films were so heartfelt. As Wayne Wang (director of "The Joy Luck Club" & "Coming Home Again") said at the TIFF 2019, movies are supposed to be slow, but recent movies push you so much, and they push you to think a certain way. So I am desperate to find movies that I can breathe while watching, I want to watch movies that breathe, and I wish to think about my own life, and what happens with my own life rather than movies manipulating me how to think.
So, in that sense, "Somewhere in Time (1980)" is a rare finding. It is a story of a playwright in the late 1970s who one day faces an old lady at his celebration party as playwright giving him an old watch and telling him, "Come back to me." Day or weeks later he encounters a photograph of a young woman from 1912, and from that point on, he is on a journey to find this young woman on the photograph, who happens to be the old lady that gave him the watch. a story of time-travelling, although absurd and ridiculous it seems, makes you feel pain somewhere deep in your heart, and I am thankful for my google-searching hobby that I found this rare cult classic.
Christopher Reeve (The Superman) was the main cast alongside Jane Seymour, and he said in an interview in the early 1980s that his favorite role ever as an actor was Richard in this film (surprisingly not the role in Superman franchise). During the research of my own, I also came to learn that his passion was in plays and on stages not in films. I believe that his passion was (still is) overshadowed by the popularity of the Superman franchise, but we should remember that he went to Princeton University and Cornell University for stage acting and playwrite, and movies were rather an accidental encounter for him. For this reason we can taste a sense of stage acting in his films.
On a personal note, Jane Seymour was my crush back in my teenage years alongside Cybill Shepherd.
세계적으로 유명했던 Joy Luck Club 이란 책과 이창래 교수님이 쓴 단편소설 Coming Home Again을 감독하신 명감독 Wayne Wang 님이 이런 말을 했습니다: "영화는 원래 느려야 합니다. 하지만 요즘 영화들은 관객들을 너무 속도로 몰아세워서 관객들이 어떤 특정한 방식으로 생각하도록 강요합니다. 그렇기에 저는 보면서 숨을 쉴 수 있는 영화를 간절히 찾고 있고, 영화가 강제로 내가 어떻게 생각하도록 조종하고 통제하는 것이 아닌, 영화를 보면서 내 삶에 대해 내가 생각해 볼 수 있으면 합니다."
