Punctuation Marks #5: Colons
Colons (콜론) 에 대한 일반적인 rule 들은 아래와 같습니다:
A colon is a mark of anticipation. It serves as an introduction and alerts you to a close connection between what comes before and after it (콜론은 일종의 예측 또는 이어짐을 알려주는 부호로, 문장의 끝에 위치하며 그 문장 다음에 주로 예 또는 추가정보를 나열하기 위해 사용된다).
콜론은 매우 매우 매우 중요하고 쓸모가 아주 아주 아주 많습니다. 형제로는 쎄미콜론이 있지요? 둘이 비슷하면서도 용도는 사뭇 다릅니다. 우선 콜론에 대해 하나씩 들여다 볼까요?
1) Use a colon where you want to link two sentences without disrupting them (두 문장의 흐름을 끊지 않고 연결/지속하고 싶을 때 사용)
- I would like to show you the room: of course, you will like it a lot.
이렇게 하면 두 문장의 연결성이 강해지고, 새로 문장을 만들 필요도 없고, 간략하게도 구성 할 수 있습니다.
2) Use a colon to list examples (문장 또는 구, 절을 예제로 나열할 때 사용)
- This model comes with four features: a manual, an automatic, and a semi-automatic.
이렇게 하면 새로 문장을 만들 필요도 없고, 문법도 피해갈 수 있을 수 있으며, 간략하게도 만들 수 있습니다.
3) Use a colon after in introduction that includes or implies "the following" or "as follows" (the following 과 as follows 를 동반한 요점정리식 문단을 만드는 데 사용한다).
이 방법은 전에 알려드렸지만 다시 설명합니다. 예를 들어 이런 문장이 있다고 합시다
During the visit, we are hoping to meet the mayor. Also as we meet the mayor, we would like to express our views. If possible, we will submit our petition as well.
이렇게 잘 쓸 수 있다면야 영어공부가 필요없겠지만, 그게 아니라 이 고생을 하는 것이지요 (darn it). 자, 이 문장을 “colon” and “the-following” 콤비네이션으로 해서 요약합니다:
We hope to do the following during the visit:
- meet the mayor
- express our views
- submit our petition
이렇게 해 놓으면 보기도 쉽고, 쓰기도 편하고, 메세지 전달에도 효과적입니다. 아, 문장이 원래 있었으니 이게 가능한거다라는 분 계시리라 생각합니다. 그래서 아래 방식을 또 준비했습니다.
우선 머릿속에 있는 하고 싶은 말들 중 (1) 동사들을 추려낸다
meet, express, submit
그 다음 각 동사에 해당하는 주제를 넣는다
meet the mayor, express our views, submit our petition
그 다음 이 미완성 구/절을 세로로 나열한다
meet the mayor,
express our views,
submit our petition
그 다음 각 the following 과 콜론을 그 위에 위치시킨다
the following:
meet the mayor,
express our views,
submit our petition
그 다음 각 the following 과 콜론이 속한 줄에 적절한 주어 및 동사를 넣어 문장화시킨다
We hope the following:
meet the mayor,
express our views,
submit our petition
그 다음 살을 더 붙여서 조금 더 멋지게 만든다
We hope the following during the visit:
meet the mayor,
express our views,
submit our petition
간단하지요? 자 그럼 이번에는 위와 동일한 문장 (아래 다시 표시)을 “colon” and “as-follows” 콤비네이션을 사용해서 만들어볼까요?
During the visit, we are hoping to meet the mayor. Also as we meet the mayor, we would like to express our views. If possible, we will submit our petition as well.
The list of our hopes during the visit is as follows:
- meet the mayor
- express our views, and
- submit our petition
위 방법은 더 쉽습니다. 위에 언더라인한 부분만 매 번 상황에 맞게 바꾸면 되니까요.
4) Use a colon to introduce a long quotation (인영할 때 사용한다)
According to Mr. Cambridge: “I believe that your vision is…”
5) l Use a colon to separate hours and minutes (시 & 분을 나타낼 때 사용한다)
It is 5:30 p.m.
시간을 표시할 경우 제발 제발 PM 과 AM 이 시간 앞으로 나오게 위치하지 마세요.
