Punctuation Marks #7: Dashes

Dashes (대쉬) 에 대한 일반적인 rule 들은 아래와 같습니다:

Dashes (often considered strong parentheses) are vigorous and versatile, and have several uses. They can stand alone or be used in pairs. Just don’t overdo dashes or they lose their impact (강한 괄호로도 불려지는 대쉬는 용도가 다양하다. 짝으로 쓸 수도 있고 하나만 사용해도 됨. 너무 많이 사용하지만 않으면 꽤 슬모있는 부호).

1) Use dashes to set off expressions you want to emphasize (문장 내 강조하고 싶은 부분을 따로 분리하는 데 사용).

This brand of software – as unbiased tests have disclosed – is more powerful than what you are currently using.

2) Use a dash to indicate a strong afterthought that disrupts the sentence (일반적인 흐름을 끊고 강조해서 말하고자 하는 표현을 삽입하는 데 사용함).

아래가 일반적인 문장이라면

- I know you are looking for a list of qualified people, and I hope this helps.

이 version 은 자신의 말을 강조하는 부분을 중간에 삽입하여 주목을 끌게 함

- I know you are looking for - and I hope this helps - a list of qualified people.
