영국에 살면서 맞닥뜨릴 수 있는 다양한 글쓰기, 읽기 상황을 꾸며봤습니다. 실제 경험한 일도 있고 주변 사람이 겪은 일, 방송이나 영화에서 본 내용을 바탕으로 쓴 글도 있습니다. 제가 직접 작성한 글이니 영어가 어색하더라도 이해해 주세요.

위 글은, 담장에다 페인트칠을 하라는 벌이 내려지자 이를 두고 고민하던 톰이 인간 심리를 교묘하게 이용하여 위기를 모면하는 광경입니다. 간혹 책 표지에도 나오는 장면이죠.
고아가 된 조카를 키워주는 폴리 이모, 분발해야 할 것 같네요. 톰이 장난만 심한 정도가 아니라 이렇게 꾀를 부리느라 이모 마음고생이 갈수록 심해지니까요.
토요일 아침, 당장 친구들이랑 신나게 놀러 다녀야 할 판국에 페인트칠이라니 기가 막힌 일이죠. 그런데, 이를 억지로 하는 일이 아닌 신나서 하는 놀이처럼 흉내를 냈더니 당장 동생부터 주변 친구까지 해보겠노라 끼어듭니다. 단순한 호기심에서 일을 거드는 정도가 아니라 자기도 시켜달라 사정하며 뇌물까지 줄 정도입니다.
인간은 동일한 상황에서 일이라 생각하면 마지못해 하지만, 놀이라 생각하면 아무리 고된 작업이라도 신이 나서 참여한다는 의미겠죠.
