HTMMA의 Intersession
이제 절기상으로 완전한 봄이네요.
아이들이 이 아름다운 계절을 제대로 즐기지 못하고 놓칠새라 두려웠는지
다음주부터는 2주간의 봄방학에 들어갑니다.
다시 말해 이번 주가 봄방학 전 주 인거죠.
2주 휴가가 있으니 아이들 마음은 콩밭에 가 있을 수 밖에 없는 한 주 인데요, High Tech Middle, Media Arts에서는 이 시간을 아이들이 미래의 직업을 경험해 보도록 하는 프로그램을 매 년 준비합니다.
이름하여 Intersession!
이 프로그램은 선생님들이 가르치는 과목과 상관없이 준비하시고 진행하세요. 학생들도 자유롭게 자신들이 참여하고 싶은 수업을 하나 선택하면 됩니다.
12월, 겨울방학이 시작되기 전 주쯤 메일로 HTMMA Intersession Catalog 2018을 학교에서 보냅니다. 개별 프로그램을 진행하는 선생님들은 카탈로그에 간단한 설명, 기대하는 목적 및 학술적인 사항, 현장 학습 계획을 함께 첨부해야 합니다.
자, 그럼 올 해는 어떤 프로그램들이 있는지 함께 간단하게 살펴볼까요. 여러분이라면 어떤 프로그램을 고르시겠나요?
San Diego Staycation
Description: Personal backgrounds and experiences inform the work that we make. In this Intersession we will explore our personal backgrounds, study the landmarks and hear from experts. For the 5 day course, we will go into a different neighborhood in San Diego, listen to speakers and have a meal in that neighborhood.
우리가 하는 일들은 개인적인 백그라운드와 경험이 바탕이 됩니다. 이 인터세션에서 우리는 우리의 개별적인 배경을 탐구하고, 주요 장소를 연구하고, 전문가들에게 의견을 듣게 될 것입니다. 5 일 코스의 경우 샌디에고의 여러 곳의 주변 지역에서 강의를 듣고, 그 부근에서 식사를 할 것입니다.
Joshua Tree & Art!
Students will travel to Joshua Tree National Park and camp for 3 nights. While there, students focus on the incredible natural scenery and capturing it through photography. When we return, students will select their favorite photo and recreate it using their favorite method of art. Immerse in nature and come out with art!
Camping Monday, March 19 -Thursday, March 22: We will be departing school Monday, March 19 and heading to Joshua Tree National Park for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. We will return to school Thursday, March 22.
학생들은 Joshua Tree 국립공원에서 3박 4일동안 캠핑을 하며 그곳의 장엄한 자연경관을 Ansel Adams와 Eliot Porter 스타일로 사진기에 담아 올 것입니다. 학교로 복귀한 후 그 중 가장 마음에 드는 사진을 가장 선호하는 예술 방식으로 인화할 것입니다.
이 수업을 통해 학생들은 Ansel Adams와 Eliot Porter 스타일로 사진 찍기, 통찰력있는 기사 쓰기, 조슈아 나무 국립 공원의 식생, 별보기/캠핑/하이킹의 기본에 대해 배우게 될 것입니다.

We are food bloggers of San Diego. We will explore the different demographics of San Diego to taste some of the many food options. In addition, we will blog and offer our specialized reviews via social media about our enthusiastic tastings and experiences.

Description: We will learn to throw down in the kitchen and impress our friends and family with our culinary skills. 우리는 부엌에서 음식 솜씨로 친구들과 가족들을 감동시키는 방법을 배울 것입니다. 불도 쓰고, 칼 쓰는 법, 요리의 기본(데치기, 프라잉, 볶기 등)을 배우고, “Eat This, Not That”이라는 요리 챌린지를 통해 건강하고 맛있는 음식을 고안해볼 것입니다. 더불어 음식을 통해 여러 나라와 문화들도 배웁니다.

Bikes, Breezes, and Beaches! We will ride bikes to other places in San Diego.

Dramarama
Students will tour various theaters throughout San Diego, as well as play theater games, watch clips/scenes from famous musicals, with possible sing-a-longs. 샌디에고의 극장 및 관련 투어 프로그램! La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe (behind the scenes tour), Show/Tour with CCT/CYT에 방문하여 투어에 참여합니다. 더불어 HTMMA의 Jr. Theater workshop도 참여하며, 씨월드에서 공연하는 분을 게스트로 모시고 세미나를 진행합니다. 연극에서 실제 사용되는 신체 운동, 보컬, 인지 운동을 배웁니다.
Project Dive!
We will build ROVs to navigate an underwater obstacle course.
In this intersession students will design an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that can navigate an underwater obstacle course. We will first build a kit robot and then work to modify the body, mechanisms, and electronics to make our ROV’s more maneuverable and faster.
Right now I am working to have at least one guest speaker from an underwater robotics company come and speak to us. We might also take a trip to an underwater robotics facility. I am also working on a field trip to a location for the final challenge. This will be a facility that has a pool or large tank for us to race the ROV’s in.
해저를 탐험하는 ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle)를 디자인하고, 로봇 키트로 로봇은 만든 후, 더 기동력있고 더 빠르게 움직일 수 있도록 본체의 바디와 메카니즘, 전자 장치를 수정하게 됩니다. 해저 로보틱스 회사에서 근무하는 분을 최소 한 분 이상 초청하여 현장 학습과 투어도 참여합니다.
High Tech Middle Mini Arcade
We will use raspberry pi’s, computer components, arcade parts, and laser cutters to build and paint 4 arcade machines.
Course Objectives/Academic Content: In this making project, students will learn about computers and software through the process of building arcade machines. We will also cover the history of arcade machines.

Students will explore graffiti as an art form with a focus on “Reverse Graffiti”; using prepared stencils and a pressure washer to create “Clean Graffiti”. Explore the history of graffiti and form opinions on the question, “what is art?”. (City sponsored graffiti “walls”)

Being for the Benefit of Mr. Matt’s Vanilla Fudge Brain and the Strawberry Snapchat Underground, or Music
Hi-fi relaxation, low-fi stakes. Students will explore several modern genres of music during the intersession week. We will listen to and discuss music and lyrics, talk about music’s meaning in our lives; learn some basic music theory; go record-shopping and play our vinyl; and create original-ish music. Students will produce their own playlists for studying, exercise, enjoyment, sharing, and educating others.
Describing music: pitch, melody, rhythm, harmony, syncopation
What makes a genre of music distinct? blues, jazz, rock ’n’ roll, “pop”, electro-synth, obscure genres
Music, society, and history: musical theft and borrowing; music in peace and protest movements; punk and New Wave; Beyonce

Mindful YOU
Description: Do you find yourself feeling a little extra anxious and wound tight these days? Are you feeling like the world has you down? That’s no way to live! Join us in learning powerful ways to handle stress and anxiety through movement and mindfulness practices. Students will explore what it means to live fully and in the moment. We will be visiting the Self Realization Fellowship, Happy-U Namaste Yoga Studio, and the Buddhist Temple in Escondido. We will also take part in sound healing and during that time you will be able to learn how to use the instruments as well! Giant gong, singing bowls, heart drum, so much fun! Additionally, we will be learning about essential oils throughout the week and how they can help you connect even deeper with yourself.

F.R.O.L.F. (Flinging Round Objects Long and Far)
Do you love the outdoors? Do you love hanging out with your friends and having EPIC game sessions? Do you love to use your hands and build? This is the Intersession for you!!! In this weeklong experience we will build our own Frisbee Golf holes, take daily field trips to golf courses to hurl our discs, try not to injure any pedestrians, and yell “FORE!” hundreds of times. In addition, we will construct portable frisbee golf holes that can be taken to the field regularly for epic FROLF BATTLES!! We will also learn about the physics behind what makes a frisbee fly and work with professional Frisbee players to learn how to throw the perfect disc.

작년과 비교해 보면 같은 프로그램을 하시는 분도 계시고, 작년 프로그램을 업데이트하신 분도 계시고, 아예 다른 걸로 바꾸신 분도 계시네요. 아마 프로그램을 진행하면서 받은 피드백을 바탕으로 올 해 프로그램을 짜셔서 그런 것 같습니다.
저희 아이는 Top Chef Jr.를 선택했어요.
Intersession 전에 2회의 준비 모임을 통해 기본적인 오리엔테이션을 받고, 필요한 물품들을 도네이션하도록 요청 받았죠. 저도 쌀 한 푸대 도네이션 했답니다.
이번 한 주 동안 멕시칸/이탈리안 음식을 주로 만들게 될텐데요.
Monday (19th): Mexican inspired dishes

Tuesday (20th): Walking Field Trip to Liberty Public Market, and Mystery Bag Challenge
; 이날은 직접 파스타 면을 뽑고 미트볼을 만들었대요. 면 반죽하는 일이 고되었는지 학교 끝날 때 즈음에 저희 아이는 기절할 듯이 잠들었다고 선생님께서 사진을 보내주셨어요~^^
Wednesday (21st): Field Trip to Education First
; 오늘은 디저트 만드는 날! 학교 부근에 있는 레스토랑의 키친을 빌려서 딸기 파이를 만들어왔답니다. 집에서 딸기 케익 만들겠다고 난리치는거 겨우 말렸네요 ㅎㅎ
보시다시피 로보틱스부터 자전거 여행 및 명상까지 정말 다양한 프로그램들이 준비되어 있습니다.
이 일주일짜리 프로그램을 진행하는데 적지 않은 돈이 들것은 쉽게 예상할 수 있습니다. 학교 특성상 예산이 배정은 되어 있겠지만 넉넉하진 않아 부족한 재원을 마련하기 위해 1월에 5K Running 행사를 통해 학부모들에게 도네이션을 받았습니다.
저희도 작지만 도네이션을 했고, 클래스에서 하는 개별적으로 오는 도네이션 요청은 가급적이면 하는 쪽으로 참여하고 있어요.
이렇게 받은 도네이션에 대해 학교에서는 금액의 많고 적고와 상관없이 고마워하세요. 후에 이런 펀드레이징 행사에 대해 블로그에서 쓰겠지만, 적은 금액이라도 모이면 큰 돈이 되어 이런 행사들의 밑천이 되지요. 그것이 내 아이의 미래와 직업 탐구에 쓰인다면 더할나위 없이 값진 투자라고 생각합니다.
물론 학부모가 즐거운 마음으로 펀드레이징에 참여하도록 좋은 프로그램을 기획하고 세부 프로그램 계획을 세운 학교와 선생님들의 열정과 노력이 절대적으로 필요하긴 하지요.
