삶의 지혜

어느 날 페르시아의 왕이 신하들에게 마음이 슬플 때나 기쁠 때나 마음을 다스릴 물건을 가져올 것을 명령했습니다. 신하들은 밤새 모여 앉아 토론한 끝에 왕에게 다음과 같은 글귀가 있는 반지를 바칩니다. 다른 버전으로 다윗 왕이 전쟁 전에 지혜로운 조언이 담긴 말을 지닌 구하던 중에 소년 솔로몬의 지혜가 담긴 말을 우연히 듣게 되고 자신의 반지에 새겼다는 일화도 있습니다.

This too Shall pass away

사실, 이 말은 자기 위로의 말이나 자기 합리화로서 받아들이면 안 됩니다.

Shall은 전통적으로 나의 의지가 중요한 게 아니고 나와 함께 있는 자의 의지가 더 중요합니다. 비근한 예로, Shall we dance?라는 물음에서 본인은 dance라는 단어를 원하지만 shall로 물어보는 순간 상대방의 의견에 따라 내 의견이 관철될 수도 있고 거절될 수도 있습니다. 그래서 shall은 이미 내 의지의 영역을 넘어선 어쩔 수 없음과 그 결과에 나를 내맡겨야 함을 드러냅니다

Too가 있기에 이 전에도 이런 일이 있었다는 것도 알 수 있지요. 그래서 이번 일도 내 의지를 넘어선 일로 받아들이겠소, 무슨 결과가 오든 내 그냥 받아들이겠소…

그리고 pass라는 말로 그로 인해 나는 꺾이지 않으리… 그냥 강한 바람맞으나 이로써 죽지는 않고 (정신적으로나 영적으로) 더 강해질 수도 있으리… 이런 뉘앙스도 있습니다.

그러나 away라는 말에서 앞에서 한 일도 종국엔 그냥 사라지고 마는 것이라는 순간성, 가변성, 변화성에 대해 말합니다. 그때 그때 벌어지는 일은 그 일대로 큰 사건이 되었을지라도 언젠가 한 순간 사라진다는 이야기입니다.

그래서 어떻게 보면 새옹지마(변방 노인의 말)처럼 어떻게 규정되기 어려운 인생에 비록 길흉화복이 있지만 이 모든 것은 가변적으로 시시각각으로 변하면서 나 역시도 변화시키게 됩니다. 아(我)를 넘어선 비아(非我)로 가는 문턱에서 인간의 유한성을 깨닫고 신을 찾기도 하고, 모든 것은 변한다는 철학적인 메시지를 얻게 됩니다.

One day, the king of Persia ordered his subjects to bring him an object that would control their hearts, whether they were sad or happy. Another version tells the story that King David, while searching for words of wisdom before a war, overheard the words of wisdom of the boy Solomon and engraved them on his own ring.

This too shall pass away

In fact, this phrase shouldn't be taken as self-consolation or self-justification.

Shall traditionally means it's not about your will, but the will of those with you. As an analogous example, in the question Shall we dance? I want the word dance, but the moment I ask with shall, my opinion may or may not be accepted, depending on the opinion of the other person. So shall reveals an inevitability that is already beyond the realm of my will, and that I must surrender myself to the consequences.

With shall, I can see that this has happened before, so I'll accept this as beyond my will, and I'll just accept whatever the outcome is...

And with the word PASS, I will not be broken by it... it's just a strong wind, but I won't die from it, and I may even become stronger (mentally and spiritually)... there's a nuance to it.

But with the word away, we're talking about the transience, the variability, the changeability, that whatever you've done in the past will eventually just fade away... whatever happens at that time, however big of an event it may have been, will one day fade away.

So in a way, even though life is hard to define, like saeonjima (an old man's words), even though there are auspicious and unuspicious occasions, all of them are variable and changeable, and they also change me. At the threshold of the Via, which is beyond the I, we realize our finitude and find God, and we get the philosophical message that everything changes.
