좋은 아침입니다. 여러분. 여산사에 다시 오신걸 환영합니다. 여러분 중 몇은 글쎄요. 모두들 지난 달에 여기 있었던 것 같군요. 한 달 동안 여러분을 못 본 것 같은 느낌입니다. 여하튼, 사실 여러분 중 대부분은 지난 달 즈음부터 계속 여기 있었습니다. 우리가 얼마 전 1개월의 여름 불칠과 선칠을 마쳤습니다.

And many of you went for long sits. Many of you went for long bowing. So, I'm very pleased. It turns out that there's nothing more worthwhile than cultivation. We're practicing the Dharma of the Buddhas.
여러분 중 많은 사람이 오래 앉기를 했습니다. 여러분 중 많은 사람이 절 수행을 긴 시간 했습니다. 그래서 나는 매우 기쁩니다. 보아하니 수행보다 더 가치는 것은 없었습니다. 우리는 부처님들의 다르마를 수행하고 있스니다.
The Nirvana Dharma like the Buddha says. And what is this Nirvana Dharma? Anyone knows? You've been Buddhist for a long long time. She's a poor nun. She's yawning like crazy. She's not used to this hectic schedule.
부처님이 말씀하시듯 열반의 다르마입니다. 그렇다면 이 열반법이란 무엇인가요? 누구 아는 사람? 여러분은 불자로 지낸지 오래오래 되었잖아요. 저 여자분은 불쌍한 비구니에요. 미친듯이 하품을 해댑니다. 이런 미친 일정에 익숙하지 않아요.
What is to certify? Does it mean you're dead? Right? You hear people say that the Buddha attained nirvana. When he died, people said the Buddha entered nirvana. So does it mean that we always practice his nirvana Dharma? His nirvana Dharma that we die and we leave our wives? Or your husband. Because your husband, I know, I heard. Many of you. Husband are so worried. You come to the temple. And you certify this Nirvana Dharma. You're going to leave me, right? Huh? What is the certifying Nirvana? Anyone know?
(열반이) 뭘 증득하나요? 그러면 그건 여러분이 죽었다는 뜻인가요? 맞나요? 사람들이 부처님께서 열반을 이루셨다고 말하는 걸 듣습니다. 부처님이 돌아가셨을 때, 사람들은 부처님께서 열반에 들었다고 말했습니다. 그러면 그건 우리가 항상 부처님의 열반법을 수행한다는 의미인가요? 부처님의 열반법에서 우리가 죽으면 아내를 떠나거나, 또는 남편을 떠납니다. 왜냐하면 남편은 알잖아요. 내가 듣기로, 여러분 중 많은 사람은, 남편은 걱정이 큽니다. 여러분이 절에 와서, 그리고 여러분이 이 열반법을 증득하면, 나를 떠나게 되는 건가요? 맞죠? 허? 열반을 증득한다는 것이 무엇이죠? 아는 사람?
Nirvana is a state of mind. A state of being. It's an absence of affliction. It doesn't mean you're dead. Doesn't mean you just sit there and unmoving. No? She's what? She has a good question? I'm sorry?
열반은 마음의 경계입니다. 존재의 상태입니다. 번뇌의 부재를 말합니다. 그건 사망했다는 걸 의미하지 않습니다. 그냥 앉아서 부동임을 의미하지 않습니다. 아닌가요? 그녀가 뭐라고요? 좋은 질문인가요? 잘 안들려요.
Does entering nirvana mean death? This entering nirvana means death. You say entering nirvana to rule nirvana. It means, yes, you leave this world. Okay? You leave this world. That's correct. Okay? What? Are you still alive? I don't think so. I haven't done it yet. I hope, I hope to enter Nirvana. Okay.
열반에 든다는 것은 죽음을 의미하나요? 이 열반에 들어간다는 것은 죽음을 의미합니다. 열반에 들어간다고 하는 것은 열반을 다스리는 겁니다.그건 네, 여러분이 이 세상을 떠남을 의미합니다. 그렇죠? 이 세상을 떠납니다. 맞습니다. 그렇죠? 뭐라고요? 여전히 살아있다고요? 난 그렇게 생각하지 않아요. 내가 해보질 못해서요. 열반에 들어가보고 싶네요. 좋습니다.
So when in terms of language. If you enter Nirvana, that means you leave this world. Okay. So that's why the Buddha, that's why people say that so and so enter Nirvana. So people say that, oh this Buddha entered nirvana and such monk, so and so monk enter Nirvana and so on. And it's not quite correct unless you are a sage, a sagely monk.
그래서 언어 상, 열반에 들어간다면, 그건 이 세상을 떠난다는 것을 뜻합니다. 좋습니다. 그래서 부처님께서… 그래서 사람들이 그렇게 말하면, 그래서 열반에 들면, 사람들이 오! 이 부처님께서 열반에 드셨다, 그 스님은, 이런 이런 스님이 열반에 드셨다 등등 이라고 말하는 겁니다. 그건 완전히 맞는건 아닙니다. 성자가 아닌 이상, 성자인 스님이 아닌 이상은요.
Whereas, you are an ordinary monk. You cannot enter Nirvana. You got to go see King Yama. Is that clear? Okay. But while alive, they just... You can certify to nirvana. What does it mean? Maybe from experience. As you certify to the state of nirvana. that you will enter when you die. Is that clear? That when you enter nirvana. When you are alive. Meaning you are able. Your mind is able to certify to the state that you will have when you die. Okay? Any questions?
반대로 평범한 스님은 열반에 들어갈 수 없습니다. 염라대왕을 가서 만나야만 합니다. 아셨나요? 하지만 살아있는 동안, 열반에 증득할 수 있는 것입니다. 그게 무슨 뜻인가요? 아마도 그건 경험 상, 여러분이 죽을 때 들어갈 열반의 경계를 증득한다는 겁니다. 알았나요? 여러분이 열반에 들어가면, 살아있는 동안, 그건 무슨 뜻이냐면 여러분이 죽을 때, 여러분의 마음이 그런 경계에 증득할 수 있다는 의미입니다. 알았나요? 질문 있나요?
So when you are alive, you are certified in Nirvana. What is it like? You give the wrong answer. Look, look at the poor boy now he's screaming. He says, why are you doing crossing my legs? I'm too young for this. This is too much. Barely 6 months. And she's putting him to half lotus already. And the boy says, what is this? What's happening to my legs? This is too much. Take it easy. Let him walk first. Please. Your husband is going to scream at me. Will you spare? Not even children do you, he would tell me.
그래서 살아있는 동안 열반에 증득하면, 그게 어떤가요? 틀린 답을 줬습니다. 보세요. 소리를 질러대는 불쌍한 아이를 보십시오. 아이가 말하길, 왜 내 다리를 꼬아놓는거에요? 이거하기엔 너무 어린데. 이거 너무해요. 겨우 6개월 되가는데, 아이에게 반가부좌를 벌써 시키고 있습니다. 그리고 아이가 말하길, 이건 뭐하는거에요! 내 다리에 무슨 일이 생기고 있는거죠? 너무 아파요. 살살해요. 일단 걸어야지요. 제발! 당신의 남편이 날 보면 소리지를거에요. 봐주세요.
Did you see the video on Facebook of Sabina, 7 year old girl? Anyone seen it? Some of us are not on the internet, I think. There's a girl who is a daughter of my disciple who is from Mexico. And she's been in meditating for 3 years now. And, so, we interviewed her. And we asked her, Why is it that you cross your legs and do the leg pains? She says, because it feels good. And then, she says that, At first, I came to the temple 3 years ago. The Dharma talk was so boring. And now, we asked her, I find it interesting.

그녀가 말하길, 밤중에 자기가 새처럼, 용처럼 허공에 날아다니는 것을 봤다고 합니다. 이봐요. 보세요, 봐요, 보세요. 하하하하. 당연히 사실이 아니죠. 동의합니다. 비구니 스님이 날 너무 잘 먹여요. 과체중입니다. 그런데 어떻게 날 수 있겠어요. 하하하. 내가 발표를 해야만 할까요? 하하하.
Last time, I made a mistake of declaring I be on a boiled vegetable diet. I admit to you, I couldn't swallow it. It's so hard to swallow. Now, they force me to say, make another declaration. Am I afraid of you? Of course, I'll be on a boiled vegetable diet. So that I can leave all of you. Hahahaha. After you said that, I still feel it. Hahahaha.
지난 번 내가 데친 채소를 먹겠다고 선포하는 실수를 했습니다. 내가 인정할게요. 삼킬 수가 없었어요. 삼키기가 너무 힘들더군요. 이제 사람들이 나한테 또 다른 선포를 하라고 강요합니다. 내가 여러분을 무서워하냐고요? 당연하죠. 내가 데친 야채만 먹게 할건데요. 그래야 내가 여러분 모두를 떠날테니까요. 하하. 여러분이 그렇게 말한 후로, 내가 여전히 그걸 느낍니다. 하하.
Anyway. What happens is that once you certify, once you certify Nirvana, You can enter Nirvana at will. That is why when you die, King Yama cannot, cannot access you. The rest of us, we cannot certify the Nirvana. That's why when we die, we have no choice. Our mind become chaotic. We are afraid to die. I don't know about you, but I'm scared of death.
어쨌든 일단 증득하면, 열반을 증득하면, 마음대로 열반에 들어갈 수 있는 겁니다. 그러므로 죽으면 염라대왕이 당신에게 접근할 수 없는겁니다. 그외 우리같은 사람들은 열반에 증득할 수 없습니다. 그래서 죽으면 어쩔 도리가 없습니다. 마음이 혼란해집니다. 그래서 죽음이 두렵습니다. 여러분은 어떤지 모르겠지만 나는 죽음이 두려워요.
Okay. Because of that, when you die, you have to go seek King Yama. As long as you have this fear of death, you have to go seek King Yama. Oh, I shouldn't tell you this secret. You ask yourself. If you're still afraid of death. But if you're certified to Nirvana. When you die, you naturally will enter Nirvana and King Yama. You can bypass King Yama. You can go anywhere you please. Okay. That's what happens. Okay.
알았나요? 그래서 죽으면 염라대왕을 가서 만나야 합니다. 죽음에 대한 두려움이 있는 한 염라대왕을 만날 수 밖에 없습니다. 아! 이 비밀을 말하지 말아야 했는데, 자기 자신에게 물어보십시오. 아직 죽음이 두렵다면요. 하지만 열반을 증득하면 자연스럽게 열반에 들어갈 것이고, 염라대왕을 피할 수 있습니다. 알았나요? 그런 일이 생깁니다.
So that's why it's worth it to certify Nirvana right now. You're free from the wheel of reincarnation. Okay. When you're alive, when you're certified Nirvana. You are free from all afflictions. You're not even afraid to die. Okay. You're no longer afraid of your wife. No, no good. You're not afraid of your husband. You see. Uh, alright. So, uh, the, the, the Arhats, they certify this Nirvana with residues. Okay.
그래서 그게 당장 열반에 증득할만한 가치가 있는 이유입니다. 윤회의 바퀴에서 자유롭게 됩니다. 알았죠? 살아있는 동안, 열반에 증득하면, 모든 괴로움에서 자유롭습니다. 죽음조차 두렵지 않습니다. 알았죠? 더 이상 아내를 무서워하지 않습니다. 아니, 안 좋네요. 남편을 무서워하지 않는 겁니다. 이해하나요? 좋아요. 그래서 아라한… 이들이 이런 유여열반을 증득합니다.
The Bodhisattvas certify to Nirvana without residues. Okay. And if you're a Buddha, you enter the Buddha's Nirvana. Okay. So there are different kinds of Nirvana. Depending on your level of attainment. Okay. But once you certify Nirvana. Okay. When you're alive, then you are considered a sagely person. Alright. Any questions? And once you certify to this Nirvana. Okay. You see the state for the first time in your life where you have no affliction whatsoever. Zero. Okay.
보살들은 무여열반에 증득합니다. 알았나요? 그리고 부처님이라면 부처님의 열반에 들어갑니다. 오케이? 그러니까 열반에 여러 종류가 있습니다. 여러분의 성취 수준에 따라서 말이죠. 그러나 한번 열반에 증득하면, 살아있는 동안, 그때 여러분은 성자로 간주됩니다. 알았나요? 질문 있나요? 그리고 이 열반에 증득하면, 생전처음으로 어떤 번뇌도 전혀 없는 경계를 봅니다. 아예 없어요.
What is life? Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh. I did not know. I know. I'm going to go to the other side. I don't know. I don't know. You're still here. Your body is still here. Your conscious is still. You're still here. You don't go anywhere. But once you certify Nirvana. Wow. Cool.
인생이란 뭐죠? 어..어…어… 나도 몰랐어요. 그 반대편을 살펴보겠어요. 모르겠지만… 여기 아직도 있잖아요. 여러분의 몸이 아직 여기 있어요. 여러분의 의식이 아직…여전히 여기 있습니다. 아무데도 가지 않습니다. 하지만 열반에 증득하면, 와우… 멋져요.
Do you hear that? Nghe. Huh? Do you hear that? Sometimes, his accent is pretty, pretty heavy. Unlike the Central Vietnam people. Our accent, you know. So much clearer. Okay. Back then, you know, the monks are very poor. The true monks are very poor. They don't have robes. Like us. We have at least two robes. Okay. The Taiwanese monks, they get new robe every year. And if you have a lot of money, you can even make more, you know, more robes. Okay. So, he went out and told his friends. Huh? He says, I got a new robe. I thought I would be happy, but I'm not happy. So, they said, so they said, so they asked him. So, they asked him, so what do you want then?
들으셨나요? 네? 들리나요? 가끔 저분의 억양이 많이 쎕니다. 베트남 중부지역 사람과 달라요. 우리 억양이요. 훨씬 더 명확하지요. 알았죠? 그때 스님들이 매우 가난했어요. 진정한 스님은 아주 가난합니다. 승복이 없었어요. 우리는…우리는 최소 두벌의 승복을 지닙니다. 알았나요? 대만 스님들은 매년 새 승복을 받아요. 그리고 돈이 더 많으면 더 많은 승복을 얻을 수 있습니다. 알았죠? 그래서 그는 친구들에게 말했습니다. 그가 말하길, 내가 새 승복을 받았어요. 행복할 줄 알았는데, 그렇지 않아요. 그래서 친구들이 그에게 물었습니다. 그렇다면 원하는게 무엇인지 물었어요.
He says, I want a coffin. So, they made him a coffin. And he says, tomorrow in the North Gate, you go out there, that's why I'm going to die. So, they all gathered on the North Gate the following day. And he got the coffin there, but he didn't die. And next day, he said, maybe next day. And he still didn't pass away. And then, the next day, they went to the South Gate. So the third day, fourth day, people, they tell each other, they say, this guy is a liar. So forget it. He's not going to die. It's no spectacle. So he brought the coffin there. He died himself. So he sat down, lied into the coffin, and asked them to close the coffin. And they closed the coffin, they opened it, and he's dead. Okay. That is the proof that when ... Even nobody. Nobody left in the coffin. This is to prove to you that when you certify the nirvana, You can die anytime you wish. You can go anytime you wish. Uh huh. Alright. And whether you make your body disappear or not is, is something I don't know. Maybe it's a magic thing that my Master hasn't taught us yet. Alright.
그가 말하길, 관을 원한다고 했어요. 그래서 사람들이 그를 위한 관을 만들어줬습니다. 그리고 그는 다음 날 북문으로 나가서, “그래서 이게 내가 죽을 이유다”라고 했습니다. 그 다음 날 그가 말하길, 아마도 그 다음날, 그는 여전히 죽지 않았죠. 그리고 그 다음 날, 사람들이 남문으로 갔습니다. 그리고 삼일째, 사일째, 사람들은 서로 이야길 했어요. 그 사람은 거짓말쟁이 라고요. 그냥 무시하라면서요. 그는 죽지 않을 거라 말했어요. 구경거리는 없다고요. 그래서 그는 관을 거기로 가져왔습니다. 그는 스스로 죽었습니다. 그는 자리에 앉아 과 안에 누워 관을 닫아 달라고 청했습니다. 그리고 사람들이 관을 닫았다가 열었는데, 그가 죽었어요. 알았나요? 그게 바로 그 증거에요. 아무도 관 안에 남아있질 않았습니다. 이게 열반에 증득하면, 언제든지 원할 때 죽을 수 있다는 겁니다. 원하는 때면 언제든 갈 수 있는 겁니다. 알았나요? 몸을 사라지게 만드는지 여부는 난 모르겠습니다. 아마도 나의 스승님이 나한텐 아직 가르쳐주지 않은 마법같은 것일 수도 있나봅니다.
So, this, there are plenty of anecdotes in Buddhism that tell you that these people who certify nirvana can come and go as they please. You can live as long as you want. You can live anytime you want. Okay. Any questions? But once you enter nirvana, and you decide to come back. Okay. There is these people who enter nirvana and come back. Okay. That's when you can see the state of nirvana. Make sense? Right?
그래서 불교에는 열반을 증득한 사람들이 마음대로 왔다가 갈 수 있다는 일화가 많습니다. 원하는 만큼 살 수 있는 겁니다. 원하면 언제든지 살 수 있습니다. 알았나요? 질문 있나요? 하지만 열반에 들어가면 다시 돌아오길 결심합니다. 알았죠. 이렇게 열반에 들어갔다가 돌아오는 사람들이 있습니다. 그때 열반의 경계를 볼 수 있는 겁니다. 알았나요?
Because you observe them. And they observe that these people have no affliction whatsoever. You give them a robe. They say, okay. Give them a coffin. Now, after my death, my body will be taken care of. You don't realize that a coffin is expensive. Especially for monks. Okay. So, that's why we invented burning. So, it's less expensive to burn our body. Okay. Anyway. So, you have no affliction. Meaning that no matter what happens to you, you're not afflicted at all. Okay.
왜냐하면 여러분이 그들을 관찰하기 때문입니다. 그리고 그들은 이 사람들이 아예 아무런 번뇌도 없다는 걸 관찰합니다. 그들에게 승복을 줍니다. 사람들이 말하길, 그들에게 관을 줘라. 이제, 내가 죽은 후, 내 몸은 처리될 것이다. 관이 비싸다는 건 깨닫지 못하죠. 특히 스님들은요. 알았나요? 그래서 우리가 화장하는 걸 개발했습니다. 몸을 태우는 게 덜 비쌉니다. 알았나요? 아무튼 그래서 번뇌가 없습니다. 그건 무슨 의미냐면, 무슨일이 생기던 상관없이, 전혀 번뇌가 없다는 것이죠.
Yes? The Korean parents pass down to you. Right? It's up right now. That's what you're worried about. Absolutely. For your case, yes. I'm positive about it. Yes ma'am? But, in general, let me answer the question first before you ask the second question. And remember, one hard question for a day. But, in general, whoever creates karma bears the consequence of your own action. Your children will not have to bear your karmic retribution. Alright? Is that clear?
네? 한국 부모님들이 당신에게 물려줍니다. 그렇죠? 지금 올라옵니다. 그게 당신이 걱정하는 부분입니다. 물론 그렇죠. 당신의 경우. 네, 나는 그게 그런 듯합니다. 네? 하지만 일반적으로… 당신이 두번 째 질문하기에 앞서 내가 먼저 그 질문에 답하겠습니다. 그리고 기억하세요. 하루에 어려운 질문은 하나만 합니다. 아무튼 일반적으로 업을 만드는 사람은 본인의 행동의 결과를 견뎌내야 합니다. 당신의 아이들이 당신의 업보를 견뎌낼 필요는 없을 겁니다. 알았나요? 이해했나요?
They don't, the children are exempt from your karmic retribution. So, whatever offenses you create, karma you create, you will reap your own retribution. Okay? Meaning, for example, if you create good karma. But I know you're all good people. Maybe. I hope. If you create good karma. For example. What's good karma? Be a good girl. Okay? You obey your parents. That is good karma. Okay? What, what, what, what other examples of good karma? You give. Practice giving. You, uh, uh, you, uh, you, uh, do the, the, the good things. Okay? Those are good karma.
아이들은… 여러분의 업보에서 면제됩니다. 그래서 여러분이 어떤 죄를 짓던간에, 어떤 업을 짓던간에, 오직 당신만이 그 업보를 받게 됩니다. 알았나요? 그게 무슨 의미냐면, 예를 들어 만약 선한 업을 짓는다면.. 내가 알아요. 여러분 모두 좋은 사람이잖아요? 아마도? 희망하건데 그렇잖아요. 아무튼 만약 선업을 지으면… 선업이 뭐죠? 착한 사람이 되는거에요. 뭐 예를 들어 부모님 말을 잘 듣는다거나.. 그게 좋은 업입니다. 선업의 다른 예로 뭐가 있죠? 보시하는 겁니다. 보시를 실천합니다. 좋은 일을 하는거죠. 알았죠? 그런게 좋은 업입니다.
If you do those, you have, uh, the corresponding rewards or retributions. According to the level of goodness you create. For example, you do some good deed that affects a lot of people. It's good for a lot of people. Then your retribution is much bigger. Yes, Julie. You had a second question. Uh, you, uh, I answered your question already. Okay. Think about it. Action. Right. Help. That person help himself. Retribution. None of his business. This is why we can look at you create karma and say, Okay. Okay. It applies to disciples too, not just your parents.
