good morning, everyone 여러분 모두 좋은 아침입니다. There’s a Chinese translation by the nun there 저기 비구니 스님이 하는 중국어 통역이 있습니다. You need translation into Chinese 여러분이 중국어 통역이 필요하다면 말입니다. The majority of the people of the world, they don’t believe in ghosts, spirits or god 세상의 대다수의 사람들이 귀, 신 혹은 (천상의) 신을 믿지 않습니다. or demons for that matter 혹은 (믿지 않는) 그 문제에 관해서는 마도 말입니다. 

You can’t blame them because they need facts before they believe it 하지만 여러분들은 그들을 비난할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 그걸 믿기 전에 사실이 필요합니다. But for us people who meditate 하지만 우리 명상하는 사람들은, I don’t know about the other schools 다른 종은 모르겠지만, but in our experience how students have no problems believing in ghosts, spirits and gods and so forth and demons for that matter 우리 경험으로 보면 어떻게 학생들이 귀, 신 그리고 (천상의) 신 등등과 마를 믿는데 문제가 없습니다. Why is that 왜 그렇습니까? Because when you meditate and you improve, I define improvement for you dhosigakus 여러분이 명상하고 진전하면, 내가 여러분을 위해 진전을 정의해주겠습니다. Improvements is meaning that when you mediate you enter Samadhi  진전은 여러분이 명상하면 삼매에 든다는 의미입니다 which the majority of the people, all of the students who come here, who meditate in the past for past 2 to 3 months they all enter samadhi 대부분의 사람들, 여기 오는, 지난 2~3개월 간 명상하는 학생 전부는 모두 삼매에 듭니다. 

And what’s so important about that 그리고 그것에 대해 중요한 것은, that’s my purpose 그게 내 목적입니다. because that’s my personal purpose of my teaching you meditation 왜냐하면 그게 내가 여러분에게 명상을 가르치는 개인적인 목적이기 때문입니다. That’s why I show up here every Saturday morning to sit with you 그래서 내가 매주 토요일 아침마다 여러분과 함께 앉기 위해 여기 나타납니다 so that we can meditate together 그렇게 해서 우리가 함께 명상할 수 있도록 말입니다. in order to help you enter Samadhil. a lot quicker 여러분이 훨씬 빨리 삼매에 들도록 돕기 위해서 입니다. ok. because once you enter samadhi you see the benefits why chan is very beneficial for you 일단 여러분이 삼매에 들면 여러분은 왜 챤이 여러분에게 매우 이로운지 그 이로움을 볼 수 있기 때문입니다. There are so many benefits 아주 많은 이로움이 있습니다. One common thing people talk about 사람들이 얘기하는 한 가지 공통적인 것은 for example people feel very peaceful. very reinvigorated 예를 들어 사람들은 아주 평화로움과 다시금 활기를 느낍니다. yes? yes or no? yes 그렇습니까? 그렇습니까 아닙니까? 그렇습니다. If you enter samadhi 만약 여러분이 삼매에 들면, many places where you all meditate, you can meditate for 10-20 years 여러분이 명상하는 많은 장소에서 여러분은 10~20년 간 명상할 수 있습니다 you don’t enter samadhi 여러분은 삼매에 들지 않습니다. but they feel relaxed 하지만 사람들은 긴장이 풀리는 걸 느낍니다. But actually the main thing is that you don’t really have a breakthrough, significant breakthrough 하지만 실제적으로 주요한 것은 여러분이 진짜로 획기적인 진전, 특기할만한 진전은 없습니다. until you enter samadhi 여러분이 삼매에 들기까지는. truly is that you have to enter and see how beneficial it is 진정으로 여러분이 삼매에 들고 얼마나 이로운지 봐야만 합니다. once you enter samadhi, you naturally won’t quit meditation anymore 일단 여러분이 삼매에 들면, 자연스럽게 더 이상 명상을 관두지 않을 겁니다. Because if you stop meditating this is something missing in your life 여러분이 명상을 관두면 여러분 삶에서 뭔가를 놓치는 것이기 때문입니다. yes 그렇습니까? and of course you feel healthier because you enter samadhi you heal yourself 그리고 물론 여러분이 삼매에 들면 스스로를 치유하기 때문에 여러분은 더 건강해진 것을 느낍니다. 오케이. it’s amazing 놀랍습니다. my students, who are, some of my students who are quite advanced 내 학생들, 몇몇 내 학생들은 꽤 앞서 있습니다. What I mean quite advanced meaning that they are the better than the overwhelming majority of meditation teachers 꽤 앞서 있다는 뜻은 그들이 명상을 가르치는 선생들의 압도적인 대다수보다 낫다는 말입니다. in the us, in europe I have seen. In Taiwan, in china in Vietnam I have seen, in Cambodia in Thailand, in Myanmar so forth 미국에서, 유럽에서, 대만에서 중국에서 베트남에서, 캄보디아, 태국, 미얀마 등에서 내가 본 이들보다 말입니다. and when they are sick they still forget that they’re supposed to meditate 그들이 아프면 명상해야만 한다는 걸 여전히 잊어버립니다. It’s much better to meditate when you are not feeling well 여러분 어디가 좋지 않다면 명상하는 것이 훨씬 좋습니다, 오케이? alright 알겠습니까? any questions 질문 있습니까. 오케이. so anyway the reason I want to bring it up to you 그래서 아무튼 내가 이걸 여러분에게 꺼낸고 싶어한 이유는 is the fact that there’s the world as you know is made of yin and yang 사실 세계는 음과 양으로 이뤄졌습니다. The ghosts belong to the yin, the yin side of the world where you cannot see them 귀들은 여러분이 볼 수 없는 음의 세계의 측면에 속합니다. The yang side is the gods, spirits and the demons 양의 측면은 (천상의 )신들과 신 그리고 마들이 있습니다. same things. similarly they have different wave length so your eyes cannot see them 마찬가지로 그들은 다른 파장을 가지고 있어서 우리의 눈으론 그들을 볼 수 없습니다. but if you enter samadhi and eventually you open your spiritual eyes 하지만 여러분이 삼매에 들면 결국엔 여러분이 신통력이 있는 눈을 뜹니다, 오케이. you are able to see them 여러분은 그들을 볼 수 있습니다. ok. my students can see them 내 학생들은 그들을 볼 수 있습니다. It’s not a good thing to see them 그들을 보는 건 좋은 게 아닙니다 because sometimes they are scary, they are very ugly looking 왜냐면 가끔 그들은 아주 무섭고 아주 추하게 생겼기 때문입니다. The gods and goddesses are very very attractive (천상의) 신과 여신들은 아주 아주 매력적입니다. ok, you want to see them 그들을 보고 싶습니까? You don’t want to see them, either 여러분은 그들도 보고 싶어하지 않습니다. They are too pretty so that you want to go up there 그들은 매우 이뻐서 여러분이 그 위로 가보고 싶어 합니다. But if you see the ghosts then you will become scared and you can’t sleep and you are afraid of dark 하지만 여러분이 귀신을 보면 여러분은 무서워할 것이고 잠들지 못하고 어둠을 무서워합니다. ok. So it’s a good thing not to see them at all 그래서 그들을 전혀 보지 않는 게 좋은 겁니다. I prefer not to see. ok. unless I must 내가 봐야만 하는 게 아니라면 난 안 보는 걸 선호합니다. alright. That’s my attitude 그게 내 태도입니다. Only do things because I need to 내가 해야할 필요가 있는 것만 합니다. Otherwise I don’t want to do it 안 그러면 하고 싶지 않습니다. ok so anyway. but for us humans it’s the yin and yang, we are in the middle. between yin and yang 오케이, 그래서 아무튼 우리 인간은 음과 양에서 중간입니다, 음과 양 사이에서 말입니다. 오케이. That is why we had a disadvantage 그래서 우리는 불리합니다. We can not see the other world, the yin or yang world 우리는 다른 세계, 음 혹은 양의 세계를 볼 수 없습니다. your normal eyes cannot see them 여러분의 평범한 눈으로 그들을 볼 수 없습니다. alright 알겠습니까? but your spiritual eyes can 하지만 여러분의 영적인 눈을 볼 수 있습니다. So eventually you will see them for yourself 그래서 결국 여러분은 스스로 그들을 볼 겁니다. 오케이? alright 알겠습니까? any questions 다른 질문 있습니까. yes 네. (질문: The ghosts understand that you can‘t see them 귀신들은 우리가 그들을 못 보는 걸 이해합니까?) (마스터) yes 네. most of us, they understand normally we cannot see them 우맂 nd 대부분은, 그들은 평상시에 우리가 그들을 볼 수 없는 걸 이해합니다 but some of us can see them. they know that 하지만 우리 중 몇몇은 그들을 볼 수 있습니다. 그들이 그걸 압니다. The question is that can a ghost know that do they know that we cannot see them 질문은 귀신이 우리가 그들을 볼 수 없는 걸 알고 있냐는 겁니다. The answer is yes, they understand we cannot see them normally with our normal eyes 그 대답은 네, 그들은 평상시에 우리의 평범한 눈으로 그들을 볼 수 없단 걸 이해합니다. But eventually we can see them when we meditate 하지만 결국 우리가 명상하면 그들을 볼 수 있습니다. 오케이? yes 네. (질문 못 알아듣겠음) (마스터) ? dog, they came at you 개, 그들이 당신에게 왔습니다. Does it have fire in its mouth 입에 불이 있었습니까? Does its mouth breathe fire 입으로 불을 뿜었습니까? no, no 아니라고 합니다. 오케이. Does it look like a Doberman 도베르만 같이 생겼습니까? 오케이. That’s real 진짜인가 봅니다. So, what’s the problem 그래서 문제가 뭡니까? When you meditate 네, 여러분이 명상을 하면 말입니다, Brady saids he saw a dog in a bright dog in with light, right 브래디가 말하길, 빛과 함께 있는 환한 개 한 마리를 봤다고 합니다? and coming at him closer and closer with its teeth like that(마스터 이를 드러낸 모습), right 그리고 그에게 점점 더 가까이 (물려고) 이를 드러내고 왔다고 합니다, 맞습니까? Or is it just wiping its tail 혹은 꼬리를 그저 흔들었습니까? coming at your face 당신 얼굴로 왔습니까? ok. welcome to the world meditation 오케이, 명상의 세계에 오신 걸 환영합니다. That’s nothing yet 그건 아직 아무것도 아닙니다. ok 오케이. And there’s much scarier things 훨씬 더 무서운 것들이 있습니다. but that’s natural. that’s natural 하지만 그건 자연스러운 겁니다, that’s why you have, you meditate long enough 그래서 여러분이 충분히 길게 명상을 하면, you go what these are called states 이런 경계라 불리는 것들에 갑니다, and you see enough of them you know, then you don’t question anymore 그리고 그것들을 충분히 보고나면 더 이상 의문으로 여기지 않습니다. There’s more to the world than what you can see 여러분이 볼 수 있는 것보다 더 많은 세계가 있습니다. alright 알겠습니까? yes 네. (질문: What certain samadhi level that we can start to see those ghost 어느 특정 선정의 단계부터 우리가 그 귀신들을 보기 시작할 수 있습니까?) (마스터) 

you can see it as soon as you enter the first dhyana 여러분이 초선에 들자마자 여러분은 볼 수 있습니다. 오케이? The question is what level can you begin to see the other world, the yin or yang world 질문은 무슨 단계부터 여러분이 다른 세계, 그 음 혹은 양의 세계를 보기 시작할 수 있냐는 겁니다. First Dhyana 초선입니다. First level as soon as you enter samadhi in first dhyana 첫 단계, 여러분이 초선 삼매에 들자마자, you are able to open your heavenly eye 여러분은 천안을 뜰 수 있습니다. 오케이. Your heavenly eye enables you to see down to the yin world as up to the heavens 여러분의 천안은 여러분이 아래의 음의 세계부터 위의 천상들까지 보게 해줍니다. So far so good 지금까지 괜찮습니까? ok 오케이? It’s no big deal 별로 큰 일이 아닙니다. you know, it’s natural, it’s natural development 알다시피 이건 자연스러운 발전입니다. You don’t have to be greedy 욕심을 내면 안 됩니다. If it happened and you see it, big deal 만약 그런 일이 생겨서 여러분이 보면 별일 아닙니다. 오케이? As I said, don’t be attached to it 내가 말했듯이, 거기에 집착하지 마십시오. It happens naturally 그런 일은 자연스럽게 생깁니다. 오케이? Don’t think it’s a cool thing 그게 멋진 거라고 생각하지 마십시오. It’s nothing at all 그건 전혀 아무것도 아닙니다. alright 알겠습니까? It’s a natural evolution of your meditation skills 그건 여러분 명상 기술의 자연스러운 진화입니다. There’s nothing to be proud of 자랑스러워할 거 없습니다. 오케이. Because if you are not attached to these states and then you continue progress, you can continue to progress 여러분이 이런 경계에 집착하지 않으면 여러분은 계속해서 진전할 수 있기 때문입니다. But once you attach to these states you stop progressing 하지만 일단 여러분이 이 경계에 집착하면 진전을 멈춥니다. And you say oh it’s so cool, I want to enter samadhi and see what’s happening down there 여러분이 ‘오, 멋진데, 삼매에 들어서 거기 아래에 뭐가 일어나는지 봐야겠어’라고 합니다. What happened with my neighbor just died, I wonder did he go down there ‘죽은 지 얼마 안 된 이웃에게 무슨 일이 일어났을까, 그가 저 아래로 갔는지 궁금하군.’ You don’t like your neighbor. yes, no right 여러분은 이웃을 좋아하지 않습니다, 맞습니까, 아닙니까, 맞습니까? You don’t like your neighbor 여러분은 이웃을 좋아하지 않습니다. 

My neighbor, I know what happens with every night I can smell the intense garlic when they cook 내 이웃은, 나는 매일 밤마다 그들이 요리할 때 강렬한 마늘 냄새를 맡을 수 있습니다. Every single night 매일 밤마다 말입니다. 허헣헣 And it’s unbearable 참을 수가 없습니다. anyway. ok. don’t do that 어쨌든, 오케이 그러지 마십시오. because if you do that, you spend all day all night looking at, and you know at your TV instead of meditating and doing something constructive your life 왜냐하면 여러분이 그러면 여러분은 온 낮과 밤을 명상이나 여러분 삶에 건설적인 무언가를 하는 대신 티비를 쳐다보는 겁니다. Alright 알겠습니까? so anyway it’s no big deal 아무튼 그건 별로 큰 일이 아닙니다. It’s a natural evolution, natural development 그건 자연스러운 진화, 자연스러운 발전입니다. ok? It’s no big deal for us. OK 우리에게 그건 별로 큰 일이 아닙니다, 오케이? yes maam 네, 여자분. and if you ever, excuse me, if any of you ever can see the super lotto numbers, give me a call 그리고 만약 여러분이, 실례합니다, 여러분 중 누구라도 수퍼로또 번호를 볼 수 있다면 전화 주십시오. She says a friend she knows that a friend, a neighbor who is it 그녀가 말하길, 그녀가 친구 한 명, 근처 사는 사람을 안다고 합니다, 그게 누구입니까? he came here once 그가 여기 한 번 왔었다고 합니다. and she knows someone a guy, right? who says he can see the ghosts 귀신을 볼 수 있다고 말하는 남자 한 명을 안다고 합니다. That’s why he would get a bowl of rice and offer it to the ghost because he sees them and when he offers it the ghost surrounds him 그래서 그가 밥 한 공기를 얻어서 귀신에게 제공한다고 합니다. 왜냐하면 그는 그들을 볼 수 있고 그가 그걸 제공할 때, 귀신이 그를 둘러싼다고 합니다. ok. angry or happy 오케이 화 냈습니까 혹은 행복해 했습니까? You feed them a steak, they can’t either 스테이크를 줘도 먹을 수 없습니다. maybe lobster 랍스터는 아마 먹을 수 있을 수도 있습니다. but not steak 하지만 스테이크는 아닙니다. (청중 웃음) These people don’t know 이 사람들은 모릅니다. They see only little and they think it’s so cool 그들은 단지 작은 것들만 보고 그게 멋지다고 생각합니다. If you give them a bowl of rice like that, at least give them some meat or fish or something 여러분이 그들에게 그렇게 밥 한 공기를 주면 적어도 고기나 생선이나 어떤 걸 줘야 합니다. 

Won’t you 안 그렇습니까? I can’t swallow a bowl of rice 난 밥 한 공기를 삼킬 수 없습니다. Jesus, it’s so impolite 맙소사 너무 무례합니다. Can you imagine invite someone over to eat and you say here is a bowl of rice, eat it 누군가를 먹으라고 초대해놓고 여기 밥 한 공기, 먹어!, 라고 한다고 상상해보십시오! yes or no 안 그렇습니까. it’s just a common sense 이건 그냥 상식입니다. common sense in hospitality 환대에 관한 상식입니다. at least give them a bowl of rice, and you know vegetables and some salty dishes and dessert, a cake 밥 한 공기를 주고 그리고 적어도 채소 아니면 간기 있는 음식 그리고 디저트, 케잌 말입니다. I’m just kidding 농답입니다. So when he gives a bowl of rice to these ghosts, they cannot eat. unfortunately 그래서 그가 이 귀신들에게 밥 한 공기를 주면 불행히도 그들은 먹을 수 없습니다. 오케이. And that’s why when he says come to my house, yeah. I would not invite the ghosts back to my house 나는 내 집으로 귀신들을 초대하지 않을 겁니다. not even my temple 내 절에도 말입니다. I said please go to the other temples. my temple is very ugly. not worthy of you 부디 다른 절로 가십시오, 내 절은 아주 못 생기고 당신이 올 만한 가치가 없습니다. ok. please go to the bigger temple 오케이, 부디 더 큰 절로 가십시오. There’s a big one. many big ones 저기 큰 절, 큰 절들이 많이 있습니다. one of them are Chinese 그 중 하나는 중국 절입니다. they serve Chinese food 그들이 중국 음식을 내줍니다. Vietnamese temple, a little bit further 약간 더 멀리 베트남 절도 있습니다. ok. so anyway so it’s true 오케이 그래서 아무튼 그건 진짭니다, it’s true that when you meditate, your heavenly eye, you open your spiritual eye, you can see these ghosts 여러분이 명상하면, 천안, 여러분은 영적인 눈을 떠서 이런 귀신들을 볼 수 있단 건 진짭니다. ok? but then they are proud of it. they think it’s a cool thing 오케이 하지만 그들은 그걸 자랑스러워 하고 그게 멋지다고 생각합니다. But if I meditate, I would rather see the gods coming and making heavenly offerings 하지만 내가 명상하면 나는 신들이 와서 천상의 공양을 하는 걸 보는 게 낫습니다. I heard a heavenly food is much better than our food. much much better. far better than our food 내가 듣기로는 천상의 음식은 우리 음식보다 훨씬 , 훨씬 훨씬 좋다고 합니다. ok. so anyway does it help 오케이 그래서 아무튼 그게 도움이 됐습니까? so you believe, too 그래서 당신도 믿습니까, that your friend confirmed it for you that you can see the ghosts, right 당신의 친구가 당신에게 귀신 볼 수 있다고 확인해줬습니까? (답변 안 들림) (마스터) And that delusional 그리고 그건 망상적입니다. ok but you know he might be 오케이 하지만 당신도 알지만 그가 (뭘 피웠을) 수도 있습니다 (코에 손 대고 들이킴) I have a disciple who does that and she can see things immediately 내게도 그걸 하는 제자가 있는데 그녀는 즉시 그것들을 볼 수 있습니다. It works 효과가 있습니다. Anyway. any other questions 아무튼 다른 질문 있습니까? ok. so it’s a common place thing 아무튼 그건 공통적인 겁니다. It’s no big deal at all 전혀 큰 일이 아닙니다. you know it’s bound to happen when you meditate 여러분 그건 여러분이 명상하면 반드시 일어나게 될 일입니다. ok it will happen 오케이 그런 일이 생길 겁니다. Don’t be afraid 두려워하지 마십시오. Why should you be afraid 왜 두려워 해야만 합니까? They are with you all this time 이미 내내 여러분과 함께 있었습니다. Now you begin to see also and you get afraid 이제야 보기 시작하고 무서워합니까? come on, don’t be ridiculous 이봐요, 어리석게 굴지 마십시오. It’s no need to be afraid 무서워할 필요 없습니다. no need to be excited 흥분할 필요 없습니다. It’s just there 그냥 거기 있습니다. We are sharing this space. We are sharing the space with the ghosts 우리가 그 귀신들과 공간을 공유하는 중입니다. ok. so for example, people who come here they see the ghosts walking of different shapes 오케이 그래서 예를 들어서 여기 오는 사람들은 귀신들이 다른 생김새로 걸어다니는 걸 봅니다. I think I heard it’s a woman walking out the door as soon as I started speaking Dharma something like that 내 생각엔 한 여자가 내가 법문을 시작하자마자 문 밖으로 걸어나갔다는 그런 걸 들었습니다. ok. or some other people saw angels and guan yin flying stuff like that 오 그리고 어떤 다른 사람들은 천사와 관음보살님이 날아다니는 그런 걸 봤다고 합니다. It’s common place 그런 건 흔합니다. It’s no big deal 큰 일 아닙니다. Don’t be impressed 감명 받지 마십시오. It’s no big deal 벼롤 큰 일 아닙니다. 오케이. The main thing about the meditation is you 참선에서 주된 것은 당신입니다. The purpose of meditation is to help you open your mind 참선의 목적은 여러분의 마음을 열도록 여러분을 돕는 것입니다. And with opening your mind, opening your wisdom makes you a better and happier person 그리고 여러분 마음을 여는 것으로 여러분의 지혜를 열어 여러분이 더 좋고 행복한 사람이 되게 만듭니다. alright 알겠습니까? That’s why we teach you meditation 그래서 우리가 여러분에게 명상을 가르칩니다. alright      

when I, a few weeks ago, maybe a couple of weeks ago on our Vietnamese TV program I talked about the demonic states 몇 주 전에 내가 우리 베트남 티비 프로그램에서 마의 경계에 관해 얘기했습니다. The English translation, the English explanation is demonic States 영어 번역, 영어적 설명은 마의 경계입니다. But actually it comes from Chinese 하지만 사실 이건 중국어로부터 왔습니다 because it’s no clear no good translation for the Chinese expression 조호루모, 이건 중국어 표현 주화입마의 명확하고 좋은 번역이 아닙니다. 조호 meaning that the fire runs away and that’s why the demons enter 주화는, 그 뜻은 불이 사라져서 마가 들어온다는 겁니다. That’s what the Chinese phrase means 그게 그 중국어 문구가 의미하는 바입니다. ok and the reason why I brought it up is because the Vietnamese a lot of these people they meditate and they encounter these demonic states 오케이 그리고 내가 이걸 꺼내는 이유는 베트남 사람들, 많은 사람들이 명상을 하고 이런 마의 경계를 맞닥뜨립니다. quite often 꽤 자주 말입니다. ok and that’s why they tell each other don’t meditate 오케이 그래서 그들이 서로에게 명상하지 말라고 말합니다. do something else but don’t meditate 다른 걸 하되 명상은 하지 말라고 말입니다. they said reciting buddha’s name, but don’t meditate. ok, recite mantras 그들은 부처님 명호를 외우지만 명상은 하지 말라고, 만트라를 외우거나 하라고 합니다. And that’s very very unwise 그건 아주 아주 현명하지 못합니다. because you recite the buddha’s name, recite mantras, you still can enter demonic states 왜냐하면 여러분이 염불을 하거나 만트라를 외워도 여러분은 여전히 마의 경계에 들어갈 수 있습니다. actually you recite mantras much easier 사실 여러분이 만트라를 외우면 더 쉽습니다. ok. It’s a common place 오케이 그건 흔한 겁니다. There’s nothing to worry about 걱정할 건 없습니다. It happens not only to the Vietnamese but happens to the Chinese, anyone who meditates 그건 베트남 사람들 뿐만 아니라 중국인들, 명상을 하는 누구나에게 일어납니다. They all are vulnerable to it 그들 모두 거기에 대해 취약합니다. ok. So what’s the big deal 그래서 그게 뭐가 큰일이랍니까. it’s because once enter the second dhyana or higher then your body emits light 일단 이선이나 그 이상에 들면 여러분의 몸은 빛을 발하기 때문입니다. ok. this light here that you emit especially when you enter second Dhyana 오케이 여기 이 빛은 특히 여러분이 이선에 들었을 때 발합니다 and if you open your spiritual eye you can see it 그리고 여러분이 영적인 눈을 뜨면 그걸 볼 수 있습니다. it’s not uncommon to see it 그걸 보는 건 드문 일이 아닙니다. ok. for example our relics 예를 들어 우리 사리들, ok. they emit light 그들은 빛을 발합니다. so some of the people they can see it 그래서 어떤 사람들은 그걸 볼 수 있습니다. they can see it very far away 아주 멀리서 볼 수 있습니다. They see, for example, the temple emits light 예를 들어 절이 빛을 발하는 걸 그들이 봅니다. That’s why they come 그래서 그들이 옵니다. They are trying to investigate why there’s a light coming from here 그들은 여기서부터 빛이 왜 오는 건지 조사하려고 합니다. ok. so it’s no big deal 오케이 그러니 별로 큰 일이 아닙니다. ok. so when you enter second dhyana and higher 오케이 그래서 여러분이 이선이나 그 이상에 들면. First dhyana, too but second dhyana is much brighter. You emit light 초선도 빛을 발하지만 이선이 훨씬 더 밝습니다. 여러분은 빛을 발합니다. ok. so far so good 오케이 지금까지 괜찮습니까? ok and most of you are able to enter second dhyana or above already 오케이 그리고 여러분 중 대부분은 이선 혹은 그 이상에 이미 들 수 있습니다. 오케이? any questions 질문 있습니까? and when that happens, you emit light the demon king sees your light 그리고 그런 이링 일어나면, 여러분이 빛을 말하고 마왕이 여러분의 빛을 봅니다. ok. the demon king lives in the heaven 오케이 마왕은 천상에서 삽니다. so you are so bright they can see you 그래서 여러분이 너무 환해서 그들이 여러분을 볼 수 있습니다. Eventually you will have problems 결국 여러분에겐 문제가 생길 겁니다. either you meditate you say no I don’t want to enter Samadhi then you don’t have any problem 또는 여러분이 명상하며 ‘아뇨 전 삼매에 들고 싶지 않아요’라고 한다면 아무런 문제가 없습니다. but when you enter samadhi you draw attention 하지만 여러분이 삼매에 들면 이목을 끕니다. ok. just like you drive on the freeway at hundred miles weaving through the traffic 그건 여러분이 고속도로에서 100마일로 누비듯이 통행하며 운전하는 것과 마찬가지입니다. ok. you will get notice 오케이 결국 여러분은 주의를 끌 겁니다. ok? Demon king has only one purpose, is to kill you 마왕에겐 오직 한 가지 목적만 있습니다. 여러분을 죽이는 겁니다. That’s it 바로 그겁니다. Harm you, kill you 여러분을 해치고 여러분을 죽입니다. only one reason 단 한 가지 이유입니다. His only purpose in life is to harm you ok 그의 삶의 유일한 목적은 여러분을 해치는 겁니다, 오케이? alright 알겠습니까? and so the pain you experienced from crossing your legs is nothing compared to the pain the demon king would inflict upon you 그래서 여러분이 결가부좌로 경험하는 통증은 마왕이 여러분에게 일으킬 수 있는 통증에 비하자면 아무것도 아닙니다. (청중: harm more people 더 많은 사람들을 해치려고요) harm more people, how 더 많은 사람들을 해친다, 어떻게 말입니까? (청중 안 들림) (마스터) To scare you from meditating 여러분이 명상하는 걸 두렵게 하기 위해서. There are others from meditating 명상 말고 다른 게 있습니다. sounds familiar 친숙한 소리입니까? That is why the Vietnamese, the Chinese and those people there, don’t meditate 그래서 베트남 사람들, 중국인들, 그런 사람들이 명상하지 않습니다, don’t meditate. recite the Buddha’s name instead 명상하지 않고 대신 부처님 명호를 외웁니다. and that’s why 그 이유 때문입니다. Because meditation is the best way to beat them 명상은 그들을 패주는 최상의 방법이기 때문입니다. That’s why they want to stop all of you from meditating 그래서 그들이 여러분 모두가 명상을 그만두게 하고 싶어합니다. That’s why 그 이유 때문입니다. Can you imagine. Let’s say you meditate you come here Lu mountain temple on Saturday morning 상상해보십시오, 여러분이 여기 노산사에 토요일 아침에 와서 명상한다고 해봅시다 and look over your neighbor and say this guy doesn’t seem normal 그리고 여러분 주변을 보고 이 사람 정상으로 보이지 않는군, 이라고 말합니다. That’s why the demons can come in 그래서 마들이 들어올 수 있습니다. If your house is well lit, the demons cannot come in 만약 여러분 집이 불이 잘 켜져 있으면 마가 들어올 수 없습니다. It’s that simple. ok 그만큼 간단합니다, 오케이. so instead of being scared like the Vietnamese, the Chinese to tell each other don’t meditate meaning keep our house dark 그래서 베트남 사람들, 중국 사람들처럼 서로 명상하지 말라고 겁 먹는 대신에, 그건 집을 계속 어둡게 두라는 말입니다. ok. then they come and go, you don’t even know 그러면 그들이 오고 가도 여러분은 알지도 못합니다. alright. so when you meditate you do it properly  알겠습니까, 여러분이 명상할 때 바르게 한다면 you won’t have that problem 그런 문제가 없을 겁니다. no only the proper methodology, what is the proper methodology 바른 방법론 뿐만 아니라, 바른 방법론이 뭡니까. It is the proper, the proper knowledge, the proper way to meditate 그건 바른 지식, 명상하는 바른 길입니다. ok? You have to be trained to have the proper fundamentals of meditation 오케이? 여러분은 명상의 바른 기초를 갖도록 훈련받아야만 합니다. The reason the Vietnamese meditation students overwhelming majority of them don’t have the proper foundation 베트남 명상 학생들의 압도적 다수는 바른 기반이 없습니다. They have the wrong foundation 그들은 잘못된 기반을 갖고 있습니다. That’ why they are susceptible to demonic states, to the demons attack 그래서 그들이 마의 경계, 마의 공격에 걸리기 쉽습니다 and the demons are fooling around with them 그리고 마들이 주변에서 그들을 농락합니다. ok and no.2 is another reason why it happens is, why? you don’t know? you should know 오케이 그리고 이번은, 그런 일이 생기는 또다른 이유는, 왜입니까? 모릅니까? 알아야 합니다. Why do your students go astray 왜 당신의 학생들이 길을 잃습니까? (청중: They are distracted 그들이 흐트러져서요) (마스터) They are distracted. what else 그들이 흐트러진다, 그 외에는? why 왜 그렇습니까? (청중: unmotivated 동기 부여가 되지 않아서요) (마스터) unmotivated. what else 동기 부여가 안 된다, 그 외에는? anyone 누구 없습니까? They don’t listen 그들은 듣지 않습니다. you tell them to do something, they don’t listen 여러분이 그들에게 뭘 하라고 말하면 그들은 듣지 않습니다. That’s why you get in trouble 그래서 여러분이 곤경에 처하는 겁니다. that’s why 그래서입니다. that’s the no.2 reason why they get in trouble 그게 그들이 곤경에 처하는 두 번째 이유입니다. no.1 is that you have the wrong fundamentals 첫 번째는 여러분이 잘못된 기반을 갖고 있습니다, you are very very vulnerable 여러분은 아주 아주 취약합니다. no.2, even if you have the right fundamentals, they can fool you 두 번째는 여러분이 바른 기반을 갖고 있더라도 그들이 여러분을 농락할 수 있습니다. And that’s when you need to listen 그럴 때 여러분이 들어야만 합니다. So that’s the requirement for practicing chan in our lineage. In the mahayana chan, ok 그래서 그게 우리 전통의 챤 수행, 대승 챤 수행의 필요조건입니다. If you don’t listen, we encourage you to leave 여러분이 듣지 않는다면, 우리는 여러분이 떠나게끔 장려합니다. I’m serious about it 난 진지합니다. In the Chinese Chan places, they don’t give you instructions 중국식 챤 (수행) 장소에서는 여러분에게 지침을 주지 않습니다. In the Chinese places when they teach Chan meditation you go there you follow what everyone is doing 중국식 수행처에서는 챤 명상을 가르쳐주면, 여러분은 거기 가서 모두가 하는 것을 따라합니다. And you don’t, you are basically not welcome anymore 그리고 여러분이 하지 않으면 여러분은 더 이상 환영받지 못합니다. In America, it doesn’t work like that 미국에서는 그런 식으로 하지 않습니다. and this modern day you cannot do that anymore 그리고 이런 현대에는 여러분은 더 이상 그렇게 할 수 없습니다. Even in China, they can’t do that anymore 중국에서조차 그렇게 더 이상 할 수 없습니다. ok. because no one can we are becoming a society that says sell it to me, it has to make sense to me before I do it 오케이, 왜냐하면 아무도 할 수 없기 때문입니다. 우리는 ‘내게 팔아봐, 내가 그걸 하기 전에 그게 나한테 말이 돼야 해’라고 말하는 사회가 되어가고 있습니다. So that’s why in Chan meditation now in a American Chan, we explain a lot more to you 그래서 챤 명상, 이제 우리 미국 챤에서는 우리는 여러분에게 훨씬 많은 걸 설명합니다. But ultimately if you don’t listen you don’t follow instructions, we encourage you to leave 하지만 최종적으로 여러분이 지침을 듣지, 따르지 않으면, 우리는 여러분에게 떠날 것을 장려합니다. Because it’s very dangerous. we go very fast 왜냐하면 위험하기 때문입니다. 우리는 매우 빠르게 갑니다. you have to listen to the instructions 여러분은 지침을 들어야만 합니다. ok. any questions 오케이, 다른 질문 있습니까? that is why I speak from experience 그래서 나는 경험에서부터 말하는 겁니다. His half is my master’s, that system, the disciple of that system 그의 절반은 내 스승님의, 그쪽 체계의 제자였습니다. They are the direct teacher, his direct teachers 그들이 그의 직접적인 선생님이었습니다. Whereas he only came here to learn a little bit from me 반면 그는 여기서 나로부터 조금 배우려고 왔습니다. even though he made a progress, a lot of progress but he never really listen to me 그가 많은 진전을 했어도 그는 절대 내 말을 듣지 않았습니다.
