good morning, everyone 모두들 좋은 아침입니다. Today we have two Bhikshuni guests to the temple 오늘 두 명의 비구니 손님이 절에 계십니다. Welcome them 그들을 환영해 주십시오. That’s also auspicious 또 상서로운 일이 있습니다. Because it also helps a grandmother of my disciple, a mother and grandmother of my disciple just passed away a few days ago 왜냐하면, 며칠 전에 돌아가신 내 제자의 할머니를 도와주기 때문입니다. So hopefully we can use, help them, helping send them to the pureland 그래서 우리가 그들을 정토에 보내는 걸 도울 수 있길 바랍니다. We also would like to welcome the family, her family, her offsprings, children and grandchildren who made the effort to come here today to participate in this ceremony to help her funeral 우리는 오늘 여기 와서 그녀의 장례를 돕기 위해 이 의식에 참여하는 수고를 해준 그 가족들, 그녀의 가족, 그녀의 후손들, 아이들과 손주를 환영하고자 합니다 She lived to be 100 years old, right 그녀는 거의 100살까지 살았습니다, 맞습니까?
(중국어 청중) That’s a very good age 아주 좋은 나이 입니다. very good. very impressive 아주 좋습니다, 인상적입니다. she lived in China, she passed away in China 그녀는 중국에서 살았고 중국에서 돌아가셨습니다. How is she, she was ill when she passed away 그녀는 어땠습니까, 그녀가 죽을 때 병으로 아팠습니까?
(마스터랑 중국어 문답) So that tells you she know that she’s leaving that’s why she didn’t want to burden herself with food 그건 그녀가 떠날 거란 걸 그녀가 알았다는 걸 말해줍니다. 그래서 그녀는 스스로를 음식으로 짐을 지고 싶지 않았습니다. That’s a very very good sign 그건 아주 아주 좋은 신호입니다. ok. she has a very clear head 그녀는 아주 명료한 머리를 가지고 있습니다. ok.
(중국어 청중) (마스터) and she also adds that, rujing also adds that she didn’t lose her temper and she passed away very peaceful 그리고 루징이 덧붙이길 그녀가 성질을 잃지 않고 아주 평화롭게 죽었다고 합니다.
That matters 그건 중요합니다. It’s very very good 아주 아주 좋습니다. How did she live, how was her life like 그녀가 어떻게 살았습니가, 그녀의 삶은 어땠습니까? anyone would like to tell about it 누구 거기에 대해 말하고픈 사람 있습니까? What did she do 그녀는 무얼 했습니까? Did she go to work 그녀는 일을 하러 갔습니까?

For your information, she’s right now at the stage she’s destined to go to the heavens 참고로 그녀는 지금 천상으로 가려는 단계에 있습니다.
You don’t do anything. ok. within seven weeks she will go to the heavens 여러분이 아무것도 하지 않으면, 오케이, 7주 안에 그녀는 천상으로 갈 겁니다. ok. now those of you who don’t know much about Buddhism, the Asians have this tradition of 49 day ceremony 오케이, 지금 불교에 대해서 많이 알지 못하는 여러분, 아시안들에게는 이런 49재라는 전통이 있습니다 that because the Buddhsits and the Asian Buddhists believe 왜냐하면 불자들, 그리고 아시안 불자들은 that during after death there’s a 49 day (모름, 현지스님이 great experience 라는데 분명치 않음) 왜냐하면 죽음 후에 49재라는 기간이 있는데, 이 기간 동안 where you get the chance to where this time during this time period the decisions would be made where the deceased go next, which body would take on next 이 기간 동안 죽은 이가 다음에 어디로 갈지, 어느 몸을 가질지 그 결정이 내려진다고 믿습니다. ok. That is why the Asians traditionally would go to the temple and ask for the temple’s help in generating blessings 그래서 아시안들은 전통적으로 절에 가서 복을 짓기 위해 절의 도움을 요청하려 합니다 so that we can affect the good rebirth for the deceased 우리가 죽은 이의 좋은 왕생에 영향을 줄 수 있도록 하기 위해서 말입니다. That’s Asian traditon. ok 그게 아시안의 전통입니다, 오케이.
so you don’t have 49 days to do it 그래서 여러분(미국인)에겐 그걸 하는 49재가 없습니다. So during this 49 days traditionally now the Asians only became a bunch of ceremonies as well 그래서 이 49재 동안에 전통적으로, 지금의 아시안들은 수두룩한 의식들이 되었습니다, you recite Sutras and chant Sutras and chant Buddha’s name that’s it 여러분은 경을 외고, 부처님 명호를 낭송합니다.
So it’s more or less a tradition thing than understanding truly what happens 그래서 그건 진정으로 무슨 일이 생기는지 이해하기 보다는 그저 전통적인 것일 뿐입니다. Traditionally people simply focused on ceremony aspect 전통적으로 사람들은 단순히 의식적인 측면에만 집중했습니다. because they want to show that you folks want to show someone that you are doing something in your memory of the your loved one who passed away 왜냐하면 누군가에게 여러분이 사랑하는 사람을 기리기 위해 무언가를 하고 있다는 걸 보여주고 싶어하기 때문입니다. but for us Buddhists we understand the timing of the essence 하지만 우리 불자들은 본질적인 시간을 이해합니다. because we only have 49 days to try to help the deceased, ok 왜냐하면 우리에겐 죽은 이들을 돕기 위해서 49일만이 있기 때문입니다. (마스터) In our Mahayana sutras, in earth store sutra, the Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha explains that so your reference refer to the earth store sutra 우리의 대승 경전에서, 지장경에서, 석가모니 부처님께서 설명하셨습니다. 그러니 지장경을 참조하십시오. So during this 49 days period, Shakyamuni Buddha says that the deceased gets to meet with the king yama, the official down stair 그래서 석가모니 부처님께서 말씀하시길, 이 49일 동안 죽은 이는 저 아래의 관료인 염라대왕을 만나게 됩니다. that who decides which body to give to get the next incarnation 염라대왕은 다음 번의 모습에서 어떤 몸을 줄지 결정합니다. So the Buddhist believes that something called reincarnationwhere you actually change your bodies everytime you die 불자들은 윤회라는 것을 믿습니다. 여러분은 사실 죽을 때마다 여러분의 몸을 바꿉니다. So the official who decides that, this judge who decides that, his name is called king yama 그래서 그걸 결정하는 관료, 판관의 이름은 염라대왕이라고 불립니다. And this king here, he’s downstair 여기 이 왕은 지하에 있습니다. He’s a judge, looks at the record of the deceased and determines the good and bad 그는 판관으로 죽은 이의 기록을 보고 선과 악을 결정합니다. And he tells this is good deeds versus bad deeds 그는 이게 선행이고 악행이라고 말합니다. So good deeds are prevail then the deceased gets some much better body next time around 그래서 선행이 더 우세하다면 죽은 이는 다음번에 더 좋은 몸을 얻습니다, 오케이? That’s how that works 그런 식으로 작동합니다. Because this is why we cultivate, you know. why we recite the Buddha’s name, why we meditate 왜냐면 이렇기 때문에 우리가 수행을 하고, 염불을 하고, 명상을 합니다 because people die we do have a chance to help them out 사람들이 죽으면 우리가 그들을 돕기 위한 기회가 있습니다. ok. so. So the way is done오케이, 그래서 그런 식으로 행해집니다.
It’s a basically is that your next life, if you want to have a better next life 기본적으로 여러분이 다음생에, 만약 여러분이 더 나은 생을 갖길 원한다면 then you have to have a lot of blessings, simple is that 그러면 여러분에겐 아주 많은 복이 있어야만 합니다, 단순히 그것입니다. So what happens is that during the 49 days period 그래서 49재 기간 동안에 무슨 일이 생기냐면 primarily the Buddhists what we do is trying to generate a lot of blessings on behalf of the deceased, ok 최우선으로 우리 불자들이 하는 일은 죽은 이를 위해서 아주 많은 복을 지으려고 합니다. After 49 days, they take on new body, that’s it 49일 후에, 그들이 새로운 몸을 얻습니다, 그게 답니다. It’s very hard to help them 그들을 돕기란 매우 힘듭니다. Very difficult 아주 어렵습니다. Takes on the body takes long long time 몸을 얻기란 아주 아주 긴 시간이 걸립니다. It’s much more difficult to help 돕기 훨씬 더 어렵습니다. Your grand mother, this lady passed away 당신의 할머니, 이 여자분이 돌아가셨습니다. She’s right now, here on balance that she has a good life 그녀는 지금 모든 것을 고려해보았을 때 선한 삶을 살았습니다.
Therefore if we don’t do anything at all, nothing changes 그러므로 만약 우리가 전혀 아무것도 하지 않아서 아무것도 바뀌지 않는다면 then she will go to the heavens 그러면 그녀는 천상으로 갈 겁니다 because she did a very good life, very decent life 왜냐하면 그녀는 아주 좋은, 버젓한 삶을 살았기 때문입니다. She would be reborn in the lower heavens 그녀는 낮은 단계의 천상에서 태어날 겁니다. So clearly the more blessings we generate during this 49 days period the better higher heavens she will rise 그래서 명백히도 우리가 이 49재 기간 동안 더 많은 복을 지으면 그녀는 더 좋고 높은 천상으로 올라갈 겁니다. On the other hand, during this time period if we do bad things on her behalf, now she will lose blessings that she will fall to the lower realm 반면에 이 기간 동안 우리가 그녀를 대신 해서 악한 것을 한다면, 이제 그녀는 복을 잃고 낮은 법계로 떨어질 겁니다.

we try to give her, bring her to the best place, it’s called pureland, western bliss pureland 우리가 그녀에게 주려 하는, 그녀는 데려가려 하는 최고의 장소는 정토, 서방 극락 정토라고 불립니다. Because right now your mother, grandmother she can be reborn in the heaven 왜냐하면 지금 당신의 어머니, 할머니는 천상에서 태어날 수 있습니다, there can have a good heavenly existence 그곳에서 좋은 천상의 존재로 있을 수 있습니다. but eventually when her blessings run out she will fall to the lower realm 하지만 결국 그녀의 복이 다하면 그녀는 더 낮은 법계로 떨어질 겁니다,
ok. And that’s why all these blessings here we generate for her to give her, she can have, she is temporarily happy but when her blessings run out, fall 그래서 여기서 우리가 그녀에게 주기 위해 짓는 이 모든 복들을 그녀가 가지고 일시적으로 행복하지만 그녀의 복이 다하면, 떨어집니다. That’s why the Buddhists (모름) the best place is pureland 그래서 불자들에게 최고의 장소는 정토입니다. where if she makes it to the pureland, there’s a world so far away from we are, then she will have no more suffering 만약 그녀가 정토에 가는 것에 성공한다면, 정토는 우리가 있는 곳으로부터 아주 멀리 있는 세계입니다. 그녀에겐 더이상 괴로움이 없습니다. She will never have to suffer again. ever 그녀는 다시는 괴로움을 겪지 않아도 됩니다. The pureland, the western bliss pure land is 정토, 서방 극락 정토란, if you look at our world milky way as well. In Buddhism, it’s just one world 여러분이 우리 은하를 본다면, 불교에서는 그건 단지 하나의 세계입니다. This western bliss pureland is ten billion world away from our world 이 서방 극락 정토는 우리 세계로부터 100억 세계 멀리가 있습니다. It’s that far away 그만큼 멀리 있습니다. That’s why it requires a lot of blessings to make it there 그래서 거기에 가는 데 성공하려면 아주 많은 복이 필요합니다. The facts are the just like the analogy is that when we wish to travel the further we need to travel, the more expensive. it gets the more money you spent to buy for that airfare 우리가 더 멀리 여행하길 바란다면, 우리가 여행해야 한다면 더 비쌉니다. 비행기표를 사기 위해 더 많은 돈이 든다는 비유와 마찬가지입니다. Similarly you want to be reborn to the western bliss pureland, ten billion worlds away, the amount of blessings must be generated like just incredible, incredible amount of blessings 유사하게 여러분이 백 억 세계 멀리 있는 서방 극락 정토에 왕생하고 싶다면, 믿을 수 없을 만큼의 양의 복을 지어야만 합니다. (현계스님 목소리: karma is just physically impersonal process that it doesn’t like rely on god or king yama or any being to kind of keep tracking implemented 업은 그저 인간 외적의 물리적인 과정으로 천신 혹은 염라대왕 혹은 심어진 업을 계속해서 추적하는 어느 존재에게도 달려있는 것 같지 않습니다. so king yama sort of plays his role but he’s not like responsible for me making karma work 그래서 염라대왕은 일종의 그의 역할을 수행하지만, 그는 내가 업을 짓는 것에 대한 책임이 있지는 않습니까?) In principle, the everything 이치상, 모든 것은, the universal law that is called the cause and effect 보편적인 법칙은 인과라고 불리는 것입니다. that is you plant the cause, plant the seeds then you will get the proper, that you plant the cause then you correspond consequence 여러분이 인을 심으면, 여러분이 씨앗을 심으면 여러분은 적절한 것을 얻을 겁니다, 여러분이 인을 심으면 결과가 거기 부합할 것입니다. meaning, it’s just like farming you plant the seeds for a melon then you get melons eventually 무슨 뜻이냐면, 마치 농사처럼 여러분이 멜론 씨앗을 심으면 여러분이 결국 멜론을 얻는 겁니다. alright 알겠습니까? That’s cause and effects 그게 인과입니다.
When you plant the cause, it’s called you are creating karma 여러분이 인을 심으면, 그걸 여러분이 업을 짓는다고 부릅니다. So the Buddhist word karma is basically you plant the seeds, some kinds of seeds 그래서 불교 용어로 업은 기본적으로 여러분이 씨앗, 어떤 류의 씨앗을 심습니다. 오케이. If you plant the seeds then you will get the corresponding consequence 만약 여러분이 씨앗을 심는다면 여러분이 그에 상응하는 결과를 얻을 겁니다. You don’t need. It happens naturally 여러분은 필요로 하지 않습니다. 자연스럽게 생깁니다. it depends on no one’s decision 누구의 결정에도 의존하지 않습니다. So for example, this lady here 그래서 예를 들어 여기 이 여자분은, overall in her prior life she did more good things than bad things 전반적으로 그녀의 이전의 삶에서 그녀는 나쁜 일보다 선한 일을 더 많이 했습니다. That’s why she has more blessings now overall she has more blessings to go to the heavens 그래서 그녀는 지금 전반적으로 천상에 갈 복이 더 있습니다. Because in the past life, she did good things more than bad things 왜냐하면 전생에서 그녀는 나쁜 일보다 선한 일을 더 많이 했기 때문입니다. She created more good karmas than bad karmas 그녀는 악업보다 선업을 더 지었습니다. (현계스님: We have free will to decide an action which made lengthen or shorten our lifespan and influence that. Is it totally fixed 우리에겐 수명을 늘리거나 줄이거나 하는 행동을 결정하고 거기에 영향을 미치는 자유의지가 있습니다. 그건 완전히 고정된 겁니까?)
(마스터) No, it’s not always fixed 아니, 항상 고정된 건 아니다. you comeback and revisit king yama, he will keep on deciding based on your records 여러분이 돌아가서 염라대왕을 다시 만나면 그가 여러분의 기록에 기초해서 계속 결정을 할 것입니다. well, we are getting side track 어쨌든 우리가 옆길로 샜습니다. So the point here is king yama 여기서의 포인트는 염라대왕입니다.
The second function he also has is he decides which body you are going to take 그가 가진 두 번째 직무는 당신이 어느 몸을 가질지 결정하는 겁니다, So he is the one who decides 그래서 그가 그걸 결정합니다. Because every time you die you had a set of good things, good deeds instead of bad deeds 왜냐면 매번 여러분이 죽을 때마다 여러분에게는 선한 일들, 선행과 악행들이 있습니다. The choice is made for you 여러분에게는 이미 선택이 내려져 있습니다. you have no choice when you fall 여러분이 떨어질 때에는 선택이 없습니다. But for example, this lady, she’s supposed to go to the heavens right 하지만 예를 들어서 이 여자분, 그녀는 천상에 가야 합니다. She may go to become human if she chooses to 만약 그녀가 선택한다면 가서 인간이 될 수도 있습니다. That’s her choice 그건 그녀의 선택입니다. But at this point, she can’t go to the pureland because she does not have enough blessings 하지만 이 지점에서 그녀는 정토에 갈 수 없습니다. 그녀에게는 충분한 복이 있지 않습니다. That’s what we do 그게 우리가 하는 겁니다. Furthermore, if you are better informed, those who are better informed are better blessed 나아가서 여러분이 더 좋은 정보를 충분히 갖고 있다면, 더 좋은 복을 받았습니다. They also have the Mahayana also have the rebirth Dharma 대승에는 또한 왕생법이 있습니다, the rebirth plaque Dharma where you can start accruing rebirth blessing right now 왕생 위패법은 여러분이 지금 당장부터 왕생복을 쌓기 시작할 수 있는 곳입니다.
Why you have to wait until you die for you to accrue blessings 왜 여러분이 복을 쌓기 위패 여러분이 죽을 때까지 기다려야만 합니까. Because you don’t want to wait 여러분을 기다리고 싶지 않기 때문입니다. If you really believe in rebirth to the pureland, you should accrue your rebirth blessings right now when you are alive 만약 여러분이 정토 왕생을 정말로 믿는다면, 여러분은 지금 당장 여러분이 살아있을 때 왕생복을 쌓아야만 합니다 so that when you die you go and send your record that king yama has considered you as a 리저블 rebirth to the pureland 그래서 여러분이 죽으면 여러분이 가서 여러분의 기록을 보내면 염라대왕이 여러분의 정토왕생이 타당하다고 여깁니다.
And not await for rebirth blessings will be generated during the 49 days only 그리고 49재 동안만 왕생복을 지으려고 기다리지 마십시오. That’s the fallacy of the present way of the rebirth, the way the rebirth Dharma is practiced right now by the Asians 그게 현재 아시안들에 이해서 수행되는 왕생법 방식의 오류입니다. That’s why our temple, we strongly urge our faithful to start generate rebirth blessing right now when they are still alive 그래서 우리 절은, 우리는 우리 신도들에게 살아 있을 때 지금 당장 왕생복을 짓기 시작하라고 격려합니다. Do not wait until you die to do that because the 49 days are very short 그걸 하기 위해 여러분이 죽을 때까지 기다리지 마십시오, 왜냐하면 49일은 매우 짧습니다.
