Someone asked the Buddha, what is the supreme asset? How do I attain happiness? What is the supreme sweetness? And what is the supreme life? So What do you think is the supreme asset?

누군가 부처님께 "무엇이 최상의 자산입니까, 어떻게 행복을 얻습니까, 무엇이 최상의 달콤함입니까, 무엇이 최상의 삶입니까?"라고 물었습니다. 그래서 여러분은 무엇이 최상의 자산이라고 생각합니까?

And the asset is something that you can depend on. Something you can accrue. So what is for you the supreme asset? Yes. The son that in the future you can count on, when you get older. Yes? (your good roots) The Buddha said, if you say that your good roots, let me explain it to you, can you count on your good roots? Sometimes you can’t because maybe your good roots don’t measure up.

그래서 뭐가 남았습니까? 최상의 자산의 성질은 무엇입니까? (지혜요) 지혜, 누군가 지혜라고 말했습니다. 여러분, 부처님께선 뭐라고 말씀하셨습니까? 무엇이 최상의 자산입니까? (선근이요) 부처님께서는, 선근이라면, 설명해주겠습니다. 당신은 당신이 선근에 기댈 수 있습니까? 어쩔 때에는 기댈 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 아마 여러분의 선근이 잴 수 없을 수도 있습니다.

What about, what you said earlier? Before somebody said good roots, what was that? Wisdom? Can you account on your wisdom? Can an Araht depend on his wisdom? An Arhat is an sage in Buddhism. Can he count on his wisdom? (absolutely not) No, absolutely not. Because his wisdom is still far short. Yes, he is a sage. His understanding and wisdom is still very limited.

전에 뭐라고 했습니까? 선근이라고 말하기 전에 뭐라고 했습니까? 지혜? 여러분은 지혜에 기댈 수 있습니까? 아라한은 자신의 지혜에 기댈 수 있습니까? 아라한은 불교에서 성자입니다. 아라한은 자기 지혜에 기댈 수 있습니까? (전혀 아뇨) 아닙니다, 전혀 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 아라한의 지혜는 여전히 매우 모자라기 때문입니다. 네, 아라한은 성자입니다만 이해와 지혜는 여전히 매우 제한적입니다.

What is the difference between the Buddhist faith, faith in Buddhism, versus faith in non Buddhist religions or other types of faith? What is the difference? Does anyone know? No one knows? Let me tell you. The non Buddhist faith. It’s blind faith. meaning that if your supreme being said so, you must believe so. You may not argue it. You may not argue and against it. Blind faith. Ok. Just like the group I met a few weeks ago, we met a few weeks ago. They said the bible is the only truth in this universe. The supreme truth in the universe is the bible. Blindly.

What is the Buddhist faith? In contrast, the Buddhist faith is not blind faith. The Buddha said, just because I say so, you should not necessarily believe it. That’s the Buddha said. Just because I said so, you shouldn’t believe it. Blindly. Ok?

불교의 신심은 무엇입니까? 대조적으로 불교의 신심은 맹목적인 믿음이 아닙니다. 부처님께서 말씀하시길, 내가 그렇게 말했다고 해서, 너희가 반드시 그걸 믿어야만 하는 게 아니다,라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그건 부처님의 말씀입니다. 내가 그렇게 말씀하셨다고 해서, 너희가 그렇게 맹목적으로 믿어야 하는 게 아니다,라고 하셨습니다. 오케이.

He said you should use your braind. you should use your brain, your understanding. And if it makes sense, believe. It doesn’t make sense, don’t believe. Even if I say so. Just because it’s tradition, because someone said so, you need to use your brains. Is that clear? Buddhist faith is never blind.

부처님께서는 너희는 머리를 써서, 머리와 이해를 써야 한다, 그리고 그게 말이 되면, 믿어라. 말이 안 되면 믿지 말아라, 내가 그렇게 말했다고, 그게 전통이라고, 누군가가 그렇게 말했다고 가 아니라, 너희는 너희 머리를 써야 한다,라고 말씀하셨습니다. 알겠습니까? 불교의 신심은 전혀 맹목적이지 않습니다.

So what does it mean? Meaning that in Buddhism, your faith, is something that you will verify for yourself. For example, the Buddhism, we teach you about the gods. We teach you about the ghosts. We teach you about the spirits. You know. The Buddha teaches us about so many types of living beings. Including the gods, including the humans. including the ghost. Ok.

그래서 그건 무슨 뜻입니까? 그건 불교에서, 여러분의 신심은 여러분 본인이 증명할 것입니다. 예를 들어서 불교에서 우리는 여러분에게 신에 대해서, 귀신에 대해서, 신령에 대해서 가르칩니다. 부처님께서는 우리에게 신과, 인간과 귀신을 포함한 수많은 종류의 중생에 대해 가르쳐주셨습니다. 오케이.

Although the Buddha said, he teaches about them, Ok. And at first it’s kind of hard to believe. But if you practice Buddhism, you will see those things, you will certify those things to yourself. You will verify for yourself.

부처님께서, 그렇게 말씀하셨지만, 그것들에 대해 가르쳐주셨지만, 처음에는 믿기 힘듭니다. 하지만 여러분이 불교를 수행하면, 여러분은 그런 것들을 볼 것이고 스스로 그걸 확일할 겁니다. 여러분 본인이 확인할 겁니다.

How is that? By following the instruction. Because the Buddhist teaching is that we don’t stress that much about the knowledge. You know that? It’s never about the theory. Buddhism, Mahayana is a little bit different from Hinayana. In Mahayana we teach you how you verify for yourself the Buddhist teachings. questions?

어떻게 그렇게 합니까? 지침을 따름으로써 그렇게 합니다. 왜냐하면 불교의 가르침은, 우리는, 지식에 대해서 그다지 강조하지 않습니다. 여러분 그거 압니까? 불교는 전혀 이론에 대한 게 아닙니다. 대승은, 소승과는 약간 다릅니다. 대승에서, 우리는 여러분이 스스로 불교의 가르침을 확인하는 법을 가르쳐줍니다. 질문?

It’s very important distinction. That’s why in Buddhism, if you recite the Buddha’s name, if you meditate, you will in the future, see the god. You see the ghost. You can see the spirits. Ok. You see all kind of things the Buddha described. Ok. Any problems with that?

그건 매우 중요한 구분입니다. 그래서 불교에서, 여러분이 염불을 하고, 명상을 하면 여러분은 나중에 신을 보고 귀신을 보고 신령을 볼 수 있을 겁니다. 오케이. 여러분은 부처님께서 설명하신 온갖 종류의 것들을 봅니다. 오케이. 거기 관해 문제 있는 사람?

The Buddha also said that you will certify something called a sagehood. If you practice 4 noble truth, you will certify to a sagely position, fruition called Arhatship. When you get there, you see that the self no longer exists. There’s no one. The self is truly empty. So far so good?

부처님께서는 너희가 성자의 과위란 것을 확인할 것이다,라고 말씀하셨습니다. 너희가 사성제를 수행하면, 아라한과라는 성자의 지위, 과외를 확인할 것이다,라고 하셨습니다. 여러분이 거기에 이르게 되면, 더 이상 아상이 존재하지 않는 걸 여러분이 봅니다. 아무도 없습니다. 아상은 정말로 비어있습니다. 지금까지 괜찮습니까?

And his disciples have faith in that. They are certified to arhatship and they truly verify, found out for themselves that there’s no such thing, the ego. So, all the Buddha’s disciples, they verified for themselves already. They verified that the all the Buddha’s teachings are correct. From low leve like us, it’s very not that hard to see ghosts and spirits. To sages like the Arhats or Prateyekabuddha. they see that selflessness. They see something called Nirvana. Ok. It’s not conceptual. They experience it! Is that clear? And to the Bodhisattva, they see what enlightment is like. Ok? They see Buddhas. They see all the Bodhisattvas. They see that all the Mahayana teaching is correct. That’s why the faith in Buddhism, is if you have faith, that’s why ultimately, I believe that, our faith is not blind faith at all.

그의 제자들은 그걸 믿었습니다. 그들은 아라한과를 확인받았고 정말로, 그들 스스로 아상같은 건 없다란 것을 확인을, 발견했습니다. 그래서, 부처님의 모든 제자들은 이미 스스로 확인을 했습니다. 그들은 부처님의 모든 가르침들이 맞다는 것을 확인했습니다. 우리처럼 낮은 단계에서부터 귀신과 신령들을 보기란 그렇게 어렵지 않습니다. 그리고 아라한이나 벽지불 같은 성자들까지 말입니다. 그들은 무아를 봅니다. 그들은 열반이라 부르는 것을 봅니다. 오케이. 그건 개념적인 게 아닙니다. 그들은 그걸 경험합니다! 알겠습니까? 그리고 보살들, 그들은 깨담이란 어떤 건지 봅니다. 오케이? 그들은 부처님을 봅니다. 그들은 모든 보살들을 봅니다. 그들은 대승의 모든 가르침이 맞다는 것을 봅니다. 그래서 불교에 대해 신심은, 만일 여러분이 신심이 있다면 궁극적으로는, 난, 우리의 신심이 전혀 맹목적인 신심이 아니라고 믿습니다.

But if you have faith in Buddhism, in the Triple Jewel, you will find that lifetime after lifetime, you can count on that faith. For instance, you will be taught out of level, will be taught to pray to Guan Yin. Anyone pray to Guan Yin and got some responses? Just me, right? See? We are privileged. (I have) You have? Yes. Anyone pray to medicine master Buddha and has some responses?

하지만 여러분이 불교에, 삼보에 신심이 있다면, 여러분은 세세 생생 거기 기댈 수 있단 걸 발견할 겁니다. 예를 들어서, 여러분은 관음보살님께 기도하라고 배울 겁니다. 누구 관음보살님께 기도하고 감응을 받은 사람? 나뿐입니까? 봤습니까? 우린 특권층입니다. (저도 있어요) 당신도? 네, 누구 약사 부처님께 기도하고 감응 있던 사람?

Very simple. You are in trouble? Call Guan Yin. So many people experienced that. Right? Even my master, Ok. He was always in the trouble, he was about to be sunk, Meaning that a lot of peole on his boat just die. And he prayed to Guan Yin. He said if I‘m meant to survived this so that if I’m meant to propagate Mahayana in the future. He said if that so, please save me and the boat stabilized and never sank. Ok?

아주 단순합니다. 여러분이 곤경에 처했습니까? 관음보살님을 부르십시오. 아주 많은 사람들이 그걸 경험했습니다. 맞습니까? 나의 스승님도 말입니다. 오케이. 그가 항상 곤경에 처했을 때, 그가 가라앉을 뻔했을 때, 내 말은 그의 배에 탄 많은 사람들이 죽을 뻔했습니다. 그가 관음보살님께 기도했습니다. 제가 만일 여기서 살아남아서, 나중에 대승을 전법할 운명이라면, 부디 저를 구해주시고, 배를 안정시켜주시고 가라앉지 않게 하소서,라고 했습니다. 오케이?

That’s the kind of faith you can count on. Always. And all times. Any questions? So far so good? So what does it take to be happy? How can you be happy? How can you be happy? Yes. Let go of things. Something is some kind of hard to let go. Yes? Can you let go of your children? Can you let go of your children? Can you let go? That’s right idea.

여러분이 기댈 수 있는 신심이란 그런 것입니다. 항상, 언제나 말입니다. 질문? 지금까지 괜찮습니까? 그래서 행복하려면 뭐가 필요합니까? 여러분은 어떻게 행복해집니까? 어떻게 행복해질 수 있습니까? 네. 내려놓는 걸로 말입니까? 어떤 건 내려놓기가 힘듭니다, 안 그렇습니까? 여러분은 자식을 내려놓을 수 있습니까? 자식을 내려놓을 수 있습니까? 여러분 그럴 수 있습니까? 맞는 생각입니다.

Buddha said in order for you to be happier, you have to cultivate the orthodox Dharma. That’s part of it is to let go. We have to let go of our children slowly. Agree? Yes? Eventually once they grow up, they will leave us anyway. They will follow their husband. Ok? So far so good?

부처님께선, 너희가 더 행복해지려면 정법을 수행해야만 한다, 고 말씀하셨습니다. 내려놓는 건 그 일부입니다. 우리는 천천히 자식들을 내려놔야만 합니다. 동의합니까, 그렇습니까? 결국 일단 걔네가 자라고 나면 어찌 됐건 간에 우릴 떠날 겁니다. 자기 남편을 따라갈 겁니다. 오케이? 지금까지 괜찮습니까?

What is the supreme sweetness? Your boyfriend’s words, your boyfriend’s promises. Yes? Supreme sweetness. The promises from your boyfriend. Yes? No? Your girlfriend? What is the supreme sweetness? What do you think? That is so sweet that it is sweeter, it’s better than sugar cane juice, honeybee, sweeter than anything. (Vietnamese) She said that the sweet dew, especially you speak Dharma, the Dharma of the Buddha, analogy of speaking Dharma is like sweet dew.

무엇이 최상의 달콤함입니까? 여러분의 남자 친구가 한 말들, 약속들입니까? 그렇습니까? 네? 최상의 달콤함 말입니다. 여러분 남자 친구가 한 약속들, 맞습니까? 아닙니까? 여자 친구? 무엇이 최상의 달콤함입니까? 어떻게 생각합니까? 너무 달콤해서, 사탕수수 주스나, 벌꿀보다 더 낫고 달콤한 것, 어느 것보다도 달콤한 것 말입니다. (베트남어) 그녀가 감로수, 특히 설법할 때, 부처님의 설법을 할 때, 법을 설하는 것이 감로와도 같다고 비유로 말했습니다.

It’s sweet but is that the sweetest? Uh, oh. Still not the supreme sweetness. Would you like to know what is the supreme sweetness? (Vietnamese) She said speaking a Dharma. The supreme sweetness the Buddha said is the truth. It’s nothing sweeter than the truth.Agree, or disagree? I didn’t say that the truth is not bitter. I only say about it’s so so sweet. Agree?

네 그건 달콤합니다만, 그게 가장 달콤한 겁니까? 어어, 여전히 최상의 달콤함은 아닙니다. 여러분 무엇이 최상의 달콤함인지 압니까? (베트남어) 그녀가 말하길, 법을 설하는 것이라고 했습니다. 부처님께서는 최상의 달콤한은 진실이라고 하셨습니다. 어느 것도 진실보다 달콤하지 않습니다. 동의합니까, 반대합니까? 난 진실이 씁쓸하지 않다고는 말하지 않았습니다. 난 단지 그게 아주 아주 달콤하다고 말했습니다. 동의합니까?

The truth can be very bitter sometimes, but it’s very sweet. At least that’s what the Buddha said. I havent’ verified that yet. I haven’t not been able to verify myself that the truth is the sweetest thing.

진실은 어쩔 때에는 아주 씁쓸할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 아주 달콤합니다. 최소한 부처님께서는 그렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 난 아직 그걸 확인하지 않았습니다. 아직 진실이 가장 달콤하단 걸 스스로 확인하지 못합니다.

Finally, what is the supreme lifestyle? Supreme lifestyle. Tax looks at me and said you are it. Leaving home life, this is the supreme lifestyle, Tax seems to think, seems to imply. A-ha. Yes? Thank you very much, but it isn’t. What is supreme lifestyle to you? (rock and roll stars) What else? It could be, would you like to be a god? Emperor? What is the supreme lifestyle? (the simplest) The simpliest. (sigh) Is it ok even though you have the simple life style, is it ok to drive the red truck then. It’s a nice truck. What’s wrong with the driving the red truck? What’s so bad about it?

So that’s the difference in Buddhism. We don’t go after fame and profit. But we seek in wisdom. Alright? Thank you. That’s it for today.
