The way of men is harmony,
With merit and error interspersed.
On virtuous deeds you rise; offenses make you fall.
It has nothing to do with anyone else at all.
아수라의 세상은 위험하지만, 인간의 법계는 어떠한가요? 선하고 악한 두 종류의 인간이 모두 존재합니다. 인류의 방식은 화합입니다. 누구하고도 잘 어울릴 수 있는 사람은 조화로운 존재입니다.
The realm of asuras is dangerous, but what about the realm of people? There are both good and evil people. The way of men is harmony. People are harmonious beings who are capable of getting along with anyone.
그러나 인간이 된 이들은 완전히 선한 것도 아니고, 완전히 악하지도 않습니다. 완전히 선한 이들은 천상에서 왕생하며, 반대로 철저히 악한 이들은 축생이나 아귀가 되거나, 지옥에 떨어집니다. 사람들은 공과 죄를 모두 짓습니다. 한 사람의 공功이 죄罪보다 더 크면, 부유하고 좋은 가족에 태어날 것이고, 작은 공과 무거운 죄를 가진 이는 가난한 가족에 태어날 것입니다.
However, those who become human beings are neither completely good nor completely bad. Beings who are completely good are reborn in the heavens, while those who are thoroughly bad become animals or hungry ghosts or fall into the hells. People have both merit and offenses. When a person's merit is greater than his offenses, he will be born into a rich and distinguished family, but one with small merit and heavy offenses will be born into a poor family.
이런 극과 극은 천가지 다른 점이 있고, 무수히 많은 차이점이 있습니다. 그러므로 한 게송에서 말하길, 공죄상간功罪相間 즉 공과 죄가 번갈아 있다라고 합니다. 공이 있으면 또한 죄도 있다는 것입니다. 완전히 극단적으로 음도 아니고, 극단적인 양도 아닌 것입니다. 우세한 음의 기운이 있는 존재는 귀신이 됩니다. 대부분이 양의 기운인 이들은 천신이 됩니다. 인간이 되지 않습니다.
Between these extremes are a thousand differences and a myriad distinctions. Therefore, the verse says: With merit and error interspersed. They have some merit, and they also have some offenses; they are neither extremely yin nor extremely yang. Beings with a preponderance of yin become ghosts. Those who are mostly yang become gods; they don't become humans.
인간은 천상으로 승천할 수 있고, 또는 지옥에 떨어질 수 있습니다. 여러분이 선행을 하면, 상승하고, 죄를 지으면, 떨어집니다. 그래서 게송에서 말하길, 덕승얼항 德升孽降 즉 덕으로 승(올라가다)하고, 과보로 강(내려간다)이라 합니다.
Human beings can ascend to the heavens or fall into the hells. If you do good deeds, you ascend; if you commit offenses, you fall. So the verse says: On virtuous deeds you rise; offenses make you fall.
개유타언 豈有他焉 즉 이것은 다른 어떤 이와도 상관없는 일입니다. 다른 사람들은 여러분이 지옥에 떨어지는지, 귀신이 되는지 또는 축생이 되는지 알 수가 없습니다. 이는 오직 여러분에게 달려있습니다. 여러분이 지은 것은 여러분이 견뎌야 합니다. 여러분은 스스로 행동에 대한 결과에 고통받아야만 합니다.
It has nothing to do with anyone else at all. Other people cannot tell you to fall into the hells, make you a ghost, or cause you to become an animal. It is entirely up to you. What you create you must endure. You must suffer the consequences of your own actions.
