When I first started 21 years ago, It's a long time ago. 22 years ago.
내가 21년 전 시작했을 때, 그건 오래된 일입니다. 22년 전이군요.
One of the reasons... I tell you something very personal.
여러 이유 중 하나는... 내가 여러분에게 굉장히 개인적인 걸 이야기해줄게요.
One of the major reasons why I wanted to excel in Chan.
내가 선에서 탁월해지고 싶었던 여러 이유 중 하나는
Because I was told
왜냐하면 내가 듣기로
the patriarchs and the great sages said
조사 스님들과 위대한 성인들이 말하길
there's a way to generate tremendous amount of blessings.
엄청나게 많은 복을 지을 방법이 한 가지 있다고 했기 때문입니다.
Coming from a business background, my fascination was how to become rich and powerful.
나는 경영학을 배경으로 갖고 있기에, 부유하고 파워풀해진다는 것이 내 관심사였습니다.
So, I was fascinated by the concept of how do you become so rich and powerful?
그래서 나는 아주 부유하고 강력진다는 그 개념에 매료되었습니다.
And so, there's saying in Chan that if you practice Chan, you can generate tremendous amount of blessings.
그래서 선을 수행하면 복을 엄청나게 많이 지을 수 있다는 말이 있는 겁니다.
Wow, that's a way to go. Maybe a new approach in life.
우와... 그것이 갈 길이구나. 인생의 새로운 방식이 될 수도 있겠다 싶었습니다.
And how do you do that?
그건 어떻게 하는걸까요?
Not by selling.
팔아서 하는 게 아닙니다.
Not by stealing.
훔쳐서 하는 게 아닙니다.
But they say that if you can meditate,
사람들이 말하길, 여러분이 명상해서
you are able to, In one split second.
한순간이라도
To have no thoughts in your mind.
마음에 아무런 생각이 없을 수 있다면,
Okay. Then you are generating blessings.
그러면 여러분은 복을 짓는데,

were to take the Ganges sands.
모래알처럼
You know the sands? The Ganges is a river in India.
여러분 모래알죠? 갠지스강은 인도에 있는데,
The biggest, longest river in India.
인도에서 가장 크고, 그 길이가 길어요.
And the sands on the Ganges River.
갠지스강 모래알은
It's so, it's uncountable. Yes?
셀 수가 없어요.
So the Buddhist has a saying that Ganges' sand meaning is uncountable number.
불교에서는 갠지스강의 모래라고 하면, 셀 수 없이 많다는 뜻이거든요.
Even computers can't come up with a number.
컴퓨터도 그 숫자를 낼 수 없어요.
You take all the Ganges sands.... and the sands of the Ganges river.
그 갠지스강의 모래알만큼
And give a temple made of seven jewels.
칠곱 가지 보석으로 만들어진 사찰을
Made of seven jewels.
여기서 칠보란,
back then, the seven kinds of jewels are the gold, silver, the mother of pearls, carnelians, and so on and so on. Okay?
예전에 칠보라고 하면, 금, 은, 마노, 홍옥..
Lapis lazuli and so on.
유리 등...
So there are seven jewels.
그렇게 일곱 가지 보석을
They are considered the gems of humanity.
그것들을 인간 세계의 보물이라고 여겼습니다.
You take all the seven gems and make them of the stupas, the temples.
이 일곱 가지 보물을 다 가져다가, 절을 지어서,
And you give to, you donated to, make offerings to the triple jewels.
그 절을 삼보에 공양물로 올려도,
So the blessings you generate from donating the Ganges sands worth of stupas made of seven jewels Okay.
그래서 일곱 가지 보석으로 만들어진 사찰을 갠지스강의 모래알 숫자만큼 기부해서 짓는 복이
Is even less than you were to be able to sit in meditation with no thought for one split second.
단 한 순간 아무 생각도 없이 앉아서 명상할 수 있는 것만 못하다고 했습니다.
Okay? That's why I wanted to learn to meditate.
오케이? 그래서 명상을 배우고 싶었습니다.
That's why I wanted to learn Chan.
그게 내가 선을 배우고 싶었던 이유입니다.
You believe or not.
여러분이 믿을 수 있을지 모르지만

아닌가요?
Shana: Where's the money? hahaha.
샤나: 근데 돈이 어디에 있는데요? 하하하
Where's the money? Ah, I'm glad she asked.
그럼 돈이 어디 있느냐고? 아! 샤나가 그 질문을 해줘서 기쁘네요.
Okay. If you do Chan, where's the money?
선을 하는데 돈이 어디 갔냐...
Okay. Where's the beef?
소고기는 어디 있느냐?
Okay? I'm still working on it. (Master laughs)
아... 난 아직도 노력 중이에요. (마스터가 웃는다)
I'm not done yet.
아직 다 못한거에요.
Chan is... a state of Chan is way beyond your imagination.
선은... 선의 경계는 여러분의 상상을 훨씬 넘어섭니다.
That's idea behind it.
그런 개념입니다.
But what I'm getting at is, today I wanted to talk to you about this concept of blessings. Right?
그런데 내가 지금 이해하는 건, 오늘 복의 개념에 대해서 이야기를 해보고 싶었습니다.
When you do Chan, you generate a lot of blessings.
여러분이 선을 하면, 복을 많이 짓습니다.
Chan generates a lot of blessings.
선은 많은 복을 만들어냅니다.
And it takes a lot of blessings to practice Chan.
그리고 선을 수행하려면 많은 복이 필요합니다.
So far so good?
지금까지 이해했나요?
So, no further dos, I'll tell you about this concept of blessings. Okay?
그래서 그뿐입니다. 이제 이 복의 개념에 대해서 말해줄게요.
Yes? We talked about this a little bit last weekend.
네? 지난 주말에 잠깐 이야기했었는데,
I prepared this last Saturday, but didn't have a chance because people asked too many questions.
사실 이 이야기를 하려고 지난주 토요일에 준비했는데, 사람들이 질문이 많아서 기회가 없었어요.

So what are these blessings here?
그렇다면 여기서 복은 무엇인가요?
And, Okay?
알겠나요?
It takes a tremendous amount of blessings to practice Chan. Okay?
선을 수행하려면 엄청난 양의 복이 필요합니다. 오케이?
Okay. Blessings according to the Buddha.
복은 부처님의 설명에 따르면
There are five kinds
다섯 가지가 있습니다.
Okay? The first kind is long life.
첫 번째 종류는 “장수”입니다.
Okay. that comes first. Because, without a long life,
그게 먼저입니다. 왜냐하면 장수하지 못하면,
there's no point in having material things.
물질적인 것들을 소유하는 의미가 없으니까요.
So far so good.
그렇죠?
So long life is the first aspect of blessings.
그래서 장수는 복의 첫 양상입니다.
So for example, In the U.S., in developed countries, the lifespan is longer than in the poorer countries, in developing countries.
예를 들어 미국이나 선진국의 경우, 가난한 나라나 개발도상국보다 수명이 더 길답니다.
Okay. Because improved hygiene, improved medical care, and so on and so on.
왜냐하면 개선된 위생, 더 좋은 의료 환경 등 덕분입니다.
Really. Okay? So that's blessings.
정말이에요. 알았나요? 그래서 그게 복입니다.
You have the blessings to live in a richer country.
여러분이 복이 있어야 더 부유한 나라에서 살 수 있습니다.
That's why your lifespan is longer.
그래서 수명이 더 깁니다.
Agree?
동의하죠?
Okay.
알았나요?
There's acupuncture here. There is.... you know?
여긴 침술사도 있잖아요. 그리고 뭐...
Okay. So what's the second aspect of blessings?
오케이. 그래서 복의 두 번째 양상은 뭘까요?
You have wealth.
여러분이 부유한 겁니다.
Hm? Okay? You live long, you might as well have money to spend.
알았나요? 오래 사는데, 이왕이면 쓸 돈이 있으면 좋겠죠.
You know, nice houses to stay in,
살 수 있는 좋은 집도 있어야 하고,
Nice car to drive in, red Ferrari to drive in. You ask me.
운전할만한 좋은 차가 있어야겠죠. 빨간 페라리 어때요?
Bigger temples if you ask me.
넓은 사찰들.
So if I were blessed, Shana, I would be driving a red Ferrari and living in a big temple.
만약에 복이 있으면, 응? 샤나... 빨간 페라리 타고, 큰 절에서 살겠지.
Shana: Inaudible.
샤나: 안 들림
Excuse me? haha.
뭐라고? 하하
Okay. So, so you agree with that.
오케이. 그래서 너도 나랑 동의하는구나.
So part of blessing is that you have nicer things in life.
그러니까 복이란 여러분 삶에 더 좋은 것들을 갖는 것이 포함됩니다.
You have possessions. You have wealth.
소유물이 있는 거예요. 부(富)를 갖는 것입니다.
Yes? The third aspect of blessings is that you have fame.
네? 복의 세 번째 양상은 명성입니다.
You know, you live long.
그러니까 여러분이 장수하고,
You have, you own things.
소유한 것들이 있지만
But if people don't like you wherever you are, whatever you do, wherever you go,
여러분이 어디에 있든, 뭘 하든, 어딜 가든 사람들이 여러분을 좋아하지 않는다면,
it's not very, you're not very happy, are you?
그게 좀... 행복하지 못합니다. 그렇죠?
What's the point of living if people hate you?
사람들이 당신을 혐오하는데 무슨 낙으로 사나요?
You know? You go to California to campaign people, you know?
그렇죠? 선거운동하러 캘리포니아 가는데,
Rallying in states, protest against you.
여러 주에서 집회를 여는데, 사람들이 당신에게 항의합니다.
I wouldn't call that blessed. Hahahahaha
나는 그걸 복이 많다고 말하지는 않을 것 같아요. 하하하하.
It's amazing that guy can be so hated, ever, in history of this country.
이 나라 역사상 그 남자가 그렇게까지 사람들에게 혐오를 받을 수 있다는 게 놀랍습니다.
Presidential candidates.
대통령 후보에다
He has money.
돈도 있는데,
Okay? He's in 60s, he has long life.
나이가 60이니, 장수하는데,
But he's hated.
그런데 사람들이 그를 혐오합니다.
That's why we don't call it being blessed. Yes?
그런 걸 우리는 복 받았다고 부르진 않죠. 그렇죠?
I would call it being cursed. Hahahahaha
나는 그걸 저주받았다고 부를 것 같아요. 하하하.
Again, I'm not being political here.
다시 말하지만 나는 정치적인 이야기를 하려는 게 아니에요.
Yes?
네?
Shana: is it more like good reputation? He has fame right?
샤나: 그럼 좋은 평판을 이야기하는 거죠? 그 사람은 유명하긴 하니까요. 그렇죠?
Yeah, good reputation.
네 좋은 평판
It's not just fame, but good reputation.
이게 그냥 유명세가 아니라, 좋은 평판 맞습니다.
Shana: You can be famous and be hated.
샤나: 유명하면서 미움을 받을 수 있는거죠.
Yeah, you don't want to be like Osama. Osama Bin Laden.
네.. 오사마, 오사마 빈 라덴처럼 되고 싶지는 않잖아요?
You're famous. you're infamous. Okay?
그건 악명이 높은거죠.
I would call Trump as infamous, not famous.
나는 트럼프를 악명이 높다라고 말하겠어요. 유명한게 아니라.
Yeah. Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, (People all laugh) uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh.
네.. 어 어 어 어 어 어 어 (사람들이 모두 웃는다) 어 어 어 어 어
Do I have... I need to have lots more people hating me?
나한테 많은 사람들이 날 혐오하는게 필요할까요?
No.
아니죠.
No, the fame here is that you have reputation.
아닙니다. 여기서 명성이란 여러분에게 평판이 있는거죠.
You have a kind of good reputation.
어떤 좋은 평판이 있는겁니다.
Yes? That's called blessings.
그렇죠? 그걸 복이라고 하는 겁니다.
And number four. Peace and bliss.
네 번째는 안락(安樂)입니다.
What's peace and bliss here?
안락은 무엇일까요?
It's not happiness.
이건 행복과 다릅니다.
For example, the people who are living down here
예를 들어 사람들이 여기 이 아래,
in the desire realm.
욕계에 살고 있습니다.
Do not have peace and bliss.
안락이 없어요.
If you're a human, you're supposed to have a lot of worries.
여러분이 인간이라면 원래 근심걱정을 많이 갖고 있는 겁니다.
Yes or no?
그런가요 아닌가요?
I worry about getting,
더 많이 얻기 위해 근심합니다.
you know, getting more.
더 많이 갖고 싶어서
We have a lot of vegetables given to us every week.
우리는 매주 채소를 많이 받습니다.
Now we worry about donating so that it's not wasted. Okay.
이제 우리는 사람들에게 어떻게 나눠줘야 하는지 걱정합니다. 그래야 낭비가 없으니까요. 그렇죠?
There's lots of worries.
걱정이 많습니다.
Okay. So there's no peace and bliss at all.
그래서 안락이 전혀 없습니다.
Personally, I experience no peace and bliss.
개인적으로 나는 안락을 전혀 경험하지 못하네요.
Another answer for you.
여러분에게 달리 답하자면,
What happened to, you know, the red Ferrari?
빨간 페라리는 어떤가요?
Well.
글쎄요
In contrast, if you were to live in heaven.
반대로 여러분이 천상에 살고 있다고 치면,
They're very peaceful. They're blissful.
아주 평화롭습니다. 안락합니다.
So if you truly are blessed in this human realm.
그래서 여러분이 이 인간의 세계에서 안락하다면,
You can experience peace and bliss in the midst of all of this.
이런 모든 문제 가운데에서도 안락을 경험할 수 있는 겁니다.
So far so good?
지금까지 괜찮나요?
Okay. This is not happiness. Let me remind you.
오케이. 그래서 그런 행복은 아닙니다. 여러분에게 상기해드릴게요.
This is what the, the other religions call happiness. Or worldly people call happiness. It's not.
다른 종교에서는 행복이라 부르고, 세속 사람들은 행복을 말하지만, 이건 다릅니다.
That happiness is not peace and bliss at all.
그 행복은 전혀 안락은 아닙니다.
It's called misery. It's called suffering.
그걸 불행이라 부르고, 괴로움이라 부릅니다.
Most of you disagree but you don't dare raise your hands.
여러분 대부분은 동의하지 않겠지만, 여러분 (동의하지 않는다고) 감히 손들지 않겠죠?
The concept of happiness as you know is nonsense.
여러분이 알다시피 행복의 개념은 넌센스입니다.
It's not really happiness at all.
그건 정말로 전혀 행복이 아닙니다.
except when you go see the shrinks and they say, oh, you're so happy.
그중 예외는 여러분이 상담사를 만나러 가면, 그들이 “오! 당신 아주 행복합니다”라고 할겁니다.
Oh! excuse me. haha
오! 미안해요. 하하하.
Oh! excuse me. My true prejudices come out. haha, yes.
오! 미안해요 미안. 나의 진정한 편견이 튀어나왔네요.
Shana: So if you hang out with a guy and you like him, right? Uh huh.
샤나: 예를 들어 어따ᅠ간 사람하고 시간을 보내고, 그 사람이 너무 좋다면...
And now I worry of people dinging my doors.
이제 사람들이 와서 차문을 문콕할까 걱정합니다.
I have no, absolutely no peace and bliss.
그럼 나는 완전히 안락이란 없을텐데...
But at least I have a red Ferrari.
하지만 적어도 빨간 페라리 차 한 대는 있겠죠.
Shana: But I think you really like a car and you really enjoy it. Even that wouldn’t bother you.
샤나: 하지만 제 생각에, 진짜로 차를 좋아하고, 그걸 정말로 즐기면, 그런 일조차도 괜찮지 않을까요?
Bother what?
무슨 말이니?
Shana: That, you know, the kind of worries wouldn’t bother you. It's too good.
샤나: 그러니까, 그런 걱정조차도 신경 안 쓰이겠죠. 너무 좋아서!
Really? You really think so?
정말로? 정말 그렇게 생각하니?
Can you, suppose you have a red Ferrari and your door get dinged, what do you do?
여러분이 빨간 페라리를 모는데, 차문에 문콕을 당했다고 합시다. 여러분은 어떻게 하나요?
Shana: Why?
샤나: 왜요?
No. If you have a red Ferrari and your door gets dinged,
아니. 빨간 페라리를 모는데, 누가 차 문을 찌그러뜨리고 간거에요.
What would you do?
이제 어떻게 할건가요?
I'm asking you. She doesn't know yet. Yes sir?
내가 묻습니다. 샤나는 아직 (이런 상황을) 모릅니다. 네 신사분.
Jim: ... bring the Ferrai to the Ferrari repair center of LA.. audible)
짐: 페라리를 LA페라리 수리소에 가져가야죠.
He would go and repair it at The Ferrari repair center of LA or San Diego. Whatever. Okay.
그가 말하길, 엘에이나 샌디에고 뭐 그런 페라리 수리센터에 차를 수리 맡겨야 한답니다.

See, that proves to me that you are not blessed yet.
보세요. 이게 여러분이 아직 복이 없다는걸 증명합니다.
Okay. I buy another one.
오케이? 나 같으면 한 대 더 사요.
If you really have blessings, you buy another one.
여러분이 진짜 복이 있다면, 한 대 더 사는 겁니다.
okay, there you go. Donate to the temple.
오케이? 그래요. 그리고 한 대는 절에 기부하는거죠.
That's called blessing.
그걸 복이라고 하는거에요.
Agree or disagree? Hmm? (Everyone laughs)
동의해요 아닌가요? 흠? (모두 웃는다)
We're talking big time here.
크게 생각해야죠.
You cannot be small thinkers.
우리가 작은 생각만 하면 안되는 겁니다.
See, Tommy likes it. Now he's awake. (Everyone laughs)
보세요. 토미는 좋아하잖아요? 이제 잠도 달아났나봐요. (모두 웃는다)
You see, that's blessings. You got that?
보셨죠? 그게 복입니다. 이해했죠?
You buy another one. Oh, you mean a better one? A better model. I buy a better model. Okay?
한 대 더 사는 거에요. 오! 더 나은 걸로? 더 좋은 차종으로 한 대 뽑는거죠. 더 나은 차로 뽑습니다. 알았죠?
So that's peace and bliss.
그래서 그게 안락입니다.
So that means you really have no worries at all.
그 뜻은 여러분에게 정말로 아무런 근심걱정도 없는겁니다.
You buy a red Ferrari, you drive it, and you know, in a parking lot, and you drive it wrong,
빨간 페라리를 사서, 운전해서 다니고, 주차장에서 잘못해서
so you could key your door. you say, eh, I'll buy another one.
그래서 누가 키로 그은거에요. 근데 여러분이 “에! 한 대 더 사면되지”
That's peace and bliss.
그게 안락입니다.
Can you see that?
알았나요?
You have no worries whatsoever. That's called peace and bliss.
아무런 걱정이 없습니다. 그걸 안락이라 부릅니다.
Because the happiness that you talk about is like you marry someone you're in love with,
여러분이 행복이라 말하는 것은 사랑하는 사람한테 결혼하고,
and you're worried about losing her.
그녀를 잃을까 걱정하는 것입니다.
You really are peace and blissful. You marry someone you love, you lose her, you marry another one. (everyone laughs)
진정으로 안락하다면, 여러분이 사랑하는 사람과 결혼해서, 그 사람을 잃으면, 그냥 다른 사람하고 다시 결혼하는거에요. (모두 웃음)
See, you guys are not blessed at all. That's why you don't know what that state is.
보셨죠. 여러분은 복이 전혀 없어요. 그래서 여러분이 그 경계가 어떤지 모르는 겁니다.
I just proved to you that your mindset is not,
내가 방금 여러분의 마음상태가 그렇지 않다는 걸 증명해보였습니다.
you don't have enough blessings yet, that's why you're not thinking properly.
아직 복이 충분치 않은 겁니다. 그래서 제대로 생각을 못하고 있는 겁니다.
Yes, ma'am.
네 말씀하세요.
Shana: I want to share with you. Yes. I'm driving at 5, right? And then, after we drive.
샤나: 제가 공유하고 싶은게 있어요. 네. 제가 차를 몰고 어디를 가고 있었는데,
Getting up there.
거의 다 갔어요.
Shana: Yes. So I was driving, and then, I make a right, so I scratched the wheel cover. Two times in a week. Right after ... Uh huh. I go to my office, and I look at my employees, like, you know, today I scratched my wheel cover. They're looking at me like, why are you talking about it and smiling?
샤나: 네, 그래서 가고 있었는데, 우회전을 했어요. 그때 차 휠커버가 길 모퉁이에 긁혔어요. 일주일에 두 번이나! 그렇게 사무실에 도착해서 직원들을 보고, 오늘 세상에 차 휠커버를 긁어버렸네. 그랬어요. 오늘 휠커버를 긁었어. 근데 직원들이 나를 보더니 왜 그런 이야기를 미소지으면서 하는지 신기하데요.
When you're talking about a cover only, the wheels, the rims, okay? They call it rims. I call the entire car.
너는 근데 그냥 휠커버만 그런거잖아. 그렇지? 나는 차 전체 한 대를 이야기하는 중인데.
Shana: It's too expensive.
샤나: 휠커버 너무 비싸거든요.
The S5? Nah. It's overpriced.
(아우디) 에스5? 가격이 너무 비싸지.
Shana: Anyway, I told them... (inaudible) like, I am smiling and talking about that,
샤나: 아무튼 직원들에게 말했어요. (안 들림) 그래서 내가 웃으면서, 그 이야기를 하고 있었던거죠.
That you have some blessings. You see?
그럼 너도 복이 좀 있긴 한거다. 봤지?
That's why it doesn't bother you. precisely the point. Okay?
그래서 그게 네 심기를 건드리지 않은 거지. 바로 그게 요점이에요. 오케이?
You see? When you have true blessings, nothing bothers you.
알았죠? 여러분이 진정한 복이 있으면, 아무것도 심기를 건드리지 않습니다.
The losses don't bother you.
손실이 신경 쓰이지도 않습니다.
The losses don't bother you.
여러분에게 손해가 생겨도 신경 안 쓰입니다.
Agree, disagree. Okay? That's blessings.
동의하나요 아닌가요? 오케이? 그게 복입니다.
That's why you are always at peace, and you always are blissful.
그래서 늘 안락한 겁니다. 언제나 늘 안락한거에요.
You're not afflicted at all. Okay?
전혀 번뇌롭지 않습니다. 오케이?
Another thing is, for example, you go to Brussels airport, and you're supposed to get blown up by that ISIS thing. You know?
또 한 가지는 예를 들어서, 여러분이 브뤼셀 공항에 갔는데, 아이시스 때문에 원래 폭파될 예정이었던겁니다.
But peace here, meaning that also includes safety.
그런데 여기서 안락의 “안”자는 안전하다는 의미도 포함합니다.
Somehow, you were delayed, and you get a traffic jam. You didn't make it there on time. You know?
그런데 어찌 된 일인지 일이 지체된거에요. 차가 막혀서 제시간에 도착을 못 한 겁니다.
So that the bomb blows up without you there.
그래서 여러분이 거기 없는 상태에서 폭탄이 폭발합니다.
That's called peace as well. See?
그것도 “안락”이라고 부릅니다.
That's safety.
안전을 의미합니다.
Agree? Is that clear?
동의하나요? 명확히 이해되나요?
Okay, because if you live long, but you only have two limbs missing,
오케이. 근데 여러분이 오래 살기는 하는데, 팔다리가 두 개 없는겁니다.
it's not quite blessings yet.
그러면 그건 아직 복이 아닌거죠.
You have a long life, you're wealthy,
여러분이 오래 살고, 돈도 많은데,
but you have two limbs missing.
팔다리 중 2개가 모자릅니다.
That's not blessings. Yes?
그럼 복이 아니죠. 그렇죠?
See that?
보셨죠?
The Buddha is very wise.
부처님은 매우 지혜롭습니다.
Okay? And finally, what's number five?
오케이? 마지막으로, 다섯 번째는 뭔가요?
Healthy.
건강입니다.

The prior three are outside.

Number four is inside. You feel good inside.
4번째는 내면의 일입니다. 여러분이 내면에서 기분이 좋습니다.
You feel good inside.
기분이 좋은겁니다.

다섯 번째, 오케이?
You feel satisfied.
만족스럽습니다.
You have the health to be able to do the things you want to do.
하고 싶은 일을 할 수 있는 건강이 있습니다.
You want to go jogging, you go jogging.
조깅을 하고 싶으면, 조깅을 가는거죠.
Does it make sense?
이해가 되나요?
And that's called blessings.
그걸 복이라 부릅니다.
You see, the Westerners, you Westerners, think that being blessed is to have money.
서양인들은, 여러분과 같은 서양사람들은, 복이 있다는 것은 돈을 있는걸로 생각합니다.
Not at all. It's not enough.
전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 그걸로 충분하지 않습니다.
Having money is not enough.
돈을 갖고 있는 것으로 충분하지 못합니다.

미스터 트럼프를 보십시오.
He may have money,
그는 돈이 있을지는 몰라도,
but clearly he's not that blessed.
하지만 명백히 그는 복 받지 못했습니다.

이제 앞서 했던 질문은 큰 사찰하고 빨간 페라리한테 무슨 일이 생겼냐는거죠? 왜 없냐?
First you need to have the blessings.
첫째 여러분이 복이 있어야 합니다.
Then, the money, the wealth is a materialization, a manifestation of your blessings.
그런 다음에, 돈과 부는 복이 물질화된 겁니다. 발현된 거에요.
Let me give you this, another, give you another explanation, the concept of wealth you have, money you have.
부의 개념, 여러분이 가진 돈에 대한 또 다른 설명을 하나 해주겠습니다.
It's only a withdrawal of your blessings.
여러분의 부는 단지 복의 인출에 불과합니다.
The money you have in your bank account,
여러분 은행 계좌나 지갑에 있는 돈은
in your wallet, is a withdrawal of your blessings.
복을 인출할 것입니다.
So if you don't have the blessings, you cannot have money.
그래서 만약 복이 없다면, 돈이 있을 수 없습니다.
Conversely speaking,
반대로 말하자면,
just because you don't have money, doesn't mean you are not blessed.
여러분이 돈이 없다고 해서, 그게 여러분에게 복이 없다는 뜻은 아닙니다.
If you don't have money,
돈이 없다면,
sometimes it means that you haven't made a withdraw yet.
어떤 경우 그건 여러분이 아직 인출을 안 했다는 의미기도 합니다.

Shana: let’s say you have a lot of blessings, ... you happen to make a lot of money. but then the buddhism say, you enjoy your blessings, you exhaust it. What if you spend money for most of time, for goodness of other people, but also you spend blessing for yourself.
샤나: 복이 많다고 칩시다. 그런데 무슨 일이 생기냐면, 돈을 많이 번거에요. 그런데 불교에서 말하길, 복을 즐기면, 복이 고갈된다고 했잖아요. 그러면 만약에 평소에 돈을 쓰면서 지내는데, 다른 사람들을 위해서 쓰고, 어쩔 때 한번씩 자기 자신을 위해서 쓰면 어떤가요?
Yes. Why do you ask harder and harder questions? We have a limit in this temple. One hard question per day. Okay?
네. 어째서 이렇게 점점 더 어려운 질문을 한답니까? 여기 절에서는 한도가 있는거에요. 하루에 어려운 질문은 하나만. 오케이?
Alright. the real question, let me paraphrase the question.
좋습니다. 진짜 질문은... 질문을 다른 말로 하자면,
Now is, the concept of blessing.
이제... 복의 개념은...
Now you understand more about what blessings are about. Okay?
이제 여러분은 복이 무엇인지 더 이해하게 되었습니다. 맞죠?
How do you generate blessings? Yes?
그러면 복은 어떻게 지는걸까요? 네?
You want to be rich. Then you must have blessings.
부자가 되길 원한다면, 그러면 반드시 복이 많아야만 합니다.
Then how do you generate blessings?
그렇다면 복을 어떻게 지어야 하나요?
The Buddha also said,
부처님은 또 말씀하시길,
there are three ways to generate blessings.
복을 짓는데 3가지 방법이 있다고 했습니다.
First one is to give.
첫 번째는 보시입니다.

오케이?
The first thing you do, the first thing you want to generate blessings is to practice giving.
여러분이 해야 하는 첫 번째는, 복을 짓기 위해서 해야 하는 첫째는 보시를 해야 합니다.
Meaning, for example, if you have children, young age children.
예를 들어 여러분에게 자녀가 있다면, 어린 자녀가 있다면,
You teach them to practice giving.
아이들에게 보시를 행하도록 가르쳐야 합니다.
You teach them.... to give them a dollar bill and say, go give a donate to Salvation Army.
아이들에게 1달러짜리 지폐를 주고는 구세군에 가서 기부하라고 가르칩니다.
Put it in the donation box. Okay?
기부함에 넣게 하는 겁니다. 오케이?
Give it to a beggar. Okay?
거지에게 주게 합니다. 오케이?
That's practicing giving.
그것이 보시행입니다.
Children have to be taught to give.
아이들에게 주는 것을 가르쳐줘야만 합니다.
It turns out that the a lot of rich people, I know, they train their children that way.
많은 부자들은 아이들에게 그런 식으로 훈련시키는 것으로 보입니다.
One of the fundamental ways they train their children is to give.
아이들을 훈련하는 기본적 방식 중 하나가 “주기”입니다.
Unlike the Westerners or common people where they say, you get rich by stealing, by marrying to rich. Okay?
서양인들이나 보통 사람들은 도둑질로 부자가 되고, 결혼해서 부자가 된다고 하는데, 그와 달리,
When you steal, you become poorer.
도둑질을 하면 더 가난해지고,
When you give, you become richer.
나눠주면 더 부자가 됩니다.
You become more blessed.
더 복이 많아집니다.

It's a part of being a parent is teaching your children the proper knowledge. Okay?
부모 노릇 중 하나가 아이들에게 바른 지식을 가르치는 것입니다.
You have to teach them to give.
아이들에게 주도록 가르쳐야만 합니다.
That's a part of being a human is to give.
인간이 되는 한 부분이 바로 주는 것입니다.

그게 복을 짓는 방법입니다.

여러분이 “주면”
If you know how to give, there's a multiplier that comes back to you.
주는 방법을 알면, 여러분에게 되돌아오는 배율이 있습니다.

If you give to a poor person.
여러분이 가난한 사람에게 뭔가를 준다면,

그래서 여러분이 그런 사람에게 주는 것은,

오계를 수지하는 사람한테 주는 것만큼 좋지 않습니다.
If you give to one person.
여러분이 어떤 한 사람한테 줍니다.
Let's say to a homeless person.
그게 노숙자라고 합시다.
It's not as beneficial (than) to give to a person who is moral.
그건 도덕적인 사람에게 주는 것만큼 이롭지 못합니다.
Who keeps the rules of morality.
계율을 지키는 사람을 말합니다.
It doesn't matter poor or rich.
가난하든 부자이든 중요하지 않습니다.
It's not as good to give it to a person who is moral.
(가난한 사람에게 주면) 도덕적인 사람에게 주는 것만 못합니다.

So it makes a difference how you donate. How you give.
그래서 어떻게 기부하느냐, 어떻게 주는지가 차이를 만듭니다.
And then, you give to a person who is moral is not as good as to give to a person who?
그런 다음, 도덕적인 사람한테 주는 것은 또 어떤 사람에게 주는 것만 못하냐면,

So, there is a higher level when you practice.... you give to, let's say a sage.
그래서 여러분이 수행할 때 더 높은 단계가 있습니다. 여러분이 주는데, 현인(賢人)이라고 합시다.

You get more blessing coming back your way.
여러분에게 되돌아오는 복이 더 많습니다.

Intuitively, it makes sense, right? Yes.
직관적으로 이게 말이 되죠? 맞죠? 네.
Shana: if you donate to a person who is not completely moral, but.. because that person is confused, right? But the person who's very sincere and want to learn, could it better?
샤나: 만약에 완벽히 도덕적이지 못한 사람에게 기부를 한다면, 그 사람이 아직 미혹해서 말이죠. 그런데 그 사람이 아주 진실하고 배우고 싶은 마음이 간절하다면, 그래도 그게 좀 낫나요?
No, the moral person is by definition the person who keeps the rules of morality.
아니. 도덕적인 사람이란 정의상 계율을 지키는 사람을 말하는거에요.
Meaning you don't steal, you don't kill, you don't, you know, lie and do those things.
그건 훔치지 않고, 죽이지 않고... 거짓말하지 않고, 그런 것들을 한다는 뜻입니다.
That's why, that's why you don't want to donate to those people.
그런 이유로, 그런 사람들에게 기부하고 싶지 않은 겁니다.
You prefer to look for someone who is more moral.
더 도덕적인 그런 사람을 찾는 게 낫습니다.
It's more beneficial to you.
그게 여러분에게 더 유익합니다.
Listen. Here's the point. Here's the point.
들어보세요. 요점은 이겁니다. 여기서 요점은...
Suppose you were to go to take the money and donate it to charity, for example.
예를 들어 여러분이 돈을 가져다가 자선사업에 기부를 하는겁니다. 예를 들면요.
And then most of you will not like what you're about to hear.
그런데 여러분 대부분은 아마 이런 이야기 들으면 좋아하지 않을거에요.
You give, donate to charity, okay? Red Cross, let's say, whatever, okay?
여러분이 자선사업에 기부를 하면, 뭐 적십자라든지, 뭐든지 간에.. 예를 들어서.
It's not as beneficial to you as a person to donate, to give to a person who holds the five precepts.
그런데 기부하는 것이 오계를 지키는 사람에게 주는 것만큼 여러분에게 이롭지 못합니다.
You can donate to a thousand people who are poor.
여러분이 가난한 사람 천 명에게 기부할 수는 있지요.
It's not as beneficial to you as donating to a person who keeps the five precepts.
하지만 그게 오계를 지키는 사람 한 명에게 기부하는 것만큼 이롭지 못합니다.
That's what the Buddha says. That's the secret.
그건 부처님이 하신 말씀입니다. 그게 비밀입니다.

Shana: but you're not supposed to be discriminating right? Let's say you meet somebody. She looks very sincere but confused, breaking those rules, but she's not aware. But if you donate and then you know it’s gonna help her to be inspired, it’s no good?
샤나: 그런데 분별하면 안 된다면서요? 그렇죠? 누군가를 만났는데, 그 사람이 아주 진실한 거에요 근데 미혹하죠. 그래서 오계를 깨뜨리는데, 자신은 모르는 거죠. 그런데 우리가 그 사람한테 기부하고, 그게 그 사람에게 감응을 주면, 그건 좋은거 아닌가요?

so basically, basically there's a difference in who you make a donation to.
그래서 기본적으로, 그러니까 기본적으로 기부를 누구에게 하느냐에 따라서 차이가 있습니다.
There's a bigger multiplier that comes back to you depending on how, who you give to.
어떻게, 누구에게 주느냐에 따라 더 큰 배수로 여러분에게 되돌아옵니다.
For example, even within Buddhism,
예를 들어, 심지어 불교 내에서도,
if you were to donate to a Hinayana practitioner,
여러분이 소승 수행자에게 기부를 한다면,
It's not. It's nowhere near the blessing you were to donate to the Mahayana.
그건 대승에 기부한 복과는 거리가 멉니다.
It’s nowhere near.
근처도 못 갑니다.
Up to the point where you can donate to a Buddha. Okay?
근데 여러분이 부처님에게 기부를 할 수 있다면,
It's a very high in blessings as you can imagine.
그러면 여러분이 상상할 수 있듯이 그건 복이 아주 높겠죠.
But you know what's the topmost person you can donate to?
하지만 여러분이 기부할 제일의 대상이 누군지 아시나요?

부처님들은 아닙니다. 부처님의 사리도 아니에요.

This is a beautiful, the beautiful part of the teaching.

The one who does not think, who has no thoughts.
생각하지 않는 자, 생각이 없는 사람.
You donate to the person.
그 사람에게 기부하는 겁니다.
For example, let me be specific for you.
예를 들어, 내가 여러분을 위해서 더 자세히 말하자면,
You take one dollar and you give it to the person who has no thoughts.
여러분이 1달러를 가지고, 생각이 없는 사람에게 준다면,
You know how much money you're making?
그러면 여러분은 돈을 얼마나 많이 벌고 있을까요?

여러분에게 얼마나 되돌아올까요?
How many blessings are you getting back?
여러분은 얼마나 많은 복을 되돌려 받을까요?

셀 수가 없어요. 셀 수 없이 많은 복이에요.
If you find that person and you give to that person, your blessings is incredible.
여러분이 그 사람을 찾아서, 그 사람한테 준다면, 여러분의 복은 어마무시한 겁니다.

Why is it even higher than the Buddha?
왜 그게 부처님(에게 기부하는 것)보다 더 높을까요?

Shana: Higher than the Buddha?
샤나: 부처님보다 높아요?
Higher than the Buddha.
부처님보다 더 높지.
Shana: but Buddha has no thoughts right?
샤나: 그런데 부처님은 생각이 없잖아요. 아니에요?
The Buddha has no thoughts. But, you know,
부처님도 생각이 없지, 하지만...
but his blessings generated, give to the Buddha is not as high as giving to the person who has no thoughts.
그런데 부처님의 복은 생기지만, 부처님에게 주는 것이 생각이 없는 사람에게 주는 것만큼 높지 않습니다.
You can't find that person.
여러분은 그 사람을 찾을 수가 없습니다.
How do you find that person?
그 사람을 어떻게 찾겠습니까?
How do you find that person?
어떻게 찾을까요?
I ask you. Hm?
내가 여러분에게 묻습니다. 네?
Huh? How do you recognize this person?
허? 그 사람을 어떻게 알아보죠?
So how?
그러니 어떻게 하겠어요?
So what's the meaning of this teaching?
그래서 이 가르침의 의미는 무엇인가요?
What does it mean?
이게 무슨 뜻이죠?
Shana: Just give! because you never know.
샤나: 그냥 줘라? 혹시 모르니까?
Ah. That's right. You give. You give. You don't think anymore.
아! 맞아요. 그냥 주라는 겁니다. 더는 생각하지 않고 말이죠.
You don't say, Oh, let me give to Mahayana.
여러분이... 오. 대승에 줘야겠다라고 하지 않는 겁니다.
I don't give to Hinayana.
나는 소승에는 안 줄거야 그러지 않습니다.
Let me give to men. I don't give to women.
난 남자한테는 주고 여자한테는 안 준다라든가,
Let me give to pretty ones. I don't give to ugly ones.
예쁜 사람한테만 주고, 못생긴 사람에게는 안 준다라든가,
No. You give. You give.
아니에요. 그냥 주세요. 그냥 줍니다.
And you're lucky. You give. You don't discriminate.
그리고 여러분이 운이 있다면, 그냥 주고, 분별하지 않습니다.
Then one day you give to someone who has no thoughts.
그러다 어느날 여러분이 생각이 없는 누군가에게 주는거죠.
And you're incredibly blessed.
그러면 여러분은 엄청나게 복 받습니다.
So that's why ultimately you give without discrimination.
그래서 그게 여러분이 분별없이 그냥 주는 궁극적인 이유입니다.
That's the only way for you to get to the guy who has no thoughts.
그것이 여러분이 생각이 없는 남자에게 접근할 수 있는 유일한 길이에요.
Or the girl who has no thoughts.
또는 생각 없는 여인에게...
Because if you're like some of my disciples. my teacher taught me now. Now I know. I'm only giving to a person. I'm going to look. I'm going to hold my dollar. And wait for that person who has no thoughts.
왜냐하면 여러분이 내 제자들 중 몇하고 같다면, 나의 스승님이 지금 나한테 가르쳐줬으니까, 이제 내가 알지. 나는 오직 한 명한테만 주는거야. 찾아봐야지. 1달러를 꼭 들고 있다가 생각이 없는 사람을 기다려야겠다.
You're never able to find that person.
그러면 절대로 그런 사람을 찾을 수 없습니다.
Never. Yes?
절대로. 네?
That's why you practice giving without discrimination. Then you’ll end up, you end up having the highest level of blessing.
그래서 분별없이 보시를 실천해야 하는 것입니다. 그러면 결국 최고의 복을 받게 될 것입니다.

So the question earlier, one question earlier is ‘aren't you supposed to discriminate, not-discriminate’?
그래서 앞서 나왔던 질문, 아까 한 질문에서, 원래 분별하면 안되지 않냐고 했죠?
Yes. You're not supposed to.
네, 분별하면 안되죠.
But beginning, starting out, before you get to the highest level, you need to learn to discriminate. To build up to it.
하지만 처음에는, 시작할 때는, 가장 높은 수준으로 가기 전에, 우선 분별하는 방법을 배워야 합니다. 그 위로 쌓아가는 거에요.

You need to be smart first.
우선은 똑똑할 필요가 있습니다.
Before you become wise.
지혜로워지기 전까지는 말이죠.

You need to practice giving.
보시행을 해야 합니다.
Number two. Another.... better way to generate blessings is to be moral.
두 번째, 또 다른... 복을 지을 수 있는 더 나은 방법은 스스로 도덕적이어야 합니다.

The mere fact that you are a moral person, you are generating a lot of blessings.
여러분이 단지 도덕적인 사람이란 사실만으로도 많은 복을 짓고 있는 것입니다.
