세탁소에서 보내는 봄편지
어제, 낮과 밤의 길이가 똑같은 날인 춘분(春分)을 보냈지요.
전통적으로 농사가 주업이었던 옛날 한국에서는 춘분은 한 해의 일을 시작하는 날이었답니다. 농사를 시작하는 날이었지요. '춘분에 밭을 갈지 않으면 일년 내내 배부르지 못한다'는 말이 있을 정도랍니다. 새해의 시작인 셈입니다. 그런데 이게 한국만의 이야기가 아니라, 아주 오래 전에 로마의 새해 첫날이 바로 춘분이었답니다.
인터넷으로 달력이야기를 찾아보니까 달력에 대한 참 재미있는 역사적 사실들과 이야기들을 알 수 있었답니다. 세계에는 약 40여 종의 다른 달력들이 있었거나 있다는 사실과 어떤 달력이든 춘분과 추분이 있다는 사실등이랍니다.
또 하나 재밌는 사실은 기독교의 부활절과 불교의 열반의 때(The time of Nirvana)가 모두 춘분을 기준으로 삼았다는 것입니다. 기독교회에서 지키는 부활절을 정하는 기준, 곧 춘분이 지난 후 처음 보름달 뜨는 날로 부터 그 다음에 오는 첫 일요일이 바로 부활절이라는 사실도 알게되었답니다.
저도 잘 모르는 어려운 이야기는 그만 하고요. 춘분은 바로 한 해 새로움의 시작을 알리는 날이라는 것입니다.
우리들 각자 어떤 종교를 가졌던 아니면 종교가 없던 그런 건 제가 잘 모를 일이지만 제가 확실하게 말씀드릴 수 있는 것은 봄이라는 것입니다.
물론 각자 기온으로 느끼는 봄은 다를 수 있겠지요. 만일 당신이 지구 남반부에 여행 중이라면 아주 다른 봄일터이겠지요.
그러나 어떤 계절, 어떤 날씨에 살던 마음의 봄, 삶의 봄은 어느 정도는 스스로 만들 수 있지 않을까요?
저는 그런 기분을 조금 도와드릴 수 있답니다. 당신 옷을 깨끗하게 만들어 봄기운을 넣어드리는 것이지요.
봄기운이 넘쳐나는 한 주간이 되시기를...
<아이와 노인>

어린아이가 말했답니다 "밥 먹다가 종종 숟가락을 떨어뜨려요."
자그마한 노인이 대답했답니다. “나도 그런 걸.”
아이가 속삭였답니다. "저는 바지에 쉬를 하기도 하는걸요.”
“나도 그런 걸.” 노인이 웃으며 말했답니다.
아이가 말했답니다. “가끔 울기도해요”
노인은 고개를 끄덕이며 말했답니다. “아무렴, 나도 그런 걸”
아이는 주름 투성이인 노인의 손에서 오는 따뜻함을 느끼며 말했답니다.
“그런데 제일 싫은 건요, 어른들이 제게 관심이 없는 것 같아요.”
"나는 네가 무얼 말하는지 알고 있단다." 자그마한 노인이 말했습니다.
Yesterday, we had the spring equinox day on which the length of the day and night is the same.
In the old days when most of the Korean people made their living by agriculture, the spring equinox day used to be the day on which the work for the year was started. That is, it is the first day of farming for the year. We even have an aphorism in relation to the spring equinox which says, "If you don’t plow a field on the spring equinox, you won’t be able to have the stomach full all the year round.” It’s like the beginning of the year. In fact, it was the spring equinox day which used to be a New Year’s day in Rome long, long time ago.
Looking up calendars on the internet, I could find very interesting historic facts and stories about the calendars. Some of them especially attracted my attention. One is that there were/are 40 different calendars in the world. The other is that all of them have both the spring and fall equinox.
Another interesting fact is that the time of Nirvana in Buddhism and Easter in Christianity are both calculated on the basis of the spring equinox. I got to know that the Christian churches calculate Easter as the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox.
Well, I will stop talking about intellectual stuff about which I myself don’t know well. I just want to share with you the fact that the spring equinox informs us of the beginning of the new.
I don’t know what religion you practice or even whether you have any religion. But one thing I can say for sure is that it is spring now.
Of course, everybody may feel spring differently. And if you’re traveling in the southern hemisphere, it must be totally different.
However, I think that regardless of the weather or seasonal condition in which we may be, we ourselves can make spring in our minds to some extent. Don’t you think so?
