역시 최고의 책인 줄 알았다
세상에는 책이 정말 많다. 그렇다고 아무 책이나 읽을 수는 없다. 아무 음식이나 먹으면 건강이 나빠지는 것처럼 아무 책이나 읽다 보면 단순히 시간 낭비뿐만 아니라 심지어 잘못된 정보로 인생에서 손해를 볼 수도 있다. 그래서 독서의 시작은 좋은 책을 선택하는 것이다.
나는 운이 좋게 주변에 전문가가 많아서 좋은 책을 많이 접하고 있다. 최근에 읽은 책 중에서 지식과 울림을 다 잡은 책이 <나이듦에 관하여>였다. 그리고 이 책을 읽은 모든 사람들이 한결같이 극찬했다. 나는 이 책을 예전에 소개할 때 읽은 사람이 승자라고 극찬을 했었다. 그러면 혹자는 “그건 너 생각이겠지!”라고 무시했을지도 모른다. 그렇게 지나친 사람들에게 이 책이 얼마나 좋은지 다시 한 번 말해주고 싶다.
최근에 전세계 최고 권위의 시상 중 하나인 퓰리쳐상 발표가 있었다. 문학상은 노벨 문학상이 있지만 논픽션(비소설)은 이견 없이 퓰리처 상이 최고 권위의 상이라고 말할 수 있을 것 같다. 아래는 이번에 퓰리처상 최종후보에 올랐던 모든 분야의 작품들이다. 그리고 그중에서 국내에 출간된 작품은 <나이듦에 관하여>가 유일하다.
