나는 어릴 적부터 생각이 많은 사람이었다.
좋게 말해 생각이 많은 거지 실상은 없는 걱정거리도 만들어서 머릿속에 넣어 다니는 모습이었다.
어떤 일을 함에 있어서도 각종 변수에 대비하여 플랜 A 플랜 B 등 각종 대책을 세워두고 완벽주의자적 성향으로 모든 변수들을 통제하여 내 목표를 달성하기 위해 노력했다.
그러나 세상일이 이처럼 자기 마음대로 된다면 얼마나 좋을까. 내가 나이가 들며 깨달은 것은 변수에 다른 사람이 끼어있는 한 100퍼센트란 존재할 수 없는 것이었다.
어릴 적 운칠기삼이라는 말을 듣고 자기 합리화에 불과하다고 생각한 적이 있었다. 그러나 세상의 많은 일들은 노력도 있지만 결국 사람과 연관되어 있기에 운이라는 변수가 목표 달성의 톱니바퀴 중 하나로 같이 돌아갈 수밖에 없는 것이었다. 이 톱니바퀴가 매끈하고 탄탄하여 다른 일과 잘 맞물리면 좋은 결과가 나오고 다른 톱니바퀴를 준비해도 정작 이 톱니바퀴가 녹슬고 찌그러져 있으면 결과가 좋지 않았다.
대학 마지막 학기에 판교에 위치한 내가 원하던 회사에 조기취업에 성공하고 술자리에서 내가 뽑힌 이유를 팀장에게서 들었는데 어이없게도 그 이유는 내가 팀장 베프랑 똑같이 생겨서였다. 그 덕에 다른 경력자와 쟁쟁한 능력자들을 뚫고 입사할 수 있었던 것이다. 내 부족한 능력이라는 톱니바퀴가 사람이라는 톱니바퀴의 변수덕에 목표달성에 성공하게 된 것이었다.
연세대 심리학과 김영훈 교수님이 저술한 [노력의 배신]이라는 저서에서도 이러한 내용이 나온다. 우주비행사 선발에 있어 운이라는 요소를 5% 비율로 나머지는 객관적 능력치로 점수로 환산하여 시뮬레이션하면 그 5%의 운으로 매번 결과가 달라지게 되었다. 이는 노력자체를 부정하는 것은 아니다 노력이 전제되지 않으면 운이 따를 기회조차 주어지지 않기 때문이다. 로또에 당첨되려면 최소한 로또를 사야 하는 노력을 해야 하는 것처럼 말이다.
그렇기에 당신이 많은 노력을 하고 비록 결과가 만족스럽지 않더라도 실망하고 좌절하지 않았으면 좋겠다. 당신의 노력은 부족하지 않았다. 시기와 운과 사람이 맞지 않았던 것이니까. 그러니 해낼 수 있다는 자기 효능감을 가지고 다음 일에 최선을 다해보자.
이번에는 그 노력이 꽃을 피워내고 노력의 배로 보상받을 수 있을 것이다.
