73. When do we use a past tense?

과거 시제를 언제 써야 하는지 좀 더 구체적으로 알아보자. 과거 시제를 이해하기 위해서는 우선 동사의 개념을 다시 한번 복습한다.

Verb is an action word. Verb can tell the time: present tense- past tense –future tense 동사는 동작을 나타내는 단어다. 동사는 시간을 말해 준다. 현재 시제, 과거 시제, 미래 시제

To make a past tense, add “-ed” or “d” at the end of the verb. 과거 시제를 만들기 위해서는 동사 뒤에 ‘ed’ 나 ‘d’를 붙여 준다. These are regular past verbs Play-played, want-wanted 이들은 규칙 과거 동사이다. 놀다-놀았다, 원하다-원했다. But some verbs change differently. 어떤 동사들은 다르게 변한다. These are irregular past verbs. go-went, come- came, eat- ate 이런 동사들을 불규칙 과거 동사라고 한다. 가다-갔다, 오다- 왔다, 먹다- 먹었다.

We use a past tense to show an action that happened in the past. 우리는 과거에 발생한 동작을 보여 주기 위해 과거 동사를 쓴다.

When there is a past time word in the sentence, we use a past tense. 문장에 과거 시간을 나타내는 단어가 있을 때 과거 동사를 쓴다. Yesterday, two days ago, two weeks ago, last month, last year…. and so on. They are past time words. 예를 들면, 어제, 이틀 전에, 2주 전에, 지난달에, 작년에 등등.... 이것들은 과거 시간 단어들이다.

For example, yesterday, May mopped the kitchen floor.

예를 들면, 어제 May는 주방의 바닥을 닦았다.

과거 시제에 관련된 영어를 이해했다면 다음과 같이 말할 수 있어야 한다.
